Cantinflas (Around the World in 80 Days, Ahí está el detalle, Ni Sangre, ni Arena)—OH BOY I GET TO TALK ABOUT CANTINFLAS!! Honestly, I’m not the most qualified to even be talking about him: he was famously a king of wordplay, but Spanish is my second language so I always feel like I’m missing some of the jokes…..but even so he is so SO funny it’s like unbelievable. Ok so also. One movie I can talk confidently about is him in around the world in 80 days, which i have watched so many times and he just rocks. Like. ROCKS. Here he is on his dumb little bike [included below the cut]. This is how we meet him in th movie and I think they should have just put the words “SCRUNGLY” across the scene.He also does little tricks, wears his dumb little shoes, has some kind of weird romantic thing going on with David niven…..it makes me so sad we dont have even more movies from him because honestly his whole thing (esp in 80 days with his silly trousers) is just Gender.
Elsa Lanchester (The Bride of Frankenstein, Witness for the Prosecution, Mary Poppins)—Surely somebody's already submitted Elsa Lanchester for this right? Right??? Because her scrungle levels are OFF THE CHARTS in literally everything. The way she's Katy Nanna straight-up refusing to spend another minute with Jane and Michael Banks because she has DIGNITY thank you very much. The way she's Mary Goddamn Shelley stuck listening to Lord Byron mansplaining literature like "ha ha maybe even YOUR little monster story will be published" and she shoots back "It *WILL* be published, *I* think!!!" in the most bright-as-nails fuck-you-Byron voice imaginable. The way she's a nurse herding her lawyer charge through a sordid love-triangle case and we gradually realize the real love story was between her and the lawyer all along. The way she's a clandestine witch casting hexes on telephones, the way she's a princess's PA and helps an old friend steal an invitation card, the way she's a cleaning lady who goes to Germany to personally assassinate Hitler, the way she's a posh village worthy trying to impress Danny Kaye, the way ERRGHH i could go on just look at her scrungle.

I feel like it's useful context here that the chem/phys teacher, Will Hay, is the only scrungly-old-guy comedian on this list - everyone else is a hot youngish actor, whereas Will built his whole career playing well-meaning middle-aged twits in inept positions of authority. It's exactly as if you had a French class with Timothée Chalamet and a Home Ec class with Jeremy Allen White, and then you went immediately to a Management class with Steve Carell.

This is what a Larix decidua, Pinaceae looks like right now. Being a deciduous conifer, it first goes through some dramatic colour changes and then sheds its needles, which grow back a bright green the following spring.

So this @laurenillustrated artwork and all the vintage-dream-casting at @hotvintagepoll got me thinking: if Scooby Doo were a thing in the 1890s, then a few years later it would be a NATURAL for silent Hollywood. So who do we cast in Hal Roach’s hit 1915-1919 series of Scooby Doo live-action comedy shorts?
Shaggy and Scoob are both easy, because look, here’s Charley Bowers! He always plays chaotic pottering-around-with-machinery types, which is exactly the vibe that 1890s Shaggy gives, and he does so with a surrealist slapstick edge that’s perfect for the material. On top of that, Bowers is a pioneering stop-motion special effects artist—so he can also be our lead animator, and the rapport between live-action Shaggy and his animated Scooby will be delightful.
Like Shaggy, Velma has to have a certain slapstick quality (“Where are my glasses? I can’t see without my glasses”), so it’s lucky we have Alice Howell—nicknamed “the female Charlie Chaplin” by the tiresome people who use that type of comparison. The point is, she can give Velma the bookish self-possession suggested in the 1890s look, AND also run through a gajillion doors in a wacky hallway chase culminating in a spectacular pratfall.
(Mabel Normand is another contender, but her acting style seems a couple notches too naturalistic for Scooby Doo. I definitely see her directing a bunch of the shorts though.)
Fred needs to be both a conventionally hot manly-hero type and a bit of an idiot, so hello Reginald Denny! This British actor emigrated to Hollywood in the early 1910s, became a comedy star, and played himbos so well that he was still playing them into the 1960s. He’s even in the Adam West Batman movie as the naval hero Commodore Schmidlapp, who’s so ditzy he doesn’t realize he’s been kidnapped by the Penguin.
Daphne is a fun one—let’s assume that by this point, Pearl White is tired of all those straight-up action serials like The Perils of Pauline, and wants to do a spoof for a change. With silent comedy shorts there’s always a chance the plot will wander away and leave the individual gags running the store, and White brings enough tension and gravitas to prevent that situation and keep things moving. At the same time, since she favors action roles, she can easily match the dynamism of Bowers, Howell, and Denny.
And that’s to say nothing of all the silent actors who could appear in bit parts on their way to fame. Maybe the gang tears the mask off the ghost, and discovers it’s an early-career Buster Keaton?
Watching Bogie and Bacall in The Big Sleep makes me think that the Hays Code was good, actually, because the two of them sitting in public, fully clothed and not touching each other while they talk about horse racing is hornier than any explicit sex scene ever could be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxaHqBvbzB8)

What's your favorite piece of vintage media that's NOT a movie?
There's these old Sherlock Holmes radio plays I used to binge—I think maybe they were these ones, though I wouldn't have guessed Basil Rathbone's involvement because the show’s defining features were (1) not being very good and (2) segueing into an ad for Clippercraft Shirts every five minutes. The only story I really remember has Moriarty hiding a bomb inside a chicken at the diamond jubilee, which is cleverly foiled by Sherlock Holmes taking the chicken bomb and jumping into a lake with it. People in the 40s really knew how to write a gripping yarn.
Was the chicken a live chicken, or like a roast?
A roast chicken. Moriarty was dressed as a royal footman and did a silly voice so nobody suspected him in the slightest. Truly Arthur Conan Doyle could never.

For instance, I still have no clue what the Eldritch Long-Fingered Creature above is, and I take it I’m supposed to be creeped out by it, but
LOOK at it! Look how the camera bounces in the sunlight and the Creature bops along! Look how its brow relaxes as it bops, how its mouth moves gently toward a smile, how its hands move toward its heart. I recognize all the body language here: the Creature’s having a deeply emotional experience, and I’m here for it.

Again, I get that it’s supposed to be a fearful image of destruction, but the more it loops, the more it becomes clear it’s just a happy little Kong learning how to floss his teeth like a Responsible Adult

Malvolio’s Revolve
The joy of Shakespeare is that even if you see the same play dozens of times, each production is its own, unique experience.
Having said that… there are certain bits of stage business that often crop up in numerous productions. One of my favorites is Malvolio’s revolve.
Just for fun, here are various examples of Malvolio’s revolve that have been captured on film. (If the gifs don’t work, check out my original post here.)
Alec Guinness in the 1970 ITV Saturday Night Theatre production does the classic dubious, self-conscious revolve, although Sir Toby and his gang are safely behind a hedge and don’t have to hide.
Nicholas Pennell in this 1986 filmed production at the Stratford Festival of Canada executes a confident and rarely-seen double revolve, forcing his peanut gallery to duck out of sight.
In this filmed version of the Renaissance Theatre Company’s 1988 production, Richard Briers executes a very slow , dubious revolve that is notable for being counter-clockwise. In my experience, most Malvolios revolve in a clockwise direction.
Finally, this Stratford Festival production milks the revolve for all it’s worth, with Tom Rooney’s Malvolio turning at just the right speed to miss Sir Andrew’s desperate dash across the stage.
Some productions choose to have Malvolio turn the letter around, rather than himself. Others either blow past the line without acknowledging its comedic gag potential, or cut it in its entirety. All are valid choices, but honestly… why look a gift gag in the mouth?

It’s because the play is more frequently performed north of the equator - in the southern hemisphere, the rotation of the earth causes actors in general and Malvolii in particular to prefer revolving counter-clockwise. This is particularly true of actors who have ever portrayed Caius Marcius or Menenius Agrippa, for reasons that are not yet well understood, and as such is commonly known as the Coriolanus Effect.
