More stuff from my reread of the Iliad:

Hera in popular media is often depicted as fragile or something but she kind of plays the part of Athena’s chariot driver in this one, implying she can be right in the middle of the battle

When Athena’s not in her battle outfit she likes wearing pretty dresses made out of fabric that she weaves herself

Hector comes into town to tell the Trojan women to make sacrifices to Athena to kill Diomedes but Athena is like no I’m the reason that Diomedes has been killing everyone I’m not gonna help you

Diomedes refuses to fight Ares who’s helping the Trojans and Athena is like get up loser we’re gonna fight him anyways and she goes to drive his chariot for him wearing an invisibility helmet so Ares doesn’t see her which presumably means to outside observers it looked like Diomedes was charging into battle on a chariot that was driving itself

Diomedes successfully stabs Ares who gets scared off

Ares goes home to Zeus and is like daaadddd Athena got one of her humans to stab me why do you let her get away with everything

Zeus is like I hate you so much and if you weren’t my son I would’ve thrown you off the mountain years ago. But you are my son so come on let’s get you healed up and washed you big baby

Paris and Hector storm out of the gates of Troy together action movie style and start immediately killing a lot of Greeks left and right

Homer pauses to tell you the entire life story of every man they kill so this bit takes a while

King Charles did pull Excalibur out of an anvil as part of a secret ceremony in the basement where they keep merlin in oak tree based cryosleep but so could most Europeans these days. Also a lot of non Europeans. Because see almost everyone is somehow related to Charlemagne so at this point everybody’s got royalty in their family tree. Personally I think they should let Merlin out and introduce him to weed I think he’d like it and understand it.

They don’t know where Arthur is. I think they lost him in the blitz. Like he might’ve gotten out. No idea where he ended up. If you ask me I think he probably walked to France along the bottom of the sea floor and became addicted to cigarettes and cheese. Galahad is still out there looking for the holy grail. Them saying he found it was just propaganda. I think he was last spotted at a gas station outside of Tijuana in the 1980s. Anyways if I get carried off by masked guys wearing top hats in the middle of the night throw some tea into the harbor for me.

During fight scenes in the Iliad there’s even more lists than usual because every single time that a named character dies (and there’s a lot of them) Homer has to give you the story of his life and who exactly is gonna be mourning for him when he doesn’t come home.

Which is good at showing what the horrors of war look like on a personal level. I kind of like it. But also eventually all of the sad stories just start blending together.

And then in addition to that sometimes when a guy kills someone or is about to kill someone he gloats, retelling the life story of the guy he killed and telling everyone on the other side to suck on his nuts because he killed their friend and now his children and wife (who he also knows the name and life story of for some reason) will have to live without him haha suck on that

Also there’s the long speeches people give to the gods while they’re removing a dead man’s armor. Yelling at Zeus usually. And then you can tell that Homer is stalling for time trying to remember what happened next because he starts listing off the order in which everyone started looting bodies. There’s also extremely detailed, graphic, and gory descriptions of how almost everyone dies, including one guy whose eyes pop out of his skull for some reason.

God, I love this book.
