There’s just so much to say about ep6. I appreciate it more every time I watch it. I mean, come on with this imagery:

This shot is just stunning. It’s so intimate and yet so indirect. With the candlelight and the little vignettes of the reflections, it’s so much more magical than this straight-on shot (although it is of course also very touching):

And it’s so significant how, when Ed says he’s not a good person and that’s why he doesn’t have any friends, Stede doesn’t protest and say, “yes, you are a good person!” He responds to the second part only: “Hey. I’m your friend.” And Stede also tries to comfort Ed by saying he’s seen him maim people. Bottom line, Ed doesn’t need to be good. More to the point, Stede doesn’t need him to be good. I often think back to this tweet I saw when I was still lurking in the fandom:

I mean, seriously. Goodness and morality in general are rather beside the point altogether. Ed and Stede just connect, and then we hear a bit of a harpsichord version of the Gnossienne No. 5…

BUT THEN, almost immediately after this breakthrough moment, Ed’s ready to let Izzy kill Stede! He clearly doesn’t expect any other outcome from their duel and just looks away. He can’t bear to watch, but he’s willing to let it happen.

I’m as big a fan as the next person of Ed’s grand gesture of giving up his entire life as he knows it via the Act of Grace, but it feels like people often focus primarily on that sacrifice and the devastation Stede causes by ghosting him. Which, yeah! that’s obviously huge! But it was not that long ago when Ed was willing to let his first mate take Stede out!!

I love that their route to (and away) from each other is complicated. I love that they are two objectively problematic dudes who are perfect for one another. I feel like I end every ofmd post this way lately, but I truly can’t wait to see where they go from here.

For all its kinks (heh) Rhea’s and Dom Dom”s relationship has been low key kinda hot and cute. They’ve got mad chemistry for a couple that’s not all over each other. And when they do touch, sheesh.
