Deal With the Head and Its Ways (beginning)
[I already have my first-ish draft written out, but I thought I'd put a little snippet on here. :D Context can be found in this post. Also, I'm typing this on my phone, so the paragraph layout may be a little wonky.]
I froze. Cookie the collie stormed over to me through the half-open door. "Quit fiddling around and go do something productive!"
"Anything! ANYTHING! Just quit playing detective in my office!"
"I'm not 'playing'," I growled. "I just want to find out why Troy--"
She began to nudge me to the main door. "I don't know, and I don't care. Speaking of Troy, his filing system was already a convoluted mess, so don't come waltzing in here and tossing papers every-which-way and stuffing them back in random spots, thank you very much!"
I was at the threshold by now, and turned back to her. "One day, Cookie, you're going to be sorry. I'll be solving murders, and high-value kidnappings--"
"Scoot." She tried to wave me away with her paw.
"--and I'll be famous. Everybody will know me, Dan, as the best detective who ever lived, and you'll wish you had been nicer to me."
The door slammed, leaving me battered in spirit but not defeated. I trotted away, heading back to my cabin.
