I'm a lapidary artist which means I work with many variations of diamond-plated wheel, and can testify that the addition of the wheel has been a big improvement on stone tools.
I'm also a software product manager and wonder if we could call silicon microchips extremely intricate stone tools.
Because I do some explaining Israeli/settler mindsets, I saw one too many "oh no :( how do we reach them" and my honest opinion is that broadly, you don't. You don't humor them, you apply pressure to change reality around them. And when the reality changes, people adapt, they're forced to confront past ideas or they lose the power to cause harm.
It's not that changing minds isn't valuable, social causes need all the support they can get, and if you speak to an openminded person you can do that work with them. But it can't be the priority. I just think you can't change a whole radicalized fascist society by appealing to them in just the right way.
OP makes such a great point. We don't need to 'reach' people invested in oppression to create change.
I conduct behavioral science research with implications for mass communication, public policy, and social change. I focus almost exclusively on how to effectively communicate with people to see the truth, how to mobilize public support. But now that I’ve read this, I’m realizing I should start adapting my studies to explore actionable steps for directly changing reality as well. However, I’m not yet sure how we can do this. What does it look like to “change reality”?
For some reason, no one seems to remember that Israeli settlers were literally dragged out of Gaza by the Israeli government in 2005. This was government policy ("Unilateral Disengagement") under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who instead of bending to the Israeli far right, left the Likud party and formed the Kadima party, which successfully ran Israel for a short period.
(To translate this to American politics, this would be as if Dwight Eisenhower had in 1953 said "Yeah, we're done", pulled the US out of Korea on the spot, and then taken all the moderates out of the Republican Party to form a new political party called "Let's actually get shit done".)
Sharon was only able to do this because of an extensive military career critical to Israel's early survival, followed by a spell as defense minister, both of which definitely include war crimes. No one was going to call him weak on the Palestinians.
Even more unfortunately, neither the policy of keeping settlers out of Gaza, nor the Kadima party, survived Sharon, who stroked out of politics in 2006. Also, what passed for the Palestinian government spent the subsequent years dicking around with internal battles between Hamas and the PA, so no gold stars to anyone here.
I'm afraid none of this is very helpful, because the way that facts were changed on the ground was "former militarist tells everyone on all sides to fuck off, he's going to do the thing". This is not a formula anyone cares to repeat, for obvious reasons.
I appreciate the sentiment but I don't get all those "we made it to the longest night of the year! the light will start returning soon! it's all uphill from here & we're halfway there!" posts because like. Oct-Dec is the easier half of Winter. Jan-Apr is way harder. there's no big holidays or decorations, everyone is kind of over the whole Cozy Hygge Sweaters & Cocoa vibe so they're just tired & restless instead, and the whole thing is so drawn out & uneventful that it feels like it lasts 10x longer

Cook a stupid number of calories, like industrial quantities of roast duck and pork belly
Invite over everyone I know (and their parents and their kids) and everyone my husband knows (and their partners and babies) and everyone my kids know (and their parents and siblings)
Assemble and load up the four tier tray that I co-own with a friend (we named it Trayoncé) with all the Asian desserts I like best and also fortune cookies
Decorate my house with the tackiest lantern string lights I can find and love
Plan this party with all the power and might of a product manager
Anyways, this is my SAD coping mechanism. You find yours, but you can't go wrong surrounding yourself with people you like and feeding everyone.

I decided to start quilting by making both my children bed-covering quilts for their twin beds out of ~30 different lovingly selected fabrics. This was an ambitious project when I started it the day after Thanksgiving. By the time it was December 18th and I'd just finished cutting and finalizing the design, my husband's eyeball of "you sure this can't wait" was starting to get tired.
Folks, I finished those quilts and tied them up in ribbon at 3 AM of December 25th. Then I promptly fell over because it had been a solid week of staying up until 3 AM sewing, while binging Reign (thank the spirits of Christmas that aesthetic didn't make it into my quilts).
I woke up for Christmas morning around 11 AM, and even then I managed it only because aforementioned husband said "You worked insanely hard and long to get this done by Christmas, you should probably be there for Christmas." The girls liked their quilts, though they've been used more for pillow forts than sleeping.
I tell this story not to brag, but to add two more salient details: it was Christmas of 2020 and I was 2 months pregnant. That is the level of insanity I was at. You, dear friend, do not have to do anything like this unless you're similarly insane, a state I wish upon no one.

starts off as a cooking show and devolves into a heartfelt comedy of errors as all these professional top chefs use their decades of training & skill to try to help this one kid eat a balanced diet
by the end of the season the chefs have combined their knowledge to more-or-less figure out how to consistently make food that the judge is willing to eat. at which point we start over with a whole new season and a new judge with all new food issues!
spin-off series where there is an entire panel of judges consisting specifically of one large family whose members have multiple dietary restrictions. the contestants must planning a week's worth of dinners that account for everyone's needs, using commonly available ingredients on a normal household budget. they are not allowed to repeat meals

My memory helpfully supplies, "Hey remember that time you got interested in that guy because he did all the dishes after that party you threw? You just woke up in the morning and all the dishes were done, and the chairs were lined up against the wall. And you figured out who it was and asked him out."
My rational brain adds, "FINE. Prior experience does not justify misreading the text but it does justify this PSA

If you have achieved something, please remember to observe a mandatory period of basking in the warm glow of your achievement like a lizard on a stone, lest you teach your brain that effort is futile, actually, because it didn't get to enjoy its happy chemicals, so, naturally, nothing good ever comes of trying. (And no, avoiding punishment is not a reward!)
I recommend, like, 5% of basking time in relation to whatever time you invested into achieving the thing minimum. And if you can't make your own bask, friend-brought is fine (= tell your friends!).
5% is a long time for some things and the idea of actually celebrating my efforts for that long is kinda blowing my mind. hm.
This takes on a whole new meaning if you've done the kind of PhD that sucked so much soul out of you that you're still recovering, 13 years later. Is it too late to take five months off to bask?

One of my favorite bits in season 1 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the scene where she gets up at stupid o'clock to do her hair and makeup and then goes back to bed, so her husband can wake up next to a gorgeous goddess. I know it's played as a symbol of the false premises of their marriage, with a dash of "how could he cheat on her when she's working so hard at this"
BUT
I feel that this also serves as a valid commentary on how women in movies aren't allowed to be less than perfect even when first waking, which to my mind is the time of day when everyone is allowed to be an absolute troll if they want.
