Someone who recently read the SNES comics here! I don't recall seeing Peppy's tail at all. (But there was another bunny tail seen in the Goodbye Fox ending of Command. We see Peppy's granddaughter's tail, and again it's a little puffball like Lucy's.) I think you and the other anon are right about his tail being hidden by his coat though.
//Thanks, Nonny! And you're right!
She's a cutie, but wtf is that top lmao
Clearly only the females have tails, males don't, I should know, I'm a marine biologist-
The discussion about tails just made me realize about why Peppy may not have a visible tail like Fox. Maybe it's just small/fluffy enough that he can just wear his undies / pants over it without it being an issue? Or if that seems too uncomfortable and restrictive maybe he wears jocks
//Can't find examples, but yeah, it might explain why Peppy is never rendered or drawn without a visible tail--his may be hidden under his coat. I'd say it's popping out of his pants, though, because it's still a limb that needs a range of movement.
I think the only instance I've seen a bun tail ever depicted in any Star Fox was that art piece of Lucy and Peppy reminiscing about Vivian.
Depicted as a puffball. Now we know that it's just the tail curled up!
(Continuing from my previous ask) Here's the juicy Peppy secrets! Number 1: In his academy days he once got drunk and twerked on his bed! (Rumor has it there's a video of the incident buried in the archives somewhere) Number 2: James and Peppy in their youth partook in some serious snogging - their favorite place was by a lake on Corneria! Number 3: Not many folks know this, he HATES it when someone calls him "Peppyroni"! Number 4: He has a MASSIVE crush on Jessica Rabbit!
//That last one, I'll bet! Who can resist Jessica Rabbit? I can't! Though with Peppy, he thought she looked weird without the rabbit traits, until someone put rabbit ears and tail on her (me, I did).
For 1.) PAHAHAHAHA! Maybe what he meant to do is demonstrate wiggling his tail, he ended up twerking instead. FUN FACT: Did you guys know that rabbit tails are actually FUCK LONG, but they look like little cottonballs because they're curled up against the butt?
Clearly James wanted to post the video on the Lylatian equivalent of Youtube but Peppy convinced him otherwise. Probably by blackmailing him with juicy info about Vixy.
2.) Ohh, damn, I lowkey ship them LMAO. But in the end, I tend to prefer them as a QPR of sorts, given they have wives and children of their own and they don't strike me as polyamorous. WITH THAT SAID: Peppy def would have experimented! Maybe snogged with Jimmy to see if he really likes him in THAT way. With my interpretation of Peppy, no. This is what had him decide his love and devotion to James isn't romantic. It goes beyond romance, familial, or platonic. Something even more.
Ain't gonna lie, tho, I will consume all James x Peppy content because it's so damn cute asfasfa
3.) ... That's new LMAO. I love it <3
Comes back with Katina take-out boxes by the dozens. "So it wasn't pizza, but there was still a roach! Had to chase it all over the Great Fox with ROB! What a headache. Anyway, what did I miss?"
//Nothing!~
Peppy! Got any hobbies outside of the whole shooting spaceships job?
"I read charts, maps, and books, mostly. Got a few I've been wanting to catch up to. Got some novels I've been wanting to crack into, plus some science and history journals I haven't touched in a while. Need to see if there is anything I have missed in reading about, especially other planets and their colonies!"
❝ —What's a StarFox? ❞
"Oh! Hello, kid! Why, we're a Lylatian team of mercenaries for hire! We got our flight and combat training from the Cornerian Academy, but we ain't military types! Not anymore at least.
"Don't let the name fool you, the Fox part is just our leader! I helped found the Team with his old man, and now, his son leads Team Star Fox!"
So... What do you think of Peppy's new voice and design?
GET MAD.
//In all seriousness, I'm rather ambivalent. On one hand, I'm completely enamored by the redesigns. They're calls backs to the original puppets, and Peppy's in particular makes me think of he 80s-90s cartoons in how they stylized rabbits. I LOVE everyone, even Fox, Falco, and especially Slippy. I love Falco's birb peets, I love Fox's expression range, I love Slippy's voice, I love the dialogue changes, I love the presentation of the new challenges, I love that it's compatible with the N64 controller, there is so much I have to love!
But why ambivalence? It's just a case of getting used to the new designs when I have been so accustomed to the toony cutesy look since Adventures. Also, while I love the new Peppy and will take the time to get used to him (including that adorable double chin!), not sure if I can handle the Southern accent being much more exaggerated, how close together his ears are on his head, how his incisors are hidden in his mouth instead of being visible, and how his nose is so incredibly short and close to his eyes.
With all this said, I am LAUGHING at how people are griping about how "realistic" the Team looks when they're still super heavily stylized, especially Peppy. Alongside my comments about the ears, nose, teeth, and eyes-
Have people SEEN what a rabbit looks like? That is NOT realistic. AT ALL.
....Though now that I've looked at real life rabbits, huh. Their ears ARE relatively close together atop of the head than I recalled. Just not THAT close. But nice! Well, I can be proven wrong.
Anyway, love the designs. Just gotta get used to everyone. I don't know if I'll be drawing Peppy in this style, but I can try.
In a response to a previous ask you mentioned Star Fox being a love letter to the sci-fi genre. I was curious if you had any recommendations for series/games that might have inspired Star Fox?
//Most are hard speculations but not confirmed via interviews, but the bae @selfish-swine did an examination post on some of the more obscure references that foreign audiences may likely not get (as they're retro anime that seldom get localized). Takaya Imamura said somewhere in his twitter, (can't find the exact tweet, and I don't like twitter) that Star Wars was an influence, and Independence Day (1996) was a big one on Katina from an interview from Miyamoto (I think it's in the interview featured in the back of the N64). Can't forget about Sector X's Spyborg being straight up V'ger ("Where is the creator?") from Star Trek: the Motion Picture (1979)
A few of the other references are a bit more subtler, but otherwise obvious if you have an eye for retro anime. Space Pirate Captain Harlock is one that you just can't ignore, given we have the Harlock-class frigates that straight up look like the Arcadia. Sector Y in itself is strongly reminiscent of the Gundam series, seen in our bipedal shield-bearing mechs and how they are deployed from a white base.
Star Fox Zero has a couple references too. In an interview, Miyamoto thought of turning the Arwings into bipedal mechs as opposed to the avian-esque Walker mode, but the idea was shot down; this might be an homage to Macross and other giant robot/mech anime. The mech forms for the Wolfen, though, they're straight up Zoids. CappnRob of course mentioned Armored Trooper VOTOMS in the Venom scenes, especially as you're approaching Andross.
But of course, the biggest and most influential, stated a few times by Miyamoto and co., is the TV show Thunderbirds (1965), as the original Star Fox on the SNES had the core team as puppets.
And just watching the opening themes of the show REALLY shows where Star Fox as a vibe came from.
I have been cracking down on Thunderbirds lately, and this is a beautiful delight. The models, the scaling, the props, the puppetry, everything is fantastic. And while the puppets themselves are human in a 60s setting primarily focused on rescues and the occasional spy mission (it WAS the 60s...), I got more Star Fox vibes in this show than almost any other sci-fi show due to the emphasis on environment and spectacle over any deep character lore.
Not saying deep character lore is bad (I WANT MORE), but watching the show made me realize that.... yeah, now I know why the Lylat Wars story is told a third time in Star Fox Zero. As much as I would love to have more DEEP LORE of Star Fox, in the end, it's not about the gun fights and edgy rivalry. It's about the environment, the setting, the navigation through it all, and the spectacle.
AND THAT IS A-OKAY. I respect the vision. We'll always havd fan interpretations if we want to see more. For me, I just hope that people don't lose the vision that makes what Star Fox is in canon.

Mun! :D Have I got some juicy and embarrassing Peppy secrets for you! I'd tell you right now, but Peppy's roaming around, so I'll wait until the coast is clear!
//Oh, splendid! Well, thankfully, I know how to get Peppy distracted. YO, OLD MAN!!
"Don't call me that, you're just about my age now!"
//Damn, I really am that old, huh. Well, in that case.... gotta tell you, Fox and Slippy have some more pizza boxes piling at the bridge and I just saw a roach!"
"WHAT?!? I told them to throw those out yesterday!!" Peppy stomps out to yell at the boys.
//Eeeeexcellent. Now, the tea. Spill it!
What was Lucy's first word(s)?
[Here's a happy question about words, since that other anon decided to ask a sad one about the last words to James lol]
"She said 'Papa'! She said 'Papa'! Ohh, at that moment, I knew she was gonna be papa's princess!~ My little Daddy's Girl!~"
What's your type Peppy? Were there any lucky ladies before Vivian?
"Well, I, uh.... I had come across other cute rabbit ladies before... especially the ones with long legs...."
/* Has the mun ever tried the Smash Remix mod for Super Smash Bros. 64? And if they have, does Peppy have any opinions on some of those characters added in said mod? */
//I know OF it, but never played or tried it, so sorry pal, can't answer this one.
Mun! It's great to see you're active here again, hope you've been well! :D *looks round to make sure Peppy isn't there* Got any new embarrassing and juicy stories about Peppy you'd love to share?
//Good to see you pal! Let's see! Well, there was this one time Peppy and Vivian got bored one day in Corneria and decided they were going to get experimental while out by the lake...
"DON'T SPREAD THAT AROUND!!"
Have you ever shared what your last words were to James
"I-I... don't think I have, wh- ...Wh-what.... were my last words??" Peppy mutters, not at all recalling what he said. Why can't he remember? He remembers the good times he had with James, the bad times, and the times after he would be grieving for his old friend. But the very last words he said to James... why can't he remember?
....That would have to entail reliving that moment he realized James is gone.
'James? James? Come in, James. Jimmy? Jimmy?.... James??'
Was he already gone then? No, that can't be it. There was no response. No guarantee James even heard any of that. So what was the actual last thing Peppy said that got him an actual response from James?
It was something to the likes of him responding to something to a command from James. Something to the effect of....
"You take the left. I'll take the right." "Roger!"
They were trying to escape. Peppy thought they'd make it. He was sure of it. Then Peppy remembered he was out of Venom's atmosphere, back into the cold of space.
Alone.
"....No. I have not," Peppy says with a tremble.
Hey Peppy this is an odd question, but what did you think of James' voice? Because personally, from what I've heard, it was basically a voice that had the potential to comfortably lull you to sleep. Like, he'd just be talking and I'd just konk out.(I'm going based off of A Fox in space's voice for James).
"It's definitely recognizable. I would say it's rather gentle and soothing, yeah. Especially when he spoke to his family. His inflection's different when speaking to me, but I see it. I do miss hearing it..."
