Thomas Moran (1837-1926) “Fingal’s Cave, Island of Staffa, Scotland” (1884-1885) Oil on canvas Hudson River School Located in the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia, United States Fingal’s Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited Island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and is known for its natural acoustics. The National Trust for Scotland owns the cave as part of a national nature reserve. The original Gaelic name of the cave is “An Uamh Bhin” (“the melodious cave”), but it was renamed by in 1772 as Fingal’s Cave after the hero of an epic poem by 18th-century poet-historian James Macpherson.
