This may be a bold claim, and I would love for someone to correct me on this, but I gotta get it off my chest:

I do not believe "faeries steal names" was a trope before I used it in Taboo. It is something I invented for my entry in the SCP-4000 contest in 2018.

If the concept existed before then, I arrived at it independently. But I don't think that's the case. If you search variations of "fae steal names" on Google, and then add "before:2018", the results you get are very different.

Names have always been important in fae lore, but not as a transferable commodity. The whole idea of a person losing their name in Taboo was not even inspired by folklore, but by the Forest of Forgetfulness in Through the Looking Glass. The fae in Taboo having lost their names was a metaphor for genocide.

I bring this up because I feel like I've been seeing this concept pop up more and more lately outside of SCP circles. The first few times it happened I went, 'oh, I guess my idea wasn't as original as I thought.' Like, I couldn't even begin to think the SCP wiki had that much influence.

But I also began to see terms like "cognitohazard" and "breached containment" start to appear outside the fandom as well. Eventually one day I saw someone off-site saying that the twist in Taboo didn't land because they already knew fae stole names, and that finally made me think, 'no, that shouldn't be possible.'

Again, if anyone has evidence to refute this, I'd love for you to bring my ego back down to earth. But wow, wouldn't that be neat?

EDIT: In the brief time since I posted this it's come to my attention that a similar phenomenon happens in a 2014 web serial called Pact. Guess I may have to settle for "popularized" rather than "originated", heh. Excited to give it a read regardles! I'll leave this up in case anyone else has something they'd like to add about the history of this trope.
