For the writers out there, this may be useful in your work. For anyone who may venture into cold winter areas, it may be useful in saving your life.  I learned some pieces of this as a kid growing up in Minnesota, but it’s more effective to know all the pieces.

In addition to the cold shock response, a small percentage of you may have what’s known as the mammalian gasp reflex.  This isn’t just a regular gasp of shock; it’s a huge gasp of air followed by an inability to breathe.  Like the cold water shock response, it will pass in a few moments (that feel like forever - I assure you, I’ve been there).  The key is to not panic.
