“This is your own fault.”

June knew he was going to be late. He tried not to care too much, but he couldn’t keep himself from taking a shortcut through the park and rushing anyway. Which is how he ended up flat on his face in the middle of a sidewalk, a stinging pain biting at the side of his face and his books strewn across the sidewalk.

June cursed underneath his breath, sitting up slowly and rubbing the side of his face and wincing. Fuck, that was gonna bruise. As he gathered up his books, June kept silently telling himself over and over that this was his fault, that if he hadn’t been rushing this wouldn’t have– “This is your own fault.”

Okay, that definitely wasn’t inside his head this time. He looked up to find the source of the voice, and he found a man sitting on a bench immediately to his right, looking amused. June immediately sat up straighter, fixing his glasses and picking up the rest of his papers. “Hey, it’s not funny. I was in a hurry. It could have happened to anyone.”

Saturn: Any pets?  – I had a dog named Max growing up, but now I only have a fish. Her name is Monica, and she doesn’t have much of a personality. I’d like to get a cat sometime in the future, though!Vega: What’s something you’ve done that you wish you hadn’t?  – When I was maybe ten or eleven, some of my classmates dared me to steal this really, really nice stereo system from the local electronics store. Of course, they knew I would get caught, but I didn’t know that. It was this whole debacle with my parents and my school and the police, and it was really embarrassing. That day, I swore off a life of crime completely. I guess it was a good learning experience, but I still wish that I hadn’t done it.Hercules: Favourite instrument? – I like the guitar, both playing it and the way it sounds in general.

June bowed his head in silent thanks at the stranger and took a seat next to him on the bench, looking out over the pond. He had brought a book to read with him, but he found himself instead distracted by the way the sun shone off the water. It was a beautiful afternoon – warm with a slight breeze, and the tree behind them provided him with more than enough shade.

He pulled out his book, but it didn’t take him long to get distracted and stare out over the water. After a few minutes of comfortable silence between him and the stranger, June couldn’t help but ask. “Um, I know you probably want to be left alone – and if you want me to shut up, just tell me – but I was wondering what the logo on your hoodie is. It looks kind of familiar…”

Time was passing both too quickly and too slowly for his liking. Too slowly, since he was waiting for someone, but too quickly as they still hadn’t shown up. It had been a half hour since the arranged meeting time and he hadn’t gotten a call or text from the male. Tao was beginning to assume that he had been ditched, which wasn’t too uncommon for him. 

He faintly heard the other talking, not tuned into it at all until it seemed like the other was being hesitant. He paused the game to listen, looking down at himself as if he didn’t remember which hoodie he had put on that morning. “It’s from the Portal games, Aperture Laboratories.” He answered, taking his other earbud out as he had become long bored with the mind-numbing games. “And it’s fine, I don’t mind chatting.”

June needed a minute to think of where he knew the name from. Maybe he had a friend who played-- "Oh, yeah! My old roommate used to play those! I knew it sounded familiar!" Content with the answer, he grinned and nodded at the other. "Do you like them? They always seemed so difficult when I watched him play..."

The person next to him seemed to be getting more frustrated by the minute. Most people wanted to be left alone at the park, but the stranger seemed to be sitting on the edge of his seat -- waiting for someone, June assumed.

June liked to spend his free afternoons studying outside. He didn’t live too far from the local park, and after a few weeks, he found a spot he liked the most: a small bench near a pond, a group of trees nearby providing much-needed shade. It was the perfect spot to read, but he often found himself staring out at the pond, the water sparkling in the afternoon sun.

He had this afternoon off, so he went to the park like he always did. However, today he found someone already sitting there. Shit. June weighed his options in his head; he didn’t want to be rude, but that was the only spot he ever got anything done. In the end, he decided to just go for it. The worst the person could do was say he wouldn’t move.

June approached the bench, gently tapping the person on the shoulder. “Um, excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?”

Zitao was supposed to be meeting with someone after his classes, having been let out early so he arrived at the meeting place a bit too soon. Luckily, it was a nice, autumn day, the cool breeze paired with the warm sun comfortable in the jeans and hoodie he wore. 

He was idly playing games on his phone, one earbud in as he half listened to the sounds the games made, half listening to the sounds in the park, hoping to hear the footsteps of his friend. He heard some movement nearby, perking up briefly to see someone approaching him, but disappointed it wasn’t who he was waiting for.

He resumed playing the game after waiting for an ad to finish, frustrated that the free games were often littered with advertisements. “Yeah, sure. Go ahead.” Tao replied, not looking up from the screen as yet another commercial popped up.
