Happy Saturday! “Ada” 2018 On display @chicagobotanic until Oct. 28th. This beautiful orchid was truly a Big Bloom from @zezeflowers 💗 before I even photographed it! #bigbloomsorchids #paullangebigblooms . . This Big Blooms Orchid honors Ada Lovelace, (1815-1852) an English mathematician, known as the world’s first computer programmer for her work on Charles Babbage's design for the Analytical Engine. Her notes include the first coded algorithm for the calculation of Bernoulli numbers that would program the the machine. Another peek from my new series “Big Blooms: Orchids.” I’m so excited to be presenting this new body of work created in collaboration with @chicagobotanic with extraordinarily generous donations of orchids from them, and from dear Peggy and Zeze @zezeflowers and @croft_ogawa. . Rosalind, 2018. This orchid is named after Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958,) an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer, best known for her X-ray photographs of crystallized DNA, taken in the early 1950s, that proved the molecule was a helix. The "Jocelyn," 2017 A rose is a rose is a rose... except when it's a Big Bloom named in honor of an exceptional woman. This beauty is named for the astrophysicist,Jocelyn Bell- Burnell, who discovered pulsars- little rotating neutron stars that emit radiation.
