I got asked this question every single day on this blog. and my answer will always stay the same: as long as it's fiction and as long as you're not hurting anybody in real life, NOTHING you put in fanfics can EVER be wrong.

you cannot apply real-world moral compass on FICTION.

YOU as the writer have complete and total right/freedom to write WHATEVER YOU WANT. HOWEVER YOU WANT.

that's the whole point of fanfics: authors have the power, control and freedom to create their own world. no matter how messed up or disgusting or morally wrong it is, FICTION WILL ALWAYS STAY FICTION. a person's real-life moral compass can never ever be judged by what type of fiction they create and/or consume.

fanfic is creative writing and creative writing is a form of art. and the thing about art is that it doesn't have to always be rainbow and sunshine. it can be macabre and dark and brutal and ugly. and it's still a work of art that is just as valid and valuable.

YOU as the writer have all the power, rights and freedom to literally write WHATEVER YOU WANT. HOWEVER YOU WANT.

I am a stranger. people on the internet are strangers. YOU as a fanfic writer write FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR OWN ENJOYMENT. you do NOT need my opinion or permission when it comes to YOUR OWN HOBBY AND FREEDOM.

perhaps a hot-take, but i sincerely believe that there's no such thing as being "neutral-ship".

you can be uncomfortable with the proship label or the proship community, of course. you can simply say that you're anti-harassment or anti-censorship, or you can refuse to disclose your stance altogether as a way to keep yourself safe, obviously.

however, you cannot be "neutral" on harassment and censorship.

if you believe that harassment and censorship are okay, or should be allowed, you're antiship. if you believe that harassment and censorship are harmful, or should not be allowed, you're proship. there's no middle-ground with this.

I'm anti harassment and anti-censorship of fiction. However, I do believe certain things should be taken of the internet or 'censored': CSAM (of real children not the fictional stuff however gross it may be). Thus, I am not fully anti-censorship or pro-censorship.

And so that's why I call myself neuship and state my own exact stance as I just did here, because I see the antis condoning harassment while saying they don't condone harassment and I see proshippers condoning real CSAM.

Words have meaning but each group has twisted the meaning so much stating your own stance and following it means much more than a label.

i'm sorry, but you can't seriously think that being anti-censorship = condoning csam.

csam is a very serious crime that includes real children being abused and exploited. it is not a piece of fiction or someone's opinion about xyz, it is a crime that harms real people. do you understand that? csam being taken off of the internet is infinitely different than fiction books being banned because they depict things that are considered "obscene", or other forms of censorship.

csam harms people. fiction does not.

being anti-censorship has never included condoning csam. it is a stance against censorship, which does not apply to footage of real crimes being removed from the internet. csam is removed because it harms people. fiction is censored as a form of control and suppression over things that are deemed "wrong".

bringing up csam, of all things, is entirely uncouth and changes nothing about my original post; if you are pro-censorship and/or pro-harassment, you are antiship. if you are anti-censorship and anti-harassment, you are proship. and, as a reminder, there is no such thing as being "anti-censorship except for this" or "anti-harassment except for that".

I promise you if game of thrones and all those gothic literature haven't normalized incest — if slasher and horror movies haven't normalized murders or psychological torture, if hot villains haven't normalized manipulation or toxicity by now — then silly fanfiction isn't going to normalize shit.

if someone ever lets fiction affect them enough to the point they think bad things in fiction are good in-real-life because they're portrayed as such, then chances are that, with or without the fiction they consume, they are already troubled and they need help.

there are things you can worry about that are actually worrisome, but what type of fanfiction someone writes or reads is not one of those things.

you can, of course, find some things in fiction unpleasant. you can choose not to engage with fanfics that make you uncomfortable. but you have no right to tell other people what they can or can't create and/or consume. that is not your business.

and to my fellow writers, write whatever you want, however you want. no matter how messed up or morally questionable it is. you have all the freedom and power to write whatever you want, however you want forever. don't let strangers tell you what you can or cannot write.
