There are few things governments can get away with more than state-sanctioned oppression of women, especially when the woman haters dress up their intense misogyny in religious rhetoric, no matter how divorced from the original religious texts their laws may be. As long as people can say brutalizing women is part of their “culture”, then suddenly it’s off-limits to criticize, as if women are also not part of a culture, as if it’s not racist to say men from a certain culture can’t help but act barbaric towards women, and as if misogyny is not baked into human culture more broadly.

And nope, I’m never letting it go that this website’s first response to women being concerned about women and girls in Afghanistan post-withdrawal was to yell at women and say it was “white feminism” to think a terrorist group (that literally shot Malala in the face for being a girl trying to go to school!) would be catastrophic for women’s rights. It doesn’t matter how badly men treat women—people will always think that women talking about misogyny is worse
