My role in our team - reflection based on Belbin’s Team Role Model
I have participated in numerous teamwork’s during my time in school. Some of the teams reached their full potential where every member had some role, but some teams unfortunately have also fallen short. From my experience, when a team is working at its full capacity every team member has assumed a clear role and responsibility area. I am going to be referencing The Belbin Team Inventory behavioural test in this reflective text.
Belbin’s Team Roles
Belbin has come up with nine different team roles which are divided to three groups:
1. Action oriented roles: shaper, implementer, completer finisher
2. People oriented roles: coordinator, team worker, resource investigator
3. Thought oriented roles: plant, monitor-evaluator, specialist
My role
From these roles, the ones that I link myself with the best are team worker and coordinator. When the InnoChallenge began, I immediately started conversing and building a connection with the exchange students in the group along with the shyer Finnish student. I at first started with small talk so we all could get to know each other better, to build trust within the team. I also usually, not always but most of the times, lead the direction of the conversation or task at hand. Usually by encouraging cooperation I assume the role of coordinator but that is never the goal for me, it just comes out naturally to me because I am excellent listener, good-natured and calm.
For the weekly assignments, the most important factor was that everyone in the group participates equally. Most of the work we managed to squeeze in during the Tuesday class but we met on our free time too occasionally if it was required. The interview and the first week’s tools were one of these occasions. In the end we did not structure our team according to any tool or model that much because we noticed that our team performed quite efficiently with this level of coordination.
I feel like maybe in the future I could try to make use of Belbin’s Team Role -tool on the larger projects since it would fit my existing team role quite nicely even though I am little skeptical if this the right way to achieving better team performance. In the end I identify myself being the person in the group who connects everyone in the beginning and encourages everyone do to their best throughout the project by scheduling and keeping up the atmosphere just to name a few methods.
