the difference between “Standing here it’s all so clear/I’m where I’m meant to be” and “If she’s here it’s crystal clear/I’m where I’m meant to go” is so WONDERFUL, especially when you think of the meanings behind “be” and “go”
because Rapunzel has always BEEN is one place. she’s always been in that tower; it’s where she thought she’d be forever, probably, but now that she’s out- now that she’s somewhere New and Safe with Eugene- she realizes that this new place is where she wants to be, this new person is who she wants to be with.
but let’s talk about “go” for a second.
because “go” implies, truthfully, that Eugene has been searching for something. he’s been searching for a destination, or a goal, or a dream, and he finds it with Rapunzel. he says that Rapunzel is his new dream, and yeah, the song explicitly states that he’s realizing where he’s “meant to go”, but it’s just. SO much more meaningful when you take his past into account. the orphanage and the life on the run and the instability he’s dealt with for YEARS, and now that he meets this One Person, he’s like “oh. oh, so THIS is what i’ve been missing out on. THIS is where i want to stay.”
i know all of this is really self-explanatory when you listen to the song, but it’s never hit me that it’s so much more meaningful than “oh, this is where we realize we’re in love with each other”, when it’s really saying:
“oh, this is where we realize that- though our lives are very juxtaposed (trapped but safe vs. free but dangerous)- we have a new common ground of Wanting Better and Seeing Better within each other, which in turn leads to this new romantic feelings and a sense of stability that neither of us have ever had”
