"You get a strange feeling when you’re about to leave a place. Like you’ll not only miss the people you love but you’ll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you’ll never be this way ever again.”
Azar Nafisi (via paradoxicalsentiments)
Europa Park!
Well. I'm back in Canada and I've got some catching up to do! I guess I'll start from where I left off (if I can remember that far back)...
I think this party happened after my first exam....it was between/inside abandoned train carts. It was a really awesome idea and there were lots of people there, lots of beer and food and fun times!
I spent most of this week studying for my last exam and finishing the last season of Friends! That is, except for my birthday. Spent with all of my friends who were still in Stuggi, a night of drinking games and sillyness. Security came twice.....I mean, it was a Monday night....but luckily the security guy is Hungarian and we've got a few of those kickin' around! I love the way my European friends wished me a happy birthday (with a firm handshake and sincere wishes for my year to me, my friends and family....and then followed with one, two or three kisses on the cheeks). One friend of mine, Laurynas drew me this picture!!
He kindly gave me a couple extra digits on my pinky ahaha
Trung inside HdM for THE LAST TIME EVAR! After our last exam we ran around the building to finish handing in papers and tracking down profs, academic coordinators, etc. And had a celebratory beer from the caf, of course. Luckily found one of our profs Thomas so we could make plans to meet with him later to say goodbye.....
Thomas is beside Trung and Stephanie is an also an ex-GCM prof....OH, LIFE.
The rest of the week before unofficially moving out my apartment was spent catching up on sleep, having barbeques, lounging on Simon's rooftop, *making real homemade German food,* visiting Europa park (pictures to follow), chalkin' up sidewalks, saying goodbyes and of course packing up my little cubby of a room. My perfect little exchange life came slowly to an end, eating a lasagna cupcake for breakfast outside of my empty room to the sound of Simon playing his guitar........
MERRRR, then it was off to meet the fam for our Eurotrip!
mid-week zoo trip!
mid-week zoo trip!
This year, I'm going to have a weird birthday and some bittersweet goodbyes
So, it's the big 2-1 for me tomorrow! I can finally go to Vegas like I've always wanted to (well at least since 2009 when The Hangover came out). This brings me to a point of reflection on the year.....And I guess I'm paying slightly greater attention to the past 5 months. I'm certain that I've experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows (thus far) in my life the past 365 days. After spending last summer working full-time, taking summer school, and being at the hospital for all the time in-between, I was feeling pretty beat-up. Then the bleak idea of giving up my apartment and spending the next few months commuting, had my family, friends, and coworkers solely keeping my spirits up (special shout-out to my dad for doing virtually anything he physically could to make the transition to commuting easier). And looking forward to leaving for my adventure, of course. Which leads me to the highs.....
Like how I was telling a friend here about Southside the other day and just talking about it gave me butterflies and goosebumps and the whole bit. Or remembering basically the whole month of May (from leaving Sweden, hanging out with Ian in Stuttgart, experiencing Köln and Düsseldorf with the drupa team, one unfathomable night in München, and then embarking on the great Italian adventure at the end of the month) was like a dream.
Sometimes I just can't believe this is my life. My life here is ridiculous. Last night I was at a party between and in abandoned train carts. Like, WHAT!? Me and my friends are always casually comparing travel stories and I step back and think...is this real life? At times it really is like a fairy tale storybook. Or at least a 3 minute long Taylor Swift song. I've had so many "pinch me" moments. What I'm trying to say is I do a lot of happy dances when I'm alone in my flat, okay!?
I know moving back to Canada is going to feel surreal and hit me like a ton of bricks. I absolutely love my life here but, I mean, I do miss home. I miss my family and the buzz of the city and specific foods and my bed and rooftops and driving and basically every person/thing that I don't have with me here. But knowing that everything is waiting upon my arrival back home makes it so much easier to be away from. I know I'll be back soon. When I almost started to feel homesick it quickly became excitement to go home mixed with the sadness of leaving Germany. I just started to take in that I won't see some of these places as they are now, ever again. This goodbye has a more permanent, indefinite quality to it.
I knew it was going to be bittersweet to say goodbye, but I wasn't prepared for it to be more bitter than sweet. From now on I'm in uncharted territory. I don't know how to say goodbye to a place I call home, without knowing if I'll ever come back.
Before this exchange I thought I would be happy staying in Toronto for the rest of my life. And after all of my travels over the past 5 months, yeah, I have to say that I'm still madly in love with Toronto...but there's so much more world out there. There's no way I'd be content staying stuck in the same city I was born in for my whole life. I never thought I would be suffocated by the thought of staying in Toronto.
Although I wasn't with my family this weekend, not being with them for a (not so) random date in July was definitely worth the past 5 months and the month I still have ahead of me. So cheers to the next 21 years. Life is crazy. Where the fuck will I be next year, let alone 21 more years from now.....
So yeah anyways, tomorrow's my birthday and I feel all weird about it. Birthdays are weird. Goodbyes are weird. Life is weird. And also amazing. That's what makes it interesting, I guess. I hope I always think my life is amazing. Maybe one day I'll even be okay with goodbyes, too.
Today I finished my second-last exam, and handed in my last group paper. My strong hate for group work got much, much stronger and I'm very pleased it's over. One more exam and I'm outtttta here! I've basically been dealing with studying and formatting for the past 48 hours (only taking breaks for eating and personal hygiene...wish I was kidding). Earlier this week (before my whole life was shattered by a prof who didn't tell us he was leaving for vacation and we needed to hand in our paper NOW) I said goodbye to Davy and it was rough, but a good night out in the city and stayed out until the wee hours of the morning. Then woke up and had pancake party to drown my sorrows of missing Davy!
Also went to the zoo this week with Trung and his friend from Vancouver/Toronto/London, Wendy! Pics to come!
Also said goodbye to MISS SANDRA PAPP! Heart. Broken.
Family will be here, with me, in Stuttgart, in 13 days.
Gotta go BBQ with Wendy and Trung now......such a drag ;)
SOUTHSIDE
To save camera/phone battery (the charging stations were cut-throat) I didn't take either with me very often to the actual festival area! So just to recap, everyone who I saw on this best weekend of my exchange/year/lifeeeeeee: FRIDAY: little dragon, florence & the machine, the kooks, MUMFORD AND SONS, bonaparte, justice SATURDAY: switchfoot, spector, twin shadow, bombay bicycle club, die antwoord, boy, the shins, temper trap, steve aoki SUNDAY: ed sheeran, sportfreunde stiller aaaaand last but certainly not least, blink 182
Of course there were more between shows and such. Just have to say that Mumford & Sons changed my life. Best show I've ever seen. I've also been telling people that Friday was the best day BY FAR...but after this recap I'm now thinking that Saturday didn't look so bad either. The Shins were likely my favourite on Saturday. As if I'm talking about all of these bands so casually, ugh! Sunday was a great big ball of ridiculousness that I'll remember forever. The butter tent being the highlight. Oh life, you are too good. Still in awe of this weekend......
I've been waiting on those Southside photos, but they'll likely be done tomorrow or Tuesday.....SO here's a picture from last night on my balcony which was Dylan's last night in Stuttgart:
Whole album is allllll over the facebook, here!
Things that have happened since I last posted......met my first new Torontonian! He was actually Scottish but he goes to U of T, so it counts. Canada day happened! Euro final happened! Saw the new Spiderman in 3D two whole days before it came out in Canada! Had a few more goodbyes, nights in the city, and the last (I think) of the Sommerfests. Besides all that fun stuff, real serious studying is happening all day, everyday. Luckily the weather has been pretty dreary and kept me indoors. Gives me horrible cabin fever but I'm just doing a lot of ~LeaRninG~
Fun little potato I made (nicknamed the Hasselhoff).
Celebrating Canada Day by seeing an english movie, yeah!!!!
Just a bit over two weeks until the famjam arrives! Booked our flights (a Ryanair STEAL) from Barcelona-Rome for a date in the middle of the adventure, therefore we have to work around that for the rest of our travel plans (Stuttgart->Paris->Barcelona->Rome->Vienna). HOLY SHITTERS I'M EXCITED!!!!
And to conclude this post, behold, screenshots from the past couple weeks:

After coming back from Southside (WE SURVIVED!!!!!!) I had one of those 'life-changing' showers, ate some real food and then went straight to one of my practical printing tutorials to come up with a finished project for the class! I haven't picked it up yet and I don't want to give mine away, so I won't post a picture of it (hehehe)! BUT HERE!!! TAKE A LOOK AT THE AWESOME CHAIR I LOOTED!!!! Found this in the wasteland of Southside on our way out of the festival:
And cue the pictures from the Hannas's's's goodbye picnic...Broaddaly McGoaddaly!

Two beautiful ladies
Some more beautiful people!
Three beautiful people sitting in front of a group of less beautiful people....... Another day, another goodbye. They're getting harder and I'm getting worse at them. Blaerrrghh
I got to skype my Grammy on my little sister's graduation day! This day (Tuesday) I was telling a friend (well okay, a friend of a friend, really) about how I was sad I didn't get to be there to see her graduate. She was like, "Yeah, it really sucks not being stuffed into an auditorium listening to a bunch of names get called." RIGHT ON! It was exactly what I needed to hear. Happy for Holly and happy that I didn't have to see a bunch of people I'd probably rather not see. Happy, happy, happy!
Just less than a month until my three most favourite people on this planet are in my arms! I feel like I might burst with excitement and anticipation for that moment. I could really do without what comes at the end of those two weeks, however. I'm trying very consciously to let go of the dread I have for my last night here. Not sure how ready for it I am.
ON THAT NOTE, look at what my university looked like last night during the Germany/Italy semi-final... Alls of dese guys were lookin at dis...A screen that by law, can't be wider than 3m, or they have to pay for the rights to hold public viewing....silly Germans! However, I finally got to see the magical white wall be used for something other than just being a part of the building.
Literally the other side of the wall that has a medium-sized TV mounted to it. Unfortunate loss, unexpected, but honestly I forgot the match even happened when I woke up this morning. Love you guys
