Wake up, Astrid. Wake up.
The girl cracked open an eye and sat up with a groan, bringing her hands to her face before realizing they were still tingling from the trip into the dream world. She watched her fingers materialize with a frown. Lovely. A snout butted at her elbow, static jolting through her arm.
âOw,â Astrid frowned over at Kala, brushing her hair out of her face as the wind picked up. âWhat was that fââ
Before the girl could even finish her sentence, the Jolteon lept onto her chest, knocking her flat against the ground. The canine barely had time to yelp before it was plucked off of its trainer and pulled into the air between the talons of the Charizard Astrid had failed to notice.
Then she remembered to glance back towards the sky, watching as her only ally in this hellhole was carried up and away. Sparks crackled through the air around the Charizard and Astrid grinned. That was her Kala, alright. She wouldnât go down without a fuckinâ fight, even if she was 100 feet up in the air.
She pushed blindly against the branches reaching out towards her, ignoring how many scratches they left against her skin. The girl pressed ahead at a break-neck pace, nearly pitching forward headfirst as her boot snagged on a root. Astrid choked on her breath, grabbing a trunk to steady herself. She glanced upwards again and scowled. Fuckinâ trees. She could barely even see the shitty sky between them. Astrid stared up through the branches a moment longer before turning and slamming her boot into a trunk.
âDammit! God fucking dammit.â She sank down to the ground in a huff, ready to pull the plug and head back to the labs before it was too late. Where thâfuck was the reset button for this shit? Fingers balled into fists. It was her fault. It was her own fuckinâ fault she hadnât been watching when the stupid lizardâ
Wait. The girl froze. What was that fuckinâ noise? She stood sharply, brow furrowing when a cry reached her ears again, It sounded like a kitten or something. Â
Astrid frowned. What the fuck was a kitten doing in the middle of the forrest? Slowly, she followed the sound, coming to a stop at the base of yet another tree trunk. It was right here. It should be right here. There was no lost little skitty in sight. She huffed, crossed her arms, and looked up. Thatâs when she noticed it.
A little yellow ball of fluff was stuck up a tree, crying out with the most pitiful mews Astrid had ever heard. The girl almost laughed. Out of all the fuckinâ things she couldâve found in this nightmare, she stumbled onto a little lost Abra. The laugh died abruptly in her throat when a growl reached her ears, much closer, and much less friendly than anything the Abra could make.
She had barely turned her head when the Zoroark pounced.
The girl dropped to the ground as claws sank into the bark where her head had been a moment earlier. With a less than dignified shriek, she raced around the other side of the tree, counting on the Zoroarkâs claws getting stuck in the bark. Shit. Shit, shit shit. She couldnât outrun that thing.
Another cry came from up in the branches and it clicked. Right. Sheâd outclimb it.
Without a second thought, Astrid jumped up, catching a low hanging branch and clawing her way up the trunk. A growl sounded from below and Astrid caught the flash of the Zoroarkâs claws just in time to lift her legs out of the way. She scowled, slamming a boot into the thingâs snout and using the force to pull herself up onto the branch and well out of reach.
âHa! Take that you fuckinâ fleabag!â The grin plastered across her face faded as the animal circled the tree before lunging and burying its claws in the trunk.
âYeah, fuck you too, Fido.â Astrid leaned back against the trunk, closing her eyes and breathing hard when the timid cry reached her ears again. Right--the Abra. The girl cracked open an eye to find that the poor thing was only a few branches away, arms clutching tightly to its branch and mewls of fear spouting out between sniffles.
The girl climbed over to it, holding tight to the trunk and reaching out a hand. The Abra raised its head a fraction with a whimper.
âHey, little, um.. thing..â Astrid forced a smile she thought might be friendly, âIâm not gonna hurt you. Weâre both stuck up here âtil the big bad Zoroark down there gives it up.â Slowly, the Abra uncurled its tail, reaching out a trembling hand towards her.
âYeah, thatâs it, fluffball, just a little more anââ
The tree shook.
Astrid jerked back her outstretched hand, grabbing the trunk to steady herself and glancing down. The goddamn Zoroark was throwing itself against the tree. A terrified cry reached her ears and she looked back at the Abra. The little thing had been knocked from its perch, hanging by its stubby little fingers and trying to get a better grip on the branch again. The tree shook. One hand slipped from the bark.
âShit--hold on fuzzball!â Astrid gritted her teeth, grabbing hold of the branch and curling her legs around it until she hung parallel to the ground, passing hand over hand until she could almost reach the thing. The tree shook again. Was it just her imagination or was the trunk bending?? No, it was. It was fuckinâ bending. She reached the Abra, not even hesitating as she snatched it up by the scruff of its neck and set it on her stomach. The little thing clung to her like its life depended on it. It just fuckinâ might.
Astrid couldâve smiled at the thing. Unfortunately, the tree shook again. She shouldâve put her other hand back on the tree. She shouldâve held on tighter. She should have done a lot of fuckinâ things, but instead she fell down, down, down into the air with a scream.
Images of the labs flashed before her eyes as she fellâwasnât she supposed to see memories or some shit before she died? What a fuckinâ rip off. One of the techâs faces stuck in her head, some woman with glasses and a serious case of coffee breath. What was it she said? Appearances? Appearances! The girlâs mind raced back to the Charizard that had snatched Kala away. Flying. Wings. Teleportation--fuckinâ anything!! She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for impact.
It never came.
When she opened her eyes again she had to blink several times before it registered that she was floating. No--flying? The little abra was still in her arms, and blinking up at her in a stunned silence. She looked over her shoulder and grinnedâwings won out after all. A leathery pair of fuckinâ beautiful Charizard wings, no less.
Her grin was cut short as teeth closed around her ankle, jerking her sharply to the ground.
The Abra tumbled from her grasp with a cry and the Zoroark pinned her down, claws sinking into either side of her shoulders. The girl struggled beneath it, frantically trying to push off the weight crushing against her lungs. A frigid stream of laughter dripped into the air, sinking beneath her skin and stopping her heart cold.
âWhyâre you strugglinâ, babydoll?â
Struggling to remember how to breathe, Astrid looked up at its face. She shouldnât have. It wasnât a Zoroark that greeted her with the wolfish grin that never failed to make her skin crawl. It was somethingâsomeoneâmuch, much worse.
âNo.â Astrid gritted her teeth.â You canât be here. Itâs a trickâitâs a fucking trick!â
The man on top of her chuckled.
âYou fuckinâ wish. Iâm just as real as you are, dollface.â He bent low towards her, breath washing over her face as his grin stretched wider and wider. âIâm cominâ for ya.â
 âY-youâre not real!â
âYou know what Iâm gonna do when I find you?â A nail scratched down her check, leaving a red trail in its wake.
âThis isnât real!â Astridâs voice sounded in a broken shriek, eyes locked on the stony eyes above her.
âIâm gonnaââ The voice cut off with a yelp as a sharp crack echoed over her head, the weight vanishing from on top of her.
Astrid lifted her head, eyes still wide and fingers shaking as she sat up. A small yellow ball crawled into her lap and clung to her shirt as she stood. A broken tree trunk lay on the other side of the clearing. She didnât dare go near it. She could see the Zoroarks paws sticking out from underneathâthat was good enough for her. Whatever the fuck had thrown a tree across a fuckinâ clearing had her thanks.
It wasnât until she noticed the pink wisps of psychic energy curling off the bark and vanishing into the air that she made the connection.
Astrid took several confused looks from the severed trunk to the little yellow thing snuggled up against her chest. It couldnât haveâcould it? She raised an eyebrow, plucking the Abra from her shirt and holding it out in front of her.
i'm not trying to be mean or anything but why are you giving up on astrid's story? it's a little disappointing because I wanted to get to read your round
[ohh boy. this is gonna go under a cut.]
firstly, I don't think I am giving up on her story at all?? I mean, I get all the psa posts about people not finishing r3 and yeah, I'm probably not going to be able to meet that deadline, but I don't think I'm giving up on her. I mean, shit, she's one of my favorite oc's I've made in a long time and I still wanna stick with her story. and you'll still get to read it--just with words instead of comics 'cause I won't be able to keep up with the actual competition.
secondly, maybe it doesn't seem like I have a great excuse for not finishing r3, and I'm sorry if that's disappointing to you. but really, I just don't post what I've been dealing with bc I don't want to clutter astrid's blog with all my ooc problems. that's not what her blog is for. but yeah, I've been busy with school and family issues I had to take care of, and yeah, those things are gonna outweigh octs for me. I just prefer to keep them more private--that doesn't mean they aren't there.
so while those psa posts are wonderful and motivational and helpful and make me want to be able to finish r3 (because I do. I really fucking do.) that's just not the way things turned out for me. trust me, anon, I feel shitty enough about it as it is.
so as things look atm I'm prolly not gonna be finishing r3, which is regrettable, but hey, I got to r3 of my first actual oct! that's p damn good if I do say so myself. and I do. say so. so there.
but as far as astrid's story goes, I'll prolly be typing it up in fic form and posting that on here bc I feel like it turns out more like how I want when I write.
so! you will all get her r3 story and all that jazz even if I won't be finishing the round! idk maybe I'll keep her going with the rounds as an npc via writing, but we'll see~
Going to contribute to the drabble load with.. Revenge or Comfort Me. Decide the cast and/or awkwardness level on your own :'D
[so apparently the bianchis are bo's designated therapists]
The boy sniffled, swiping a sleeve against his stinging eyes. He leaned back against the wall, sliding down until he could feel the freezing ground through his jeans. Head buried in his arms, Bo shuddered with every passing sob, stopping only when he heard footsteps approaching through the snow. He froze, keeping his head hidden beneath his sleeves.
The toe of a boot nudged against his shoe. Bo hunched over further, his forehead pressing to his knees. The boot gave him a kick.
âOi, kid.â
Boâs shoulders tensed. He knew that voice. No way in hell he was gonna let that moron see heâd been crying.
âFuck off.â He could hear an exasperated sigh from Thomas. He chose to ignore it. Maybe heâd just go away.
He had no such luck.
A hand grabbed a fistful of his hair, tugging it upwards until Boâs head had no choice but to follow. The boyâs face hit the frozen air already flushed and leaking twin tracks of water down his cheeks. He scowled, rubbing the back of his hand against his eyes before glancing up at Thomas--and then quickly away again when he realized how close the manâs face was to his own. Itâs not like he expected the douche to crouch down to his level.
âI told you to fuck off, assface!â
âAnd look where that got you. Might want to try asking a bit more nicely next time.â The man frowned, and--after a moment--sat on the ground in front of Bo.
âNow, you gonna tell me whatâs wrong with you, or do I hafta hang you from a lamp post and wait for the cold to force it outta you?â
