For those who’ve been here from the beginning, I deeply appreciate your readership and feedback, and your support of all of us survivors who find solace in fiction as we continue to heal from our own trauma. Curating our individual experience online is often vital to this.
In that spirit: My own work doesn’t include live-action rape narratives. I ardently support other creators focusing on those elements in fiction! Indeed, I also write plenty of fiction myself that includes descriptions of rape—some of which are quite graphic and some of which are more hazy.
Overall I find it far more compelling to work, as Outlander canon itself tends to do, from the perspective of memory rather than one of immediate events. For details see the After Notes from my "Awake Your Sleeping Fears" story. Likely because of the specifics of my own abuse history and its origins in family trauma, I find myself far more interested in moral ambiguities and the exact boundaries of consent. To this end and many others, I critically engage people’s past experiences of sexual violence via retrospective reflection in most of my stories whether or not there is any graphic description of rape. Likewise, I explore the complexities of desire and how people navigate complicated relationships.

Some of these universes produce considerably better outcomes for the main characters than others over time. But across all of my different universes and arcs, I’m writing with an eye toward breaking cycles of abuse and allowing people meaningful chances to heal. Sometimes they make more of a hash of it than others. Accordingly, in some of my continuities the rape at Wentworth Prison is part of the narrative history and in others it gets averted somehow.
Finally, a little Q&A for the good of the order:
Q: What does your username mean? A: It's a portmanteau of malicious compliance and esquire terminology. Wholly apt for a writer in the BJR fandom.
Q: Are you really a doctor? A: Yes—but I teach the clinical kind rather than being one myself. I have a PhD and a couple other advanced degrees.
Q: Who is in your avatar image? A: That would be The Chariot from the Major Arcana of a traditional tarot card deck. Again, rather fitting for both self and subject.
Q: Why do you use so many em dashes? A: One of my toxic traits in this life, I suppose. Though my enduring fixation with Dickinson likely contributes.
Q: What is that plant in your blog banner? A: Pictured is phytolacca americana more commonly known as pokeweed. Can be food or poison depending on context and prep.
