Did you know that the frontpiece on FDNY fire helmets (the patch on the front) tells you all about where a firefighter works? The large white numbers correlate to their unit number. The colors signify the type of unit (ladder company is red, engine company is black, rescue is blue, squad is yellow and hazmat is green). So using the helmets in this photo as an example, a firefighter with the helmet on the left works at Engine 39, and the right at Ladder 16.
