"Stevie." Caroline said, when the women asked for the name of her beloved dog. "I rescued her about a year ago, and I'm a huge Fleetwood Mac fan so it just felt like it was meant to be." She added, with a small laugh. "Have you got any dogs?" She asked.
"named after one of the best." she spoke with her gaze fixed on the happy pup, her fingers scrunching into the dog's fur attentively. "how long have you had her?" this time, pru lifted her chin to look up at the other.
for a beat, she smiled, despite the ache beneath her ribs. "i don't. i'm always at work though, so i guess you could say i'm never short on furry friends." her father's rule had stuck — focus on the animals at the clinic and let that be enough.

green reaper. bean harper.
his pulse thrummed with excitement as he scanned over shelves and display cases alike. it wasn't his first trip into a dispensary, but something about the place was far nicer than any other shop he'd ever ventured into. "any recommendations?" he tried to catch the attention of another, his smile soft and steady.
"looking for something to help me relax. sleep doesn't always come easy," he half-joked, half-confessed. it never came easy, but that wasn't the point. if anything, he knew it was unsettled energy trying to work itself out, but for once, he wasn't looking for trouble. "i'm not picky. if that helps."
@allwegetnow
if you asked him, that pie was a work of art. a masterpiece. truly one of the most incredible things he'd ever created, second only to lizard herself. the little girl was asleep in his arms, as it was way past her bedtime, and he knew they needed to get going soon, but decided to take one last look at his beautiful pie. "you know, of all the places i've travelled, maple brook is still, and always will be, my favourite." he said idly, to no one in particular. but then he spotted someone out of the corner of his eye, and he turned to smile at them. "like, look at these pies. don't they all look delicious?" he shifted the sleeping girl, debating putting her down in the wagon. however, she would only be this small for a little while longer, and he was going to miss this one day soon.
maple brook was quiet. he needed quiet, even if an unsettled energy hummed low and unforgiving beneath his skin. it was the kind of town where journalism came in the form of chatting up locals and covering community events. it was they very thing he needed and yet, the very thing he couldn't stand.
"really? where exactly have you traveled?" he was teasing, but there was a curious and genuine undertone to the question. if it were true, and the way baby had spoken it, it seemed so, then avi wanted to know why. "i mean, yeah. don't all pies look delicious though?" he shot the other a look, one brow raised and a crooked smile to match.

"They just need their nails trimmed." Ana said, as she pulled each rabbit out of their carrier one by one and placed them on the table. "And they're all really placid." She added, smiling at all four of them. Sure, Ana could try clipping their nails herself, but she just felt it was better to go to the vet. "I just hope I'm not the first crazy bunny lady to come into your office." She added, with a laugh. Herbivore pets were just better with her lifestyle, and their poop was good for composting.
"makes my job easy." for once, she wasn't looking for a case to consume her for hours on end. "actually, i don't really see them often, so it's nice. plus, i'd take bunnies over cats any day." she loved all animals, but cats had a way of ruining everyone's day when it came to sitting atop the cool metal table. "if you want, i can give them a look over while you're here. no charge," she offered beneath a smile.
There was something timeless about the books, all wrapped in brown paper with short descriptions on them. A sucker for the roman-tasy, she had a handful of them in her hands. Books were the few things that made her feel alive. "It's a risk, you know — but what if your mom secretly likes a little bit of a smutty scene?" Fallon raised a brow. "I have distinct memories of my grandmother reading romance novels... you know, like the dime store ones."
the thought, relentless and unwanted, had crossed her mind. "i think i'd be okay if i didn't ever know the answer to that," she countered, every word spoken slow and careful as she scanned over the paper wrapped books. “the ones with the really cheesy covers?” pru exhaled a barely-there laugh and grinned. “what i’m hearing is… i should take the chance with romance?”
blind date with a book. fallon delmar.
"if you were buying your mother a book, would you go with romance and hope it's not fifty shades-ish, or play it safe with a mystery that she'll still probably enjoy," she offered aloud, doubt weaved into every word like it was the most important question she'd ever asked. in a way, it was.
it was the difference between the older bernal woman raving and raging. "i'm the worst with surprises." she wasn't patient enough and the fear of falling short was too heavy.

"what can i say? i'm a connoisseur," he joked, cheeks warmed by the glasses of red he'd tossed back like there was something to be found within them. "is this a big maple brook thing? everyone coming together and being friendly and all that?" avi tore his attention away from caroline long enough to do a quick sweep of the room. some people were laughing, some people were deep in conversation, but none of them looked like the sharks he was used to looking for.
it was refreshing, but it also stirred a need something more. he wasn't built for quiet towns. "alright, you pick the next one. no pressure."

"i don't know what it says about me, but there's something about not knowing what you're getting that just..." he trailed off, eyes scanning over the array of books. there were a handful that caught his attention, but what if what if it was something he'd already read? what if the blurb made it seem better than it actually was? "shit, does that mean i have trust issues?"
it was rhetorical and he let it sit for a beat before his grin stretched wide. "i've seen you around the cat cafe, right?" he had, but questioning it came natural. "it's the best spot in town to get work done. i mean, who doesn't love a chocolate croissant and a furry friend to keep you company?"

"i'm only having one glass. maybe two," she half-warned with a crooked smile pointed at one of the few people capable of pulling her out of the shell she'd put herself in years ago. "is this the part where we take turns talking about the past and how much we'd give anything to go back?" she hated that a sadness bloomed just beneath her ribs, because if she had the choice to turn back time, even if only for one night, she would. and knowing what she knew about him, it was probably a shared sentiment.
"seriously though, it's good to see you again." her eyes dragged down the length of him before raising to meet his eyes. he'd changed since the last time she'd saw him, but she recognized the curve of his mouth and a heat crept up the back of her neck. "welcome home, right?"

line dancing classes at studio pointe. jd culpepper.
"come on, dude. it looks fun," he encouraged through a boyish grin that stretched so wide it made his cheeks ache. he wasn't the dancing type, but it was a bid at fitting into the town that had so far welcomed him in like one of their own. "if it makes you feel better, i'll go first." it was a genuine offer, but between the two of them, it was avi that knew no shame.
he studied the other's features, looking for an ounce of submission. "look, i'm not going to bully you onto a dance floor, but... you should have fun." he met jd's eyes and his smile softened to something less weighted by trouble. "what do you say? you wanna give it a shot?"

"She likes you." Caroline said, when she noticed that her dog was looking for attention from the person in the bench nearby. Stevie was a mixed breed dog, and the only thing Caroline knew for sure was that there was some kind of bulldog in the mix. She was a rescue and named by her previous owner, and as a Fleetwood Mac fan, Caroline felt like she was meant to adopt this dog. So she did. "She's not going to bite, don't worry. She's just really friendly and wants a pat."
her smile widened as the dog closed the distance, tail wagging in a way that pru recognized as excitement. "she's sweet." pru stayed put, letting the dog smell and greet her before reaching down to offer the much deserved head scratches. "she came to the right place for that." most days, pru liked animals more than she liked people. "what's her name?"
