“he tried to STEAL MY BAG,” she answers as though it’s obvious. claire will not allow herself to be walked over. she hadn’t before. she wouldn’t now. “what was i meant to do, just let him take it? no, i kicked his ass.”
looks at my dash for the first time in months: yikes
i’m stupidly tempted to revive claire & my trish walker
“I’m not holding my breath, honestly. Although, if anyone can find a decent guy in this city, it’s probably you.” Jessica quirked an eyebrow at Claire. “I mean, that’s gotta be goddamn super power, right? And you attract the superpowered freaks of the world like a magnet.” Herself included, honestly. That must have been some superpower in and of itself, too. Attracting superpowered freaks, having the patience to put up with their shit. “I’ll keep the moving thing in mind when I get bored of this whole PI thing. Better than going back to being a goddamn paper monkey in an office somewhere.” She mock shuddered at the thought and then glanced down to make sure she hadn’t screwed Claire up with those stitches. “Shit. I owe you a beer after this. Or twelve.”
“Don’t get your hopes up too high for me, because I can’t see it happening in the near future,” Claire answers easily. “I’ve tried, I’ve failed. I barely have time for myself, let alone trying to connect with anyone else,” nor does she really have the energy anymore. That’s not something Claire feels the need to mention. “Maybe that’ll change, being fired and everything.” Until she finds a new job, at least. A laugh escapes her again, the threat of a grin on her face. “I definitely wouldn’t consider that to be a superpower – if it were, I’d be asking for a new one,” That’s for sure. She keeps finding them and she damn well gets sucked into it… every single time. Jessica’s not the worse she’s come across, far from it. “I couldn’t handle that either. I prefer being on my feet, moving around,” She prefers helping. There’s a pause at the movement, but it doesn’t take that much longer before Claire is finishing up, wiping the stitches clean. “I will never turn down a beer… Don’t think I have it within me for twelve, but I can give it a good shot.”
her own cheeks flush with embarrassment at reading the situation so wrong. still, there’s something about the way claire talks about him, that makes the redhead wonder. ‘ oh! sorry, my radar is apparently off. but yeah, that sounds familiar. ’
she can only smile, head shaking to herself with a vague look of amusement. “it’s fine,” she means that too. claire had allowed herself to fall into that trap once too. “it almost happened, once, but… he gets himself into too many risky situations for me to carry the stress of.” that’s the easiest way to phrase it.
“Hey, I work in the same crazy ER you do. But I’m running low on hands since I had to kick all of my interns out to study for their exams. Also, my interns are useless. Come on, I’ll do whatever it takes to bribe whoever does your schedule into giving you extra time off to make up for this.”
“The only difference is that you get the deal with the calm, nice patients and I have to deal with the drug dealers and people that are about to be carted off to jail once I’ve finished patching them up,” Eyebrows raise at the other, daring her to argue with the words. “…I hope for your sake that you stick to that, or I’m never doing you another favour for as long as I live.”
“ER is short-staffed again. I’m on-call and I was asked to see who else is available… you happen to be on my way. Don’t close your door and you’ll be doing me a favour, Claire.”
“I know you’re not, but I hope that you’re kidding. I— Do you know how long it’s been since I managed to get an entire day off down there? Too long.”
❝I promise to make it worth your while if you just hear me out.❞
“Sure. Start talking then, I’d like to get on with my evening.”
Who was there that day? Who killed my family?
doctcrisms:
“I’d say I’m sorry but if I was really sorry then we probably wouldn’t be talking right now.”
“Yeah, I gathered that. Is there something you want, or can I close my door again?”
rcscue:
‘ me, too, ’ she admits, thinking of all the times she’d had to put tony back together again after a mission. ‘ so, sounds like you’ve got someone, too. how long has it been? ’
there’s a pause at the question, gaze diverting towards the floor as she ignores the awkward feeling that rises within her. “uh—” a pause, a frown. “we’re not actually together. no, he’s even more dedicated to his work than i am… as hard as that is to believe.”
devillism:
“Hi to you too– I just came here to talk. I promise..”
“I have a hard time believing that… but you can come in.”
“you’re interrupting my ONLY night off this week, you know.”
as claire steps up to the table, karen leans against the wall – sipping on her drink. she has thrown about half of it back since they stepped over to the table & started their GAME. if this were a night with the boys she might be three in by now ———— karen stops herself, she needs to stop thinking about those TIMES. she wants to focus on the things which make her happy ( & the prospect of making a new FRIEND in this lonely city. ) ❝ why did you leave your old job? —— if you don’t mind me asking, ❞ karen asks as she approaches the table with her stick in hand. she lines up with the ball before splitting two others, sending them in opposite directions.
there’s a CLEAR pause at the question and claire can’t stop the FROWN that tips down her mouth. she hasn’t spoken about it much… with anyone. she can’t quite decide if NOW is really the right time, with someone she doesn’t even properly know. maybe she’ll blame it on the ALCOHOL if she comes to regret it, but claire shrugs, diverts her gaze towards the table, the movements karen is making. “it was… they cared about MONEY MORE than they cared about their people,” which sounds like MANY corporations, admittedly. “ther was… an INCIDENT and it became easier for them to IGNORE it in favour of the money they were paid to do so.” a sigh escapes her and she waits for karen to step back before she’s mimicking her actions; leans over the table and lining up before jabbing her cue forward.
youll-know-her-name:
“I’m pretty sure there are exactly zero people without baggage in this city. It’s great for business really.” Jessica rolled her eyes, though her amusement didn’t fade. If Claire wanted to hold out for something special, who was Jess to kill that dream? “If you do manage to find that mystical beast, bring him buy. I’ll bake you guys a cake.” She ran a hand through her hair, and then tilted her head slightly. It unnerved her when people said nice thinks about what she did. Especially when it was someone like Claire who actually did good things. “I’d appreciate it if the cops could do their goddamn jobs. But until then… what else is a girl going to do with super strength? I don’t have the motivation to start a moving company or some shit.”
“I’m not surprised,” Claire muses, a smile curling up the corner of her mouth. She can’t stop the amusement that passes over her features, makes sure to focus her attention back on the wound on Jessica’s leg quickly afterwards. Now isn’t the time to allow herself to be distracted, fingers working quickly and carefully. “If I do, I’ll hold you to that… but don’t expect it to happen any time soon,” Claire would offer the same, but she’s not exactly a great cook. Doesn’t have the room to do so either; that much is apparent by the size of her place, let alone the size of her kitchen. “I think a lot of people would appreciate that… but it’s too corrupt,” It always has been. They don’t call it Hell for the sake of it. A laugh escapes her before she can think to stop it, the grin on Claire’s face widening. “Jones’ Handy Movies. It has a ring to it, y’know.”
