The moon is only waxing half the time
Have you heard the phrase, “nature abhors a vacuum?” Here on Earth that does seem to be pretty true. When you pour water out of a glass, the glass simultaneously fills back up with air. There is no “void” or empty space where the water once was. (Outer space is a different matter!)
Suppose you have a glass full of low self-esteem that you no longer want. Using magic you pour all the low self-esteem away. What fills up the cup after that? I think it is incorrect to say that self-love automatically flows back in. There is no rule to say that when you get rid of something, it’s opposite comes to you.
If you pour out a glass of water, air fills the glass. The same if you poured out a bucket of lava or a bottle of antifreeze. Air refills the container because air is what just happens to be available for the job.
Let’s return to that cup full of low self-esteem. You have poured it it. Now what refills it? Whatever just happens to be available for the job. Another part of your psyche may expand and fill that space. If you don’t really care what comes up then your job is done. If you do care, however, you have more steps to take.
If you want your cup to be filled with something else, you have to pour that right back in there. Brew up some high self-esteem, or some kindness or love or whatever you like, and pour it in the empty space.
This tedious cup analogy exemplifies the concept of both conjuring and banishing as part of a balanced work of magic. When you banish, you create an empty space, and it will fill up with “just whatever” (in fact, since whatever you just banished is the perfect size and shape to fill up that hole, it is liable to slide right back in to your life.) Instead of letting that empty space be, conjure good and enjoyable things to be there instead. If you banish a toxic person, conjure the love of your friends and form extra bonds to fill that space. If you banish low self-esteem, conjure self-love.
I think most any magical practitioner knows that the waxing moon suits conjuring, and the waning moon suits banishing. But while I see many spells to draw money, friendship, desirable situations, etc., I see few spells to banish poverty, loneliness, or unwanted situations.
Imagine your whole life in a huge bowl. If your bowl is full, there may be no more room for wealth. First, you may need to pour out some poverty. If your bowl is full, there may be no more room for kindness – you must first banish meanness.
I think there is a concept that ‘poverty’ or ‘meanness’ or ‘low self-esteem’ are vacuums of money, niceness, and self-love that merely need to be filled. I propose that they are actual forces that take up room in our lives. In order to get forces you want in your bowl of life, you first need to pour out some stuff you don’t want. And for an extra bit of “oomph,” bind it right out of your life.
