Final Test Part 1: Applying bald cap and prosthetics Concept: Bowser Model: Andrew N.
So for my class final I decided to use every technique I’ve learned over the semester (Wig design, beard application, bald cap, airbrushing, and applications). I knew it was going to be a difficult process but I really wanted to test myself.
So I started with applying the bald cap. I had the cap pre measured and cut to fit my model’s head appropriately, and I decided to cover the ears as well to really achieve a full “dragon” look. I glued the cap with spirit gum, then cleaned the excess glue with acetone which also thinned out the edges nicely. I mainly focused on thinning out the edges on the sides since I was going to apply a forehead piece afterwards. Once I finished the cap, I began to pall the forehead piece. Since I was applying it over a latex cap, I couldn’t use acetone on it to thin out the edges. So I used a combination of bondo all around the edges, then evened it out with liquid latex to give it the “skin” texture. There was a small gap under the brow area which needed to be filled in, so I used eyelash glue to hold it down since I didn’t want to use the liquid latex. Once that was done I applied the nose in a similar fashion with bondo, then going over with liquid latex.
Final Test Inspiration and Shell prep Concept: Bowser & Princess Peach
These are some of the inspirational pictures that I used as reference for my Final character looks. I didn’t want them to look exact so I took some artistic freedom and give them my own personal touches. I chose these two characters because I wanted to try using every technique I learned over the semester and it was going to require 2 models.
The shell was very easy to make. I took a large piece of cardboard and soaked in in water so I would be able to shape it into a dome. Once I let it dry, it spray painted it in green and glued party hats which I painted in white to create the spikes. When it came time to put it on my model, I hot glued it directly to the body suit because I didn’t want to have visible straps on it.
Test on Application Part 1: applying the piece and make up Concept: sports injury Model: Carlos H.
This was a simple process. I started out with cleaning the skin with alcohol. Then I fitted and marked the placing for the piece and stuffed the inside with cotton to keep it from sinking in. I then used acetone to thin out the edges and clean off the excess spirit gum I used to glue the piece on. I then followed with bondo to hide and cover the edges a bit more. Once that was done I applied a broken nose with wax and did a simple full face make up. For the piece, I used the Ben Nye bruise wheel and stage make up. The only problem I had was with fully hiding the edges of the pieces. I should’ve cut the latex edges a bit more before I placed it.
Application test Part 2: Final look Concept: Sports injury Model: Carlos H.
This is the full look. Overall, I was happy with how everything turned out. I was also trying to tell how the injury happened with the pictures I took.
Bald Cap Application Test: Part 1 (applying bald cap) Character: Cynthia/Toddler’s Doll
At the very start of the process, I tied my model’ sharing into a French braid so it would tuck into the cap a lot easier. I then used minimal water to slick down any loose hair. After, I cleaned my model’s forehead with alcohol so the spirit gum would have a better hold. Once the bald cap was applied, I cleaned off the excess spirit gum around the edges with acetone, which also thinned out the edges. Once that was done, I applied bondo all around then smoothed it out with a water-soaked sponge. I then used an orange sponge to cover the cap with grease paint as a protective layer for the regular foundation after.
What worked well was the way I spread the bondo to cover the edges. I spread it up towards the edge to really fill in the edge and blend with the skin. What didn’t work was my cleaning with acetone. I should have gone through a second time to really get the edges thinner.

Bald Cap Application Test: Part 2 (Make Up) Character: Cynthia/Toddler’s Doll Model: Mie
So after I covered the head area with grease paint, I applied a simple face primer to smooth out the skin. Afterwards, I did full foundation over the head, to face, down to top of chest area. I then did basic facial contouring to make features pop. I did a strong, oversized lip to make them appear larger and more animated. I then glam’d it up with a purple eyeshadow and glitter to make it more girly. I finished it off with false eyelashes and drawing on the eyebrows just to intensify the look. The extra photos are just to show the dress and hair. I took a basic orange dress and used a feather boa piece to line the neck and bottom, then finished the rest with glittery purple gift wrap(I miscalculated the amount of boa so I improvised haha). For the hair pieces, I used unsteamed crepe hair that I stretched out by hand and fluffed out, then spray painting it yellow to for color and hold its shape.
What I really liked was how the lips turned out. I was really happy with it. I noticed that as I was applying the foundation, some of the edges around the ears were coming apart and I tried to reflux them as best as I could using liquid latex.

Bald Cap Application Test: Part 3 (Finished Look) Character: Cynthia/Toddler's Doll Model: Mie So this is the completed look. I finished the character by gluing the hair pieces to her head with spirit gum and adding the dots to represent Cynthia's hairline. The last two pictures I changed up the make up to make it even more cartooney. The only problems I came across were with the hair pieces. I made them a bit too heavy and so they wouldn't stay on for a while. After that, the larger pieces were flopping down and would stay up. Next time I should include a pipe cleaner to make it stay up and possibly using less crepe hair to make it lighter. Overall though, I'm extremely happy with the finished look and thankful that I had a model willing to put up with the long process. P.S. The clown featured in some of the photos are of the character that my classmate did for the same test. :-) Www.parkidie.tumblr.com
After completely forgetting to do it, here is my beard application test procedure: Part 1
Model- Robert Character- Biker
I first started with a primer on his face. His skin tone was more on the pale side and it was absorbing all the color, so a primer was necessary. After applying the primer I had him wear the sunglasses and I used base and a brush to trace the outside of the glasses to create the tan lines. After, I went with a darker base to give him an all around tanned look. Afterwards, I started aging his eyes using basic highlight and shadow.
Beard application test: Part 2- Applying the beard
This is where the look was starting to come together. The top pictures show the stippling and blending process for the sun burn I was giving him. I feel the placement was executed pretty good, the only came was to the blending. It seemed as though I may have use a bit too much brown and red because the burn color was a little off. When it came to applying the beard I did it in small, separated sections. Since I wanted him to be an older biker, I kept in mind to make his beard a little thin since hair thins out. I used a mix of brown, dark brown, small bits of black and white crepe wool to create the beard. I think the placement was overall well done, I just needed to work on the edges a bit more.
Beard application Test- part 3: Final look
So this is the complete look. For the look, he wore a black t-shirt, faded jeans, biker boots, denim vest, and accessorized with a bandana, wallet chain, sunglasses, leather & chain bracelet, and leather suspenders. Overall, I’m very happy with the complete look. I feel like as if I did a good job in transforming him into this character I created. The only issues I just need to practice a little more are my color values for the sun burn and being a bit quicker in applying the beard.
P.S. Tumblr wouldn't allow more than a certain number of photos on a post, so here are the research photos and inspiration for the wig design.
First project: Wig design Concept: Egyptian Royal- Model: Didi Top Row: process of designing wig. 2nd Row: Make Up process Last: Completed look For the wig, the idea was to create the headpiece out of the hair as opposed to just placing a headpiece over the model's head. I did braiding and wrapping hair with ribbon and beads. To give the full body of the hair, I wrapped the hair in cardboard painted in black. I then used the braided hair which I braided with wire to hold in place. What worked great was the cardboard to give it just enough height like I was hoping for. For the make up, I wanted to experiment and slightly modernize the typical Egyptian look. What worked was the shades of eyeshadow I chose to make her eyes pop and the glitter I added to accent. What didn't work was the shade of lipstick and eyebrows. Lips should've been darker red and eyebrows should've been erased and made higher. Also, no blush and contour cheeks even more to make more dramatic.
Had to make up wrinkles cuz he has 0.0 stress lines…..and I hate him for it :-/
I look exactly like my dad here. It's creepy. @.@
Make-Up Final project: Jigglypuff from Pokemon First- real life research Second- Jigglypuff research Third- schematic Fourth- final product
Special FX First row: Broken nose Attempts were pretty good, only problem I kept having was just matching the base to the skin tone. Second row: black eyes. Colors were decent. Just need to practice the place, net of it a bit more. I went a little too far out on Ulyses' eye. Third row: Burn Left is water and right is fire. These were a lot of fun to do. Colors were pretty good, just got to blend and mix colors a bit more. Fourth row: Facial hair. Wool in left and stipple on right. I made surr that when I added the wool hair, to to it in diagonal downward strokes so that it would stick according to the direction of the natural hair growth.
My old age test. Model was Brenda. I was pretty happy with the overall result. I was especially happy with how the neck turned out. I just gotta work on the forehead wrinkles and make the lip wrinkles go into the lips. Bottom are schematics.
