According to the Torah, Jewish farmers once took their first harvested fruits to the Temple in Jerusalem to express their gratitude to God. They were not only thanking God for an abundant harvest, but also affirming the link between Him, themselves, their land, and the collective history of the Jewish nation. They only offered the seven native species for which the land is praised - wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. These species are especially dependent on the blessing of rainwater for their growth, indicating the strong faith of the farmers, who must live in a perpetual state of praise and appreciation.
