He had been on a real live CCG patrol, just like a real CCG agent, walking the streets of Hive City with his superior officer, on the look out for dangerous ghouls (et. al.) like a real civil servant. How thrilling.Â
âLetâs split up. You take the left side of the neighborhood, and Iâll take the right. Weâll meet up again near the entrance to the next area.â Wonderful. Of course, Amon-senpai. Like something out of a police procedural.
So he wandered around, which was more or less what he was supposed to do, walking only something vaguely resembling a systematic path through the area. Life here wasnât exactly pleasant, and it was somewhat boring, but it was always fun to be allowed out to play this role.Â
Amon was much more obviously A Man On A Mission, and it was always thrilling to see how people reacted to someone like that in their midst. How the subconscious understandings of roles and responsibility took over before people had time to think about what they were doing. Society was a wonderfully, dreadfully efficient machine like that.
But on his own, it was easy enough to mostly melt into the throng, especially in a place like this. Hive City, unlike Tokyo, was not conditioned to admire its ghoul investigators, but enough of them came from a place with something similar enough, even if it was just the generic police, that there was a residual⊠something, when they realized what role he was playing.
Of course, it meant he had to act appropriately when he heard shouting. It was his job to be responsible now, wasnât it. Even a human would have been able to hear that. It wasnât coming from his half of the area, but, well, Amon would want him to go check it out. And besides, he was curious.
By the time he got to the source of the commotion there was quite the crowd built up. It took some time to make his way through, until half way when he heard what was unmistakably Amonâs voice.
Furuta had, of course, heard the man scream like that before, but only because heâd stopped by to check in on Kanouâs little experiments. Certainly wasnât the sort of sound one expected the upstanding First Class investigator to make.
He was never the best at this part - or rather, this particular mask of his was never really the one making this move, but ah well. A first time for everything.Â
âClear the way! CCG!â Even if they didnât know what was going on, or what the âCCGâ was, it seemed heâd managed to convey the urgency and authority needed to trigger that conditioned response. The crowd parted. He was pretty sure the quinque sword didnât hurt matters.
What he saw when he made it to the front was quite a sight to behold. But he was in a role, and that role here was to be shocked. Almost frozen.
âP-please stay back!â he called to the crowd, cautiously moving towards where his superior sat collapsed on the ground.
âFirst Class Amon!â He said, still giving the man a good berth. When Amon failed to respond, lost in whatever fit had gripped him, Furuta came to the annoying realization that he really was the only other CCG officer around and heâd have to play this role all the way. And with all these people watching. Oh well, he was a talented actor.
âIâll⊠Iâll call for medical.âÂ
He could call Arima directly. That certainly would have been interesting, but there was something familiar about the smell in the air. He wasnât so sure he wanted this in the Reapers hands just yet.
So dispatch it was. âThis is Rank One Furuta. Requesting backup and medical assistance for First Class Amon.â Oh, now he also sounded like he was in a police procedural, didnât he.
What would the good subordinate do now, though, he wondered. There was a clear trail of blood leading away. Kijima would have wanted the ghoul followed, and this was a mask made for Kijima, after all
âIâm heading after the suspect.â He said, before rattling off his approximate location and running off.
Running at least until he was past the eyes of the crowd. The blood trail was faint now, but the smell was plenty to go by. And yes, he hadnât been wrong before, this was most certainly a familiar smell.
Making sure he wasnât being followed, he sighed, relieved to be free of that role for the time being.
The man certainly liked to watch, so he was probably around here somewhere still. Especially if Amon was involved.
Someone as inept as Rank One Furuta wasnât really expected to catch a ghoul that could slip away from the Great Amon Koutarou, anyway.
âIf Iâve run into you at a bad time, I can always leave my card, Mr. Crown.â
