Novel of the Month: The Abused Protagonist Goes Off-Script
Author: July Youyun (七月游云)
Genre: transmigration, rebirth, modern setting, danmei
Rating: M (for violence)
My Synopsis: If The Glory was a danmei novel
My Actual Review: I'm so serious when I say nothing has ever given me the high that I got from watching The Glory until I found this novel. It's not so much that the plots are exactly the same (different genres, themes, etc. though the overarching theme of extreme abuse connects them) but that the extreme hatred that both MCs of their respective media feel towards the people who dragged them to and beyond their breaking points feels distilled and utilized in the exact same way. Like, a lot of rebirth novels, especially about family, tend to have the MC take the route of either exposing the antagonists' hypocrisy or just leaving everyone behind altogether and only fighting back when actively messed with, but Song Shiyi goes all in in making everyone's lives an absolute living hell. Not only does he just go feral nearly killing some characters with his own two hands, he also weaponizes his "craziness" to force his reputation-obsessed father to shield him from legal persecution even while he publicly wiles out. Add in the fact that he uses his knowledge of future events to get into the minds of his abusers... Song Shiyi feels less like a character at times and more like a resentful spirit physically haunting the narrative. This novel was fucking fantastic. (Oh, and the romance was sweet, too, but obviously that was not my focus this time around lol).
I have some content warnings for child abuse, relationship abuse, some semi-graphic sexual violence, some really graphic general violence, murder, and probably some other dark stuff I'm forgetting. Song Shiyi should have been allowed to starve all these people for a week before throwing them into a coliseum with box cutters and telling them the last one standing gets to eat a single slice of white bread. Keep a recording to burn as an offering for his mother. That's how terrible everyone (except the MC) was in this.

This is mesmerizing to watch.
actually physically painful to watch because you know months were spent masking all those frames for each of the kajillions of transitions in this
Holy………..shmokes…….
Oh?? My god??
I’ll try my best to describe this. It’s a video with a mash-up of a bunch of different Disney movies, set to a song that’s a mash-up of a bunch of other songs. That in and of itself wouldn’t make it praiseworthy, but this is DONE SO WELL that just, holy cow.
HOLY SHIT
Every time I see this, I HAVE to watch.
It is Law.
The thumbnail doesn’t do it justice, but I don’t think one single image really could.
unauthorized fucking thing!!!!!!

Hello season 5
I love media where the underlying message is to be kind , even if it isn’t the main plot.
I love media where the underlying message is that you are not the worst mistake you made and you are not the worst thing that happened to you
I love media where the underlying message is that people can change for the better
I love media that’s like love, actually is all around us
I love media that’s like “we can’t save anyone.” “we can always try.”
It isn't just that Knives Out protagonists win by being kind and steadfast. They win by sticking to what it is they're good at. What they've been called to do, as thankless and as demeaning as those jobs can sometimes make them feel. They didn't play the "game" like Benoit did. They just did what they knew they were good at.
Marta wins because she was a nurse and a caregiver before anything else. She wins the inheritance because she gave Harlan companionship, not just medical care. She gets the truth out of Ransom because she acted as a nurse, trying to save Fran even though she still dies in the end. Had Harlan just fucking listened to the actual medical expert in the room instead of himself, he would have lived.
Helen wins because she's a third-grade teacher—her job is literally educating, caring for, and looking out for kids. Glass Onion isn't just the working class vs the wealthy, it's an actual functioning adult woman vs a bunch of adult-sized toddlers, whining and throwing temper tantrums and thinking only of themselves. She plays games with her third graders, and in the end she wins by making a game of destroying everything Miles ever held dear, even getting the others to side with her.
Jud wins because he's an actual fucking priest, who actually embodies everything his god taught. He doesn't try to poach Wick's "flock" or anything, nor does he allow himself to surrender to anger and vindictiveness in the way Wick did. Jud is absolved of all his crimes because he just wants to do good by his church, in the name of his god.
Just as Blanc is an excellent detective, so too are these three spectacular at their jobs.
Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig just keep reiterating the same points in every film and I do love them for it.
• Respect the working class
• Fucking respect women.
• Listen to the local queer person who is excellent at their jobs and you will go far.
• Be kind in a cynical world.
obsessed with whatever dynamic this is:
benoit and his pathetic little meow meow who can do no wrong
There’s a certain folkloric idea that if you die at sea, your soul is sort of. Inextricably stuck in the sea. Because your body is irretrievable, your soul is also irretrievable, down out of the reach of the gods who look at the surface of the world. In Norse mythology, they said that the souls of sailors who died at sea are caught in the sea-goddess Rán’s net and dragged into her domain, a distinct and separate afterlife alongside Hel and Valhalla. Davy Jones Locker. The funayūrei. A lot of cultures agree that once the sea has a hold on you, even when your body has rotted and dwindled and been made food for crabs, it still won’t let you go.
Do you think we’re going to wind up saying the same thing about astronauts.
Going from Marta who literally threw up every time she tried to lie to Helen who was game to go to her sister’s murderer’s private island dressed as her and manages to extract motives and opportunities from everyone basically on her own, to Jud, who keeps running off to confess at basically every opportunity must have given Benoit such incredible amounts of whiplash
I actually have come around to the series being called Knives Out instead of named for Benoit in any way. Because Benoit isn't truly what ties it together, it's the consistent social commentary themes. And do you remember why it's called Knives Out?
"You're a pack of vultures at the feast. Knives out, beaks bloody."
THAT. That has not stopped being true. THAT is the heart of each movie.
It isn't named after the first movie. It's named after the line. It's named after the disregard of morals in the name of greed.
don’t even talk to me if you’re not willing to go on a ghost radio show to send me cryptic messages proving you never actually stopped watching me even tho we had a messy divorce after a month long gaslighting/love bombing unbalanced power dynamic shift in our relationship happened in hopes that i hear you as i drive a ghost two hours home in a taxi so turn on the radio because im scared and you’re normally with me but we broke up
