“I’m actually quite good at reading you know. For example, I read this name plate on your desk.”

Shinra said as he picked it up and played with it for a moment. However, as his hands were clutzy at all other times except surgery, he dropped it on the floor and forgot about it. It’s not like Shinra wanted to talk though, so much as he wanted to talk at someone and Takatsuki just happened to be his most recent victim. 

“Hmmm but before this I read your books. I got a really distinct impression when reading them, your words carry emotion well. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so in total your books must have amounted to a few hundred pictures at least.” 

As he rambled around he also moved about. He dramatically gestured and started to walk around inspecting the room with no invitation. He went immediately to the books on her shelf and started to play with them.

Just as he slid one out he turned to face her, the glare from his glasses partially obscuring one of his eyes. 

“For instance the impression I got from reading one of your books was, why does this woman make my skin crawl so much?”

Eto watched her name plate fall to the ground, and idly wondered how it hadn’t yet broken given how many people had come into her office and touched her things.

She rested her chin on tented hands as she watched Shinra continued to talk-- she knew where this was going, far too used to having to listen to the rambles of others. Maybe, just maybe, this one would be interesting. Or, maybe, she was being foolishly hopeful-- either were possible, she supposed.

Watching him move about, she wondered just what sort of dramatics this man was used to. He fluttered around with such ease, he must have had a lot of practice.

Even at the mention of her books, Eto’s expression hardly changed. She was observing him, noting fully well that he was observing her, too.

“You’ve read my books, so you ought to know that I write tragedies, horror, and the like.”

She smiled, ever so slightly.

“If my works unsettled you, then they achieved their goal.”

“Eto-cchi, what a cruel thing to say to me.”

Dazai said, even though he was obviously smiling at her ire. 

He did not even bother to pick up the story as he had finished it hours ago. He simply went and paid attention to the next shiny thing that crossed his path, Eto’s obvious bad mood. He hovered over her for a moment, like a vulture circling a corpse. 

Then, he grabbed her by each wrist and pulled her sitting up again, moving her body around like a puppeteer. 

“Do you really have the right to be mad when you would have done the exact same thing in this situation? Your tiny little hands always find my drafts when I try writing something.”

He waved those tiny hands around to let her know what he was talking about. 

“The truth is cruel,” she mumbled.

Her frown only increased as he touched her, and by now she was sporting quite the mean scowl. Dazai was sure to be familiar with such an expression of her’s.

“At least I ask,” she huffed. Of course, that was only a half-truth, as Eto would often only ask to see his drafts after they were already in her tiny hands.

Eto lurched forward, ensuring that their foreheads collided. Though, with Dazai’s skin touching her own, her attack was not as powerful as she would have liked. Instead of a counter, it came off as another, childish retaliation.

"I told you to wait for a reason,” she hissed.

“What a fantastic paragraph! I am truly fascinated with how easily you can build such metaphor.” Showing her very rude and forward approach, Kyoko disregarded the personal space of the green-haired woman like it was nothing. It could be helped, simply the amnesiac opted to ignore that a regular person should not peak onto an artist’s works in such a way. “You are a published writer, right? Don’t worry, I will forget it later so I decided to praise it while I have the opportunity.”

Eto blinked-- her first assumption was that this woman was a fan, but her words proved peculiar. Certainly peculiar enough to catch her interest.

“Oh? Why, thank you. Yes, I am an author. My name is Takatsuki Sen.”

“You say you’ll forget it later? Might I ask why?”

Eto leaned forward, pushing the book of her own towards the other woman.

“I hope you don’t mind me asking for your name as well.”

she’s really done a number on them, hasn’t she? news that the CCG has taken custody of her for being a ghoul has spread. people are making their varied opinions known to the CCG… the ratio of those that support her to those that call for greater punishment is about fifty-fifty.

“Ahhh, sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean it in a mean way.” 

Shinra said almost immediately. The strange part though was that seemed genuine. Shinra made observations without any particular judgement attached to them, and had a habit of just running his mouth and speaking them out loud. His carelessness showed in the way he did not even bother to dodge the pencils that rained down. Not that he was stronger than them, no, they very easily pierced his skin, but he kept talking even while a line of blood ran down his face. 

Like he did not even notice. He was just a person who really enjoyed talking. “Well, if Battler’s gone at least I can meet you. I hope you don’t mind if I use you as his replacement. The name’s Shinra Kishitani-Des!” As he said this he posed with two fingers over his glasses, having to close one eye because the blood ran in a line over it, and then down his cheek. 

“Introductions, introductions, well I’m a doctor but I don’t just limit myself to discussions of science. I also like the paranormal, myths and legends. I like books as well. I like video games sometimes too. I really like Ruri Hijiribe. I think I like a lot of things.”

His speech did a weird thing just then, each time he referred to himself he switched the personal pronoun he used, from boku, to watashi, to watakushi, to ore, almost as if he were cycling through them. 

“Anyway, it’s nice to meet you, miss, huh? Do you want me to notice something?” Shinra had been oblivious to a lot of things, and genuinely too. The nameplate on her door, the office number, the fact that he was currently bleeding. However the moment she gave the slightest unconscious indication with her body, he read her easily, and anounced that fact like he considered it a part of the conversation. 

He followed her eyes to the nameplate on her desk. Then Shinra did an odd thing, he clapped his hands together and showed her a smile that seemed to invite others in. “Oooooh, Takatuski Sen. I would really be honored to have a conversation with you.”

Eto watched blood trickle down the man’s face, and wondered if he noticed the pain he must’ve been feeling. Or, maybe he didn’t feel the pain at all. Either way, the author didn’t have to take note of the man before her for very long to realize something about him.

That is, that this man was a weirdo.

Clearly, she must have a penchant for running into and attracting these sorts of people, or maybe this city was just full of them. She couldn’t tell, for even someone like herself couldn’t judge every person in this city. She could only make observations from what she saw. And, what she saw was undeniably, undoubtedly, a genuinely weird man.

Though, who was she to talk?

Eto leaned back into her chair, content to let the man ramble, until he finally noticed what she’d gestured to. She didn’t understand much of what he said, outside of his name and some of his interests. Who the hell was Ruri Hijiribe? Ah, yes, he’s definitely a weirdo...

“That’s my name, I’m glad you’ve noticed it.”

“So, you’re Kishitani Shinra... sorry, I haven’t heard of you from Battler-kun.”

She rested her palms on the table, coming to sit up now that this man seemed to be intent on (possibly) having an actual conversation.

“Though, you seem to have heard of me, I assume? Might I ask where you heard my name?”

There were plenty of places he could have heard it, if not from any book store in this city that promoted her works, or from Ushiromiya Battler himself. She was merely curious, that was it.

          It had been perhaps three or so hours since she had begun the novel ( though, there was no accurate way to tell beyond her mobile which had remained unopened since she had sat down ), and already Kyouka was nearing its end. The book itself was rather interesting and covered themes that the girl had not considered - and in a way, she connected with it. The Black Goat’s son had become much like his mother in his desires to commit brutalities, and while Kyouka herself lacked any real desire to harm others, she too had inherited her mother’s position in the underworld as a killer ( even if it had not been by choice ). All in all, she was quite certain she had enjoyed the tale, even if it was not her usual cup of tea. 

          But of course, given her focus on the book itself, she hadn’t noticed that author herself had arrived at the store. Not that one could blame her - it wasn’t as if she had expected her to approach. ❝ … This is the first time I’ve read one of your books… but I did enjoy this one. ” There was no need, in her mind, to overly flatter the author and lie about her genuine feelings. Kyouka was not one for stifling what she thought. Still, she hadn’t expected the author of such a morbid tale to look and act as the woman before her did. From appearances, she seemed rather young. ❝ I think I’d like to read more, then I might be able to call myself a fan. ❞ It wasn’t as if she was lacking in spare time. 

          ❝ - and, I suppose it depends on the person. I can’t speak for others but when it comes to books, I don’t particularly like childish stories. ❞

Oh, so that was it, hm? The author continued to smile, and even went so far as to clap her hands in glee.

“I see, I’m still quite honored to hear that you liked a novel of mine.” She leaned in, ever so slightly, curious to learn more about this young girl before her. “Ah, The Black Goat’s Egg... that was particularly enjoyable to write, if I’m being honest with you.”

Though the event was not completely over, the author supposed it might have well have been. Only a few of her fans still mulled about the store, though their eyes were not solely focused on her like they had been earlier. So, Eto had no reason not to take the seat next to the young girl, pleased about the opportunity afforded to her now.

“I can accept that, it’s only fair.”

She continued to observe the girl, taking in her features and attire, wondering what happened to bring her in to this particular bookstore today.

“No, no, you don’t seem the type to like those sorts of stories, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.” Her smile widened. “Are you an avid reader? That’s a trait I like to see in others. You know, this store happens to carry a few copies of each of my novels, so if you’re wanting to read more, feel free to take what you please-- my treat, of course.”

Dazai passively waited until Eto fell asleep. It took no less than 15 minutes, but it was perhaps the most patience he had ever shown in his lifetime. The moment she was asleep however, he simply picked her up and then dropped her.

“Goodbye.”

The fact that she did not wake up from that, confirmed to him that he could do whatever he wanted now. The real gremlin hours had begun. 

Leaving Eto behind, he snuck upstairs on feet with practiced quiet. Then, with no regard at all tore her entire room apart more than it had already been before, looking for the notebook. 

In the morning, he sat on the mess that was her bed, kicking his feet back and very leisurely reading through it. 

Eto awoke, several hours into the morning, groggy and disoriented. Her head throbbed, and she tasted something bitter within her mouth. It took her nearly twice the amount of time it ought to have in order for her to make it up the stairs, and she grumbled all the while.

When she finally arrived to her bedroom, Eto glared at the sight before her.

“Asshole.”

She made her way to her own bed, nearly tripping over the mess Dazai had made in the process, and clambered towards the man. Childishly, like an angry cat, she smacked the notebook out of his hand. Though it only fell to his lap, she still did so out of spite, simply because she could.

Eto then let her body rest upon her bed, and grumbled about how much more comfortable it was than the floor.

“Everything must end, that’s the most comforting fact for us all don’t you think? Being born again just prolongs your suffering, you’ll only live on to hurt more people.” 

Arima stood over her for a moment even bending to get uncomfortably close. 

He picked up the copy of her book he had been holding and placed it in front of her. He opened the front cover and revealed a blank space, and then a moment later fetched a pen from the front pocket of his suit. 

“Would you sign your book for me? That’s what I wanted to ask you for. Sign it to your dear lost one.” Arima leaned back and pushed up his glasses again. “I really envy them, the characters in your books. None of the major named ones ever make it to the end.”

“Ufu, maybe I’d be reborn in a life where things are peaceful.” Eto shrugged. “I doubt it, though, but who could tell?”

She smirked, once again not even bothering to pretend to flinch at Arima’s sudden closeness. She wondered, could he see her more clearly at this proximity, or was she just a fuzzy, green mass?

“Hmm.”

“No.”

Eto turned, moving away from him with ease.

“Envy, hm? I didn’t think you were capable of feeling anything at all.”

Her words, and the blurry image of her back, were all that Eto left Arima with before she left the library completely.

          ❝ ‘Meet Takatsuki Sen’, huh. ❞

          Bookstores had become a frequent haunt of Kyouka’s since arriving in the city. Stores like these were safe, lacked any potential threats ( something she couldn’t rush into any longer given her restricted ability ) and perhaps more importantly, held many distractions - books. Her young age was to her advantage in a bookstore as the owners were less likely to kick her out for ‘loitering’, so Kyouka could spend as much time as she wanted in the children’s seating area reading whatever books she came across that caught her attention. Sometimes they were from the ‘horror’ section, other times from ‘biographies’ - but it seemed that today was a rather important occasion in her preferred store. A well regarded author was to arrive in a few hours. 

          For a moment she wondered if she should leave before this ‘Takatsuki’ arrived as it didn’t sound too pleasant to be caught up in any sort of crowd that would appear to meet them - but before that - ❝ ‘The Black Goat’s Egg’ by Takatsuki, ❞ there were other works by the same author but that particular title stood out to Kyouka, so she delicately pulled the book from the shelf and moved back towards the seating area. It didn’t seem like it was a ghost story but still, there was something about it that made the girl curious. ❝ I guess… I could try it. ❞

To no one’s surprise, the author was running late. What excuse was it this time, her fans wondered? Thankfully, most of the small crowd that did come to the book store seemed used to the fact, and were content in waiting.

When she did arrive, the author went through the usual casualties of meeting and greeting the fans, signing books, and chatting as she pleased. In doing so, Takatsuki Sen took note of those within the book store. Between her fans and the store’s staff, she found folks that seemed to fit in quite well between the shelves -- that was, until she noticed a particularly young girl, reading one of her novels.

How curious, she thought.

Side stepping the person she had just been talking to, the author decided to indulge her own curiosity and walk right up to the girl, smiling politely as she did so.

“Hello there.”

“Are you a fine of mine? I’m flattered-- I didn’t know someone so young enjoyed my works.”

“But I want it.”

Dazai crooned back at her, as he was suddenly dragged back by his waist. He did not seem to mind at all that his life was in moral peril. In fact as he spoke, he wiggled his hips back and forth completely carefree like his usual mannerisms. 

Eto’s entire face had disappeared behind shadow, and Dazai knew he could simply sit still and wait it out and Eto would likely just fall asleep leaving him free to wander around. However, patience had never been his virtue. 

He pointed to his own neck, wrapping his hands around it. 

“If you want to stop me you’ll have to kill me.”

Eto loomed over Dazai, a cold gaze projected within her mismatched eyes.

“Oh... is that all...?”

Her kagune released him, only to grow larger and more hideous around her petite frame. Her hand reached closer, dangerously so, until...

Eto wobbled, as did her kagune, as she fell over onto Dazai into an immediate, intoxicated slumber.

Completely asleep, the author snored.

“Yes. To avoid endings is to prolong the inevitable. Everything must end.”

Arima mused for a moment, turning his face away from the whole world. He wondered what he was getting at. No matter how much he antagonized her, the owl would not kill him because she was not strong enough, and Haise was still not ready. 

Perhaps he was just impatient, because this city had stolen away the peace he thought he finally could have. 

“Only things like dragons and phoenixes live forever you know. Dragons are immortal and phoenixes die and are reborn. It’s too bad I’m neither one of those. Which one would you rather be?”

The moment Arima turned his face, Eto moved. She stood upright once again, still smirking as she took one step forward, then another.

“Everything must end, yes, it’s simply a matter of how.”

She chuckled, easily side stepping the Reaper due to their difference in size.

“A dragon or a phoenix, hm? Ehe...”

“I suppose I’d rather be a phoenix, if I really had to choose. It would be the best of both worlds, to enjoy death and life over and over.”

Eto tilted her head upwards, meeting Arima’s eye.

“It would certainly lead to interesting results, don’t you think?”

Just a few notes of things we’ve edited in the Migration post due to concerns brought to us!

Regarding the Metaverse:

Characters can enter the Metaverse even if they haven’t died, as long as they’ve at least had a near death experience.

We hope this takes the pressure off of feeling like you have to kill your character!

Regarding Palaces:

Character’s can now enter palaces either with a persona user, or with a character ranked Guardian or higher

We hope this lessons the burden on the Persona cast and gives more incentive to reach Guardian rank!

“Ah, we’ll I’m the same.”

In more ways than either of them could possibly imagine. He reached up and readjusted his glasses, the first of any kind of facial movement he had made the entire conversation. When he looked back at her both his eyes and his expression remained blank. 

“I get confused for an old man all the time. I find it difficult to correct them though, for some reason.” 

He continued to look down at her.  He wondered how far the differences in her performance went. Was Eto watching him in the stands, while a lady named Takatsuki performed on stage. Was she laughing in some hollowed out theatre in her mind at this scene?

“Here’s my criticism then. Long running series become dead after a while. It’s best to end things quickly before they rot from the inside out.”

“It’s because of your white hair,” Eto stated, surprisingly bluntly. “... And, because you act like one, obviously.”

Though, who was she to talk?

She shrugged, still smirking, as she leaned against the book case behind her. If Arima was going to stand over her like this, she supposed she might as well make herself comfortable.

Eto chuckled.

“I suppose I have to agree with you on that. There are few things as disappointing as series that don’t end when they ought to. It often leads to subpar endings.”

“I always warn you not to drink so much when you’re so tiny, where’s all the alcohol even supposed to go.” 

Dazai carried her home on his back. If one did not know the truth of this scene it would almost look heartwarming, like a man kindly carrying a sleeping child comfortably on his back. However, Dazai never did anything out of kindness. 

He set her down on the couch, and pulled off his own jacket placing it over her as a blanket. Then, after a moment of petting her hair softly, he immediately grabbed a pillow and shoved it over her head to block her from seeing where she was going.

“Bye, bye!” 

He said running up the steps to find where she had hid the notebook. 

How long had they been out, hopping between bars that Dazai wasn’t banned from and those that would serve her? Eto had no idea, not anymore. She could only mumble a retort to Dazai as she rested her cheek against his shoulder. Whatever she said was lost to his coat. Speaking of coats, where had her’s gone...?

Ah, well, whatever, she thought.

She almost fell asleep, almost, until she felt a pillow on her face. Her body moved before her mind did; her eye snapping as it shifted colors, her kagune suddenly bursting from her back and side. It took only a second for its ugly tendrils to snatch Dazai around the waist and pull him backwards. 

Eto’s small, intoxicated body was slower to follow, even as her kagune brought Dazai towards her.

“You can’t have it,” she mumbled, clearly ready to nod off at any moment now. “It’s not time yet, Osamu...”
