Ace was the chubbiest little baby and you can’t tell me otherwise. Chubby, squishy cheeks, little rolls of fat on his arms and legs, and a round little tummy. Imagine if Rouge had lived and raised Ace; she would take countless pictures of him as a baby and show them to his friends when he got older, much to Ace’s horror and embarrassment. 😂😂

My headcanon is that Ace was the fattest little baby, and I will die on that hill. Chubby little cheeks, fat little rolls on his arms and legs, and a round, squishy tummy. One time, Luffy and Sabo found Ace’s pictures and told him that he looked like a dumpling. Imagine if Ace got turned into a baby; the Whitebeard Pirates would get nothing done because they’d spend all their free time fussing over how cute he is and poking his fat little cheeks and belly.

I assumed Ace joined the Whitebeard Pirates when he was 18, but lore has evolved and been retconed since the Marineford flashback it would seem. In the clip above, Ace seems closer to 17, voice still high-pitched and young-sounding.

And he sounds so carefree here, it hurts knowing what would come later but also it heals my soul a bit to see him just be a kid instead of the tormented Ace we saw during Marineford. You can tell he's so happy with the Whitebeard pirates.

He was a cheeky lil munchkin and it's no wonder they all loved him.

Ace was very much the baby of the Whitebeard crew, much like Chopper is to the Straw Hat Pirates. He was at his happiest once he joined the WB Pirates and found a stable environment where he could relax and just be a child. Knowing how young and innocent he was makes his death all the more painful, especially given how much he was loved and cherished. He was their baby brother that everyone was super protective of. 😭

OMG he’s just a baby and doesn’t know any better at that point—he’s just going by what Hiriluk taught him, only wanting to save his adopted father’s life. And Hiriluk drank that soup, knowing it would kill him, before confronting Wapol because Chopper’s kindness moved him, and he wanted to die on his own terms. Seeing Chopper break down in tears when he learned the truth broke my heart! 😭

OMG he looks like a little teddy bear with antlers!! I was genuinely worried that the CGI studio and the actors would screw it up big time, but I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong! I want to kiss his booboos and read him bedtime stories until he falls asleep. I want to fatten him up with some home-cooked meals. I want to carry him around in a stroller. I could never say no to those huge eyes and tiny blue button nose! He’s a baby, and he must be protected at all costs.

If Ace survived Marineford, I know he'd struggle with the guilt of feeling responsible for the war and everything that followed, but how would he handle knowing the entire world knows he's Gol D. Roger's son?

We saw how the public's image of him changed when his parentage was revealed, with one woman saying "If he's the son of Gold Roger then he must be atrocious! Good thing he was caught."

When he was a child who asked about Roger and "What if Gold Roger had a child", people weren't looking at *him* when they said what that child would deserve. He knew he was that child but they didn't.

But now the world knows. Everywhere he'd go, people would see Roger's Son, instead of Ace. There's also the people who wanted revenge on Roger who'd start targeting him.

Also, no way the journalists wouldn't slander him and paint him as *something* that causes pain and suffering around him wherever he goes. Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates would immediately tell him not to believe that kind of sensationalist bs but Ace being Ace would definitely internalise what is said and try to distance himself from his family to protect them. Not that they'd let him, mind you.

I think getting used to people knowing he's Roger's son would be very difficult for Ace. That's something he did NOT want revealed, because he was (rightfully to an extent) convinced people would immediatly hate/abandon him if they found out. That kind of fear isn't overcome overnight.

I just can't see Ace NOT struggling with the world knowing he's the Pirate King's son. Yet in Ace Lives Aus that's something that's almost always overlooked.

This is so sad to think about. I can’t begin to imagine how Ace would struggle knowing that the entire world is aware of his lineage. He would be targeted by Marines and pirates who had beef with Roger and would blame Ace for his father’s wrongdoings. Whenever he goes out in public, people treat him like kind of freak, whispering nasty things about him when they think he can’t hear them (he can, and the things they say make him want to throw up). I can see the family members of the pregnant women who were killed in Baterilla confronting him and blaming him for the losses of their wives, mothers, and sisters, even though none of that was Ace’s fault and he lost his mother too. And yes, sleazy journalists and propagandists would have a field day writing slanderous articles about Ace, calling him a demon child, falsely accusing him of committing horrific crimes like burning down an entire village, killing the children and men while sparing the women and making them his sex slaves. Theorizing that one day he’ll lead an army of pirates to overthrow the World Government and enact a reign of terror where pirates rule the world.

All of the stigma and persecution he’d be subjected would destroy what little self-worth he had. He’d probably start thinking that all those journalists who try to paint him as something that brings misery and suffering to everyone around him are right. He’d become withdrawn and depressed, distancing himself from his family and friends because he thinks his existence is a curse to them. Of course, Luffy and the others don’t believe that BS and won’t let him get away that easily.

On the bright side, Ace is surrounded by people who love him and support him through thick and thin. Luffy will punch anyone who badmouths his brother and makes him cry, while writing a whole-ass essay detailing why Ace is a great person and a great brother. Sabo would beat up any journalists and trash their offices for slandering Ace. The Whitebeard Pirates are super protective of Ace and will get murderously angry at anyone who tries to harm him, because he’s their baby brother who brings so much hope and light and joy into their lives, just like Luffy has done for his nakama.

And some of the family members of Baterilla victims, along with the survivors, may approach Ace to tell him that they don’t blame him for what happened. That he and his mother were victims of the Marines’ paranoia and vindictive cruelty just like they were. They tell him that Rouge was one of the bravest people in the world, because she willingly gave her life to ensure that her son had a chance to live.

This does make Ace feel a little better, even if he still struggles with the survivor’s guilt and PTSD from Whitebeard’s death and Marineford in general.

I think the Marineford war showcased pretty well how Ace felt about himself. I'll never accept this argument that Ace's ego were his downfall because... What ego?

Ace didn't think he deserved to exist because of his blood, didn't think he deserved to be loved. He never wanted anyone to die for him in the war. He tried to push Luffy away with harsh words because he didn't think he was worth Luffy's love and determination. He didn't want Luffy to endanger himself for him, and Ace knew how strong Luffy already was at that point.

What part of that spells ego, exactly?

Every time Ace tried to kill Whitebeard, the rest of the crew would laugh at Ace and go all, “What a cute little scamp! Thinking he’s all tough and can kill Pops!” Whitebeard even patted Ace on the head like a small child while calling him a “little whippersnapper” and telling him to go outside and play. Marco once told him it was way past his bedtime after his 50th failed murder attempt. This, of course, would only piss off Ace even more and make even try even harder to kill Whitebeard, only to once again fail miserably. The reason everybody laughs it off? Because much older and tougher pirates and Marines tried and failed to kill Whitebeard decades before Ace was even born, and some of have actually came close to succeeding. So Ace’s attempts are the equivalent of a tiny 1 week old kitten hissing and spitting at everyone.

Ace imagines that every freckle on his body is a kiss from his mother. Every time he wonders what Rouge was like and what his life would’ve been like if she lived and raised him, he counts his freckles and thinks she’s watching over him and kissing him goodnight every time he goes to sleep.

Ace hates being underestimated and treated like a child because of his age. When Marco, Thatch, Vista, and Fossa went out drinking one night, Ace wanted to tag along (he was only 18 at time), but they initially told him no and made him stay on the ship because he was “too young” to be hanging out in bars filled with unsavory types. Ace made a big fuss because he was the former captain of his own crew and a commander on Whitebeard’s ship, so he should be allowed to hang out with his brothers and be treated like an equal. Marco and the others relented, but they still kept a close eye on Ace to make sure he wasn’t drinking too much or getting taken advantage of by sleazy men.

Ace has a fascination with all things big, round, fat, and squishy. One of his favorite pastimes was climbing on Atmos, Teach, Blamenco, and Jinbe and bouncing on their bellies like trampolines or hugging them while commenting on how soft they squishy they feel. Jinbe is flustered but secretly touched by Ace’s affectionate hugs. Teach calls him a weirdo and pushes him off. Atmos and Blamenco happily accept Ace’s hugs and let him bounce on them, because they know that Ace sees them as huggable rather than intimidating like most people do.

Whitebeard once mentioned that Roger was 9 feet tall, and Marco wonders if Ace will one day undergo a growth spurt and become as tall as his father. Ace is terrified at the thought of this happening, because he doesn’t want to resemble Roger in any way, even in height. He sees his comparatively diminutive size as a way to distinguish himself from a man he hates despite being related to him by blood. He compulsively measures his height every day, and prays every night that he remains “tiny and adorable” for the rest of his life.

Once when Ace was little, he broke his arm after falling off a tree he was climbing on. He suffered a compound fracture, and when Makino arrived with a doctor to treat it, Ace tried not to cry despite being in immense pain, because (in his words) “only babies cry, and I’m not a baby! 😤” But Luffy and Sabo weren’t fooled for a second because they saw the tears that filled Ace’s eyes. As soon as the doctor was finished and Ace was resting, Luffy and Sabo visited him, and Ace began wailing hysterically because of how painful a compound fracture is. Instead of making fun of him, Luffy and Sabo hugged their brother and let him cry himself to sleep.

Ace loves babies and children and is very good with them, but he doesn’t think that he should have children. Not only because he doesn’t want them to be targeted by the World Government for being related to Roger like he was, but he fears that he won’t be a good father because his only references for parenting were Garp and Dadan, and he knows how his upbringing has affected him emotionally, and doesn’t want to repeat the cycle of poor parenting.

Everyone assumes that Ace is promiscuous and has had multiple partners in the past, but in reality Ace is still a virgin. He is terrified of sexual intimacy for a variety of reasons. First, he worries that if he enters a long-term relationship and confesses that he’s Roger’s son, his lover will reject him and abandon him. Second, he worries that anyone who is in a relationship with him will be targeted by the World Government for being associated with him if they ever discovered his lineage. If his partner was a woman and he got her pregnant, he fears that she’ll be hunted down to eliminate Roger’s bloodline, just like his mother and the pregnant women of Baterilla.

When Ace was around 8 years old, after Garp told him who his father was and the circumstances of his birth, he once overheard Dadan saying “he’s the son of the devil, with the devil’s luck” and he could fall off a cliff for all she cared. While Dadan was extremely drunk and didn’t mean it, it still hurt Ace to his core, because he was convinced that even his caretaker hated him for something he had no control over. He locked himself in his room for the whole day and cried for hours until he fell asleep. He didn’t even come out for dinner because he was too depressed to even eat.
