kindergarten but it’s Newsies(1992)
I rewatched Newsies (1992) and it is now one of my favourite movies, it was genuinely so fun (and I personally think it’s a lot better than the live/broadway production because holy crap were those king of New York lyric changes were god awful. The kid named RACETRACK doesn’t want a permanent box at the sheepshead races for some reason and a livesies les wants his very own bed (which he has already) with an indoor terlit despite it being 1899 and indoor plumbing being established in 1869 but whatever man. )
ANYWAYS rant aside i did these for fun so whether you want to interpret this as them actually being in 1899 or that this is just one of miss lovelet’s plays is up to you.
Monty is 100% Racetrack (1992 race, because that racetrack is the wisecracking realist while livesies race would eat a bath bomb whole and only one of those is Monty lmao). 1 because they would have similar senses of humor, 2 because Racetrack dresses a lot nicer than the other boys which implies that he makes more money and finally because gambling and horse betting lol (this character choice was also 100% influence by @gabirueatssalad’s interpretation of Monty. Specifically in her fic To Tame a Firecracker go read it NOW). Southern Monty is canon to me and also very near and dear to my heart…However imagining him sounding like young Max Casella makes me giggle. I know Crutchy is canonically disabled like Monty but it felt like a disservice to his character to chose crutchy only because they’re both disabled. I also briefly considered Jack who would be my second choice for Monty because they’re both motivated by money, cowboys and also they are kinda similar but Monty’s ass would NAWT give a shit about Santa Fe nor would he sing that. (I can however see him channeling his inner racetrack Higgins and absolutely slay in King of New York).
Carla HAS to be Spot Conlon. He’s the most feared and respected newsie in all of New York (much like Carla being generally respected by her peers, including Cindy of all people), he’s the key the strike (much how Carla is the key to being able to maneuver around kg2 because of her services) and she just has that aura (and also consider carlonty sprace).
I decided to split the role of Spot Conlon between Carla and Davey. Because Spot also has a pretty quick temper and is also called the king of Brooklyn (like how Davey is the King of the Playground). I decided to give Davey Spot’s iconic cane and Carla Spot’s iconic slingshot because it just felt right.
Mr. Huxley is of course Joseph Pulitzer, Regis is Weasel, Principle David could be Bryan Denton and Jerome’s dad and the janitor share the role of Warden Snyder.
Lily I can see as Katherine, and Maybe Billy as either Jack or David (you can’t tell me that he wouldn’t sing Santa Fe in the most dramatic way possible and still eat it up. Plus he WOULD do the goofy dance break and steal a man’s horse. However I just can’t see Billy being a traitor even if it was to save his friends a trip to the refuge. Meanwhile Kidd could also be Jack but Kidd just doesn’t match up well with jack’s motivations so idk let me know what y’all think.
Nugget is crutchy, Jerome is Boots (because he’s the one who goes with jack to Brooklyn to recruit spot and he, Monty and Carla have always been this semi trio in my mind) , Buggs is Kidd Blink, either Emmy or Penny as Sarah Jacobs, the hall monitors are the Delancey brothers and Austin is Mush Meyers. I also did consider making Ozzy davey so that’s still on the table, idk who would be Les and my train of thought is crashing into the wall rn so that’s all for now.
