When I think of this AU the "present day" would be like, early DS9 timeframe I guess? The angst potential of the upcoming Dominian war... delicious.
Moiraine works for intelligence as a secret operative but she is a very reluctant one. Her family connections, eagerness to know things, and skill at subterfuge made her a prime candidate but she only shares things she thinks would benefit the greater good. She shares more with Siuan and Lan than she does with her bosses, and runs rogue operations if she thinks she can't trust anyone else in Starfleet, especially when the Dominion starts invading.
I considered making Moiraine Siuan's first officer but I do like Leane for that. First officer would put Mo in a better position to gather intellegence than science officer but it also doesn't suit her very well. I initially wanted them all to be on the same ship but Siuan being a captain and Moiraine remaining (somewhat) stationary tickled my brain so I imagine Mo and Lan working on a big Starfleet station DS9 style, where Mo could gather intel on all the comings and going and conferences and whatever, and Lan being chief of security of the station.
For Lan/ L'Lan's name,, I'm no expert on Vulcan language so this is what i got from the internet but the prefix L' means bearer (of), and Lan in vulcan means rank. So his name being bearer of rank could literally notttt be more perfect for him. Idk if in this AU it will be L'Lan or L' An or just Lan or like,, Al'Lan idk!! if anyone has like great Vulcan language insights lmk.
Idk it's not fleshed out yet at all!!! Just thoughts and little scenarios bouncing around in my head!!!!
Drawing him I got desensitized to Lan's bangs but omg. It does look so cursed but hey he holds to traditions. Also he wears blue eyeshadow. For uh tradition.
Moiraine - 50% human (father), 50% vulcan (mother)
Joined Starfleet to be a researcher/historian, but was recruite by Starfleet Intellegence straight out of the academy. They had their eye on her from the start.
She resents her human side and has spent most of her life surpressing that side of herself. She was raised by/around emotionally volatile humans (Damodreds) and left home age 13 to study on Vulcan until she was old enough to Join Starfleet Academy.
Mindmelded to Lan. They're best friends, met on Vulcan.
Married to Siuan, met at the academy where they were roommates. Siuan helped her embrace her human side more.
Guilt tripped into becoming an intelligence officer.
Siuan Sanche - Captain/scientist. Human.
Grew up on a small earth colony where Starfleet was not well-regarded, close to the DMZ (demilitarized zone).
Rose through the ranks fast because of her impressive (battle) strategies and ability to puzzle out/solve problems.
Married to Moiraine, who keeps her informed on her intel. Siuan uses her higher rank to help her with missions. As captain she is more informed and can pull strings.
Started as a marine exo-biologist but switched to command after recommendation after taking charge during an awaymission gone wrong.
Her quick thinking makes her lead choice for battling the Borg.
L'Lan - Lieutenant commander, chief of security. Vulcan
Orphaned as a baby, his parents were very renowned philosophers and spiritual masters. They were killed in an attack on their shuttlecraft. L'Lan was raised by his parents' fellow masters in a temple, prepping him to become a master himself.
Met Moiraine at the temple where she came seeking help to control her emotions. After initial conflict they became best friends and eventually mindmelded.
Uncomfortable with the path laid out for him but unsuer what else to do. Mo joining Starfleet made the decision easy for him.
Recommended for command but he wanted nothing to do with it. Working security and helping Mo gave him a purpose.
Now that I have had a bit of time and emotional distance, here are my thoughts on Kaladin in Wind and Truth (I’m very sorry, I just need to get this out of my system and then I’ll shut up about it):
I love Kaladin healing from his past, learning to manage his mental illness, learning the flute (especially love how musicianship takes full advantage of his love of practice and achieving mastery in a way that only fighting with the spear has done previously!!), stumbling through inventing therapy, trying to figure out what he wants from life, and, after it all, realizing the Fifth Ideal with a sort of natural ease.
What I don’t love is the breakneck pace at which these developments progress, combined with jarringly modern self-reflection/awareness and prose that has abandoned any pretense of subtlety, mere days after the events of Rhythm of War, over the course of a single Rosharan week. For context, I loved Rhythm of War. There are very few scenes in fantasy literature that have made me feel as much as the sequence leading up to and including Kaladin’s swearing of the Fourth Ideal. And Kaladin’s journey in Wind and Truth, despite its references to Rhythm of War, feels entirely disconnected from those events that moved me so much, in a way that, to be honest, feels a little cheap. I’ve read a number of attempted Watsonian justifications for why Kaladin’s development moves so quickly, but none of them feel real enough to satisfy me. And for a character whose arc I loved so much in large part because of its emotional realism in the face of fantastical circumstances, the perceived absence of that realism felt very, very wrong.
Honestly, I think that if Kaladin’s Wind and Truth arc had happened more gradually, over the course of a single book that covered a more typical timeframe for a Stormlight novel, I would’ve been clapping and cheering at regular intervals. I like where he ended up, even though it’s a conclusion that hurts (especially when I think about Lirin and Hesina and Oroden oh god). I just wish that the journey to get there had been more satisfying (to me, personally – I know that some people did find it satisfying and that’s great! It just didn’t quite do it for me).
Anyways, now I can move on to having fun envisioning the wacky scenarios that are gonna go down in Not-Braize!

The trauma kids are traumabonding. They’ve come a long way since the boots moment, though they just stopped calling each other names a few hours ago.
I'm slowly inching closer to a Kaladin I’m 100% happy with. I'm at ninety-something, I’d say.
Sometimes a friend group is a 37 year old former assassin who caused a whole bunch of political upheaval by killing a lot of guys, hears the voices of those he killed, and has realized he wants a life of peace, a 800+ year old talking sword who really wants to destroy evil but is beginning to realize he has questions about what that means, a 22 year old former highmarshal who accidentally invented therapy, is learning one song on a flute to try and relax, and trying to find a healthy work- life balance, a 1000+ year old spren who's basically god's daughter and a princess who is also learning how to have a healthy work-life balance with her friend, and a 7000+ year old herald who believes in following the law to the letter, really hates that one song, and does not believe in a healthy work- life balance.
