A flaw in his perfect record - -
Damn it.
He probably shouldn’t have struck that thug so hard, especially not as carelessly as he did.
A nightly stroll home from Sector oo3 turned disastrous pretty quickly. An older man, possibly flat-broke and desperate for spare change, had stopped him. He managed to keep a distance, yet he unknowingly backed himself into a dead-end alleyway. The man wanted at least a little change, but spare cash wasn’t anything Barnaby had.
He was stuck, cornered and caught completely off-guard by the the rampant stranger. The snow obscured his vision, clothing and hair matted down by melted frost, the rookie slipping about out of desperation. Bare hands against a handgun wasn’t much of a fair fight, he thought. Still, he’s not about to throw in the towel here.
Here’s the part where he curses instinct.
The familiar blue aura surrounded him, the rookie caught in the “fight” half of the “fight or flight” response. Despite the slippery landscape, he charged forward, uncaring for his current situation, if he would get cut in response. Truth be told, he might’ve gotten a stab or something without realizing it. The adrenaline was too strong. He couldn’t control it very well, not like Kotetsu can.
Perhaps he pushed too hard. The shoulder-first tackle came to a halt, Barnaby nearly slipping on the wet ground. The assailant, however, wasn’t as fortunate. He staggered into the street, trying to steady himself out.
Too late.
The flurry was thick enough for any vehicle to have trouble seeing through. There came a deafening screech, one Barnaby wouldn’t be forgetting any time soon.A heavy -thud- sounded somewhere along the line, perhaps a frantic voice shouting “Are you alright!?” as well.
His heart’s pounding against his chest now. The guy could be dead, for all he knew. The rookie stood, a deer caught in headlights in the middle of a snowstorm. All it took were the sound of sirens and ambulance wails to get the rookie the initiative to sprint away from the scene.
With a little less than four minutes left in his Hundred Power, he’s a blue beacon in a white storm.
Snow was about the only thing that made her feel at home, white flurries everywhere in the storm that had slowly invaded the city. The fall was heavy, a lot thicker than what most should be out in -- there was always a disastrous fault lurking somewhere in the blinding weather, similar to her own personality in times like this.
Something like this was all she needed in order to help those who needed it.
An accident had occurred, the ice queen not hesitating to place her outfit on (despite having qualms with it, no need for fanservice in this city like back at home) and rush to the scene. And, much like old times, it seemed that Barnaby had made it there first only to... run away?
Hands rested on her pathetic squirt guns in the holsters, a strange expression appearing. " You've gotta be kidding, right? "
Arms aimed backwards, a blue glow engulfing her body as a burst of ice shot like rockets and propelled her up into the air. Residual streams of the cold substance was left, the girl allowing her powers to shape and form under her and give her better footing as she made her way after the streak in the sky, playing thoughts through her head as to where he could be going.
Stopping her powers now until she caught up wasn't an option, however, meaning she would have wasted one of her two available uses.
And, like a following a fallen star that was lucky enough to reach the ground, she had found the man that she had began pursuing. With a flick of her rest, the ice arched down and collided with the ground, her frame sliding down and feet landing firmly onto the ground of pure white.
" Barnaby! " Hands instantly went to her hips, the young hero approaching with a few strides before halting. " What're you doing, the accident is back there! I'm not completely filled in, but you shouldn't be running away like that unless you were chasing after the culprit.
What's your deal? "
Unfortunately she hadn't a clue that the culprit was already before her.

Shou was still having a difficult time processing the happenings of this day, and it wasn’t a delightful process. It was actually giving him a migraine. This place was like an abyss, all he needed to do was the crazy Minotaur to put the cherry on top of it all.
He tried freeing his mind by watching people pass him by— as if he were invisible. They were holding bags of gifts and they were all in Christmas Spirit. How could they be merry in a place like this? They’re experiments. How could they be content with that? How could they be merry with that? Did they even know they were experiments? Oh, here comes the headache again.
Shou heard a bit of a sour tone in the woman’s voice. Looking up at her, he realized her stature was sour, too. He sighed “Well, when you’re dropped into an alternate dimensions by crazy-ass scientists, you don’t really know what to do or think.” he sighed “If you were dropped into a city you didn’t know, full of crazy scientists, and you couldn’t decipher who was crazy and who was not— would you want to risk asking some potentially crazy stranger for help?” he shot back, not pleased with her aura.
But, he caught himself being foul and stood up to bow. He leaned over, his fedora to his chest, his body at a 90 degree angle. “Sorry for being sour, it’s just weird for me, you know? Ah, I probably sound deranged for saying what I just did.” he laughed, nervously. “Sorry..”
Whoever this guy was, he didn't rub her the right way in the slightest.
Maybe she was the first one to initiate the unwanted aura, but it was the least she was doing to help him out. Understanding his point was easy to come by, however, the girl knowing just how he felt when it came down to it. The only reason she had gotten help was the people approaching her, not the other way around in terms of asking for what she could get.
" I haven't met anybody crazy yet, so there isn't much to worry about. You'd think if they were crazy they'd just go after you right away, anyway. "
Or that was how she saw it after dealing with Jake Martinez. They weren't all that docile in terms of getting what they wanted, holding an entire city hostage like they had. Even the guy who had the courage to sneak in and wear her Blue Rose outfit was out there, but she didn't have any idea on who this guy might possibly knew.
With a sigh, she opened her mouth to speak again until she saw his bow, a confused look appearing on her face.
" Huh? " Expression eased, body relaxing a bit more as her arm fell to her side. " You don't have to say sorry, you know. You have a good point, it's just that sitting there wouldn't bring the right attention to you if there was some crazy person wandering around. "
A shake of her head, the girl trying to figure a way to help him without making him feel anymore uncomfortable in this place. He was right, being pulled here meant he wasn't sure what to do. Jeeze, everyone was so tense when they first arrived! Not that she wasn't, but it'd be easier to help them if they weren't nervous like this.
Pausing, she tried her best to give her most welcoming face. " You don't sound deranged, either. You're just pulling the whole survival thing the best you can, aren't you?
My name is Karina Lyle, by the way. I can help you if you need me to. "

Harsh Reality
Ankh remained quiet for a while as he took short sips from his drink, feeling the tension dissipating from his body with every passing moment. The girl’s desperate attempt to save herself from embarrassment was pretty obvious, but he didn’t comment rudely on it, since there would have been no point. He wasn’t there to cause trouble, he just wanted to drink some of those feelings away.
“Someone staring is the very least of my worries.” he eventually said, supporting his head on his hand and looking straight at her, a finger going across the edge of his glass. “Shame.” the word came out of nowhere, possibly catching the other blonde off-guard. “You look like you’re pretty good at it.” his words were a bit forced, as he would have much rather liked to say something along the lines of ‘why the hell did you stop playing if you like what you’re doing?’. Although his eyes betrayed that intention to speak, Ankh didn’t add anything else. He couldn’t help but get the feeling that there was another reason for her sudden stop, but he didn’t question it further.
“You’re right, I’m not the type to get so drunk I won’t remember who I am in the morning.” he sighed deeply. “This place… it’s sucking the life out of me.” His words drifted out into nothingness as the kaijin took another long sip of his drink, his body tensing as he felt that horribly bitter aroma pouring down his throat. The only thing he truly desired at that moment was to leave, and yet, he couldn’t. The feeling was obviously shared by the young blonde sitting next to him, drinking her water quietly without trying to catch too much attention.
“… You should go play.” Ankh said out of the blue, pressing down on the edge of his glass, eyes pinned to the girl’s expression. “There’s at least one person in this place willing to listen.”
Ankh didn’t mention that he would have done anything to drown out the loud arguments going on around them with the serene sound of that large instrument.
So they were on the same boat, the place being the one to hinder both of them in some way. As much as she wanted to play the victim, to say she had it worse because of her age and leaving her family... she really didn't know what he was forced to leave behind. Instead, she kept quiet, deciding it was better to not toss the ball of who had it worse back and forth. There was no reason, everyone being stuck here whether they had something or nothing they were torn from.
" That's what happens when you're kidnapped, right? You aren't supposed to feel like yourself... it's degrading, even, to know that someone has the upper hand on you like that.
Who knows, those scientists could actually be stealing what little there is of us. "
Now that was something she hadn't a clue about, not knowing how many scientists there were or what type of technology they had. Assuming they could pull others from universes without a problem, well... it was a bit scary on what they could be doing. Kill you when you don't meet their standards, mess with your powers even more, it was like dealing with a wannabe God.
Her thoughts didn't get any further than that, however, eyes glancing over in slight surprise. Whatever the reason he wanted to listen for, it was her duty as a singer to allow him to hear it. Kotetsu had been told the same thing way back when, how she wanted people to hear singing because it was what she loved.
" I guess if someone wants to hear it, it's worth singing in this place. " That was as honest as it was going to get when it came down to it. Maybe singing and knowing someone was paying attention would lift her spirits, something she could only wish.
Pushing the seat back, she began her way back to the piano, a few eyes glancing to her from the drunkards sitting at the floor tables with lifted bottles to their mouths. It was only a moment before they went back to their drunken ramblings, ignoring her as she sat and placed her fingers lightly on the white keys.
Eyes flicked over to the other, taking a deep breath before pressing the keys and beginning the song she left off on. And, without hesitation, her voice rose above the strings of the piano to match with lyrics in hopes it would catch other listeners by some chance.
Hopefully this was what the man was looking for, too.
♕ no surprise. [lightning&karina]
She needed a place to unwind, somewhere to let out all the tension she had accumulated. Thankfully, she had passed by a gym earlier in the day and remembered its location. She returned to the gym, where it was…almost vacant. Sapphire eyes laid on one woman, sitting with her collection of…
Christmas items?
Ah, she had almost forgotten. It was about to be Christmas… She wondered if Serah had already done the Christmas shopping. Serah loved to go out and buy items and practical things to give out during the holidays. She was the type of person to be brimming with holiday cheer around the season. Lightning, however, wasn’t really phased by the idea of Christmas. No, she enjoyed the time off. Why? It gave her more of an opportunity to bond with Serah. Beforehand, Serah had to force her to take the holiday off, but not this time. She would make sure to visit her sister for the holidays.
After taking off her overcoat and pauldron, she began mandatory stretches before her workout. Not many people came here, and the blonde seemed too lost in her own thoughts to pay Lightning any attention. She wasn’t sure of the woman would eventually notice her, but she hoped not. She probably had a story to tell.
Echos resonated inside the room as impacts were made against the punching bag. At least the workout supplies were quality. Quick and light breaths escaped from her lips upon impact. She hadn’t worked like this in a while. It was rather relaxing. A throbbing pain still lingered from her past wounds, the one left by Gold Saw’s hands and the other from her own hands. Serah and Snow couldn’t see her this way. She didn’t care for the opinions of any others.
Strange how the gym had been so empty until that moment.
It wasn't until the resonate echoes from the punching bag that she realized she had company, brown hues lifting to stare at the woman. Whatever it was she felt about her, it was a bit comforting. Not that the actual person was, like hell she would feel that attachment when just seeing someone working out! No, it was the fact that the gym wasn't empty anymore, that it had a form of life other than her.
Keeping silent, she settled for watching the girl have at the bag she was previously using. Digits released the gift into the gift bag once more, letting herself enjoy the sound of silence with only the bag talking among the two.
Until her eyes caught sight of something on the girl's side, hands pushing herself up into a standing position.
" Don't you think you should be resting with an injury like that? "
Not that it was her place, of course, but she knew pushing yourself wasn't all that great on your body in the long run. This lesson had been learned from the other heroes, however, the girl speaking having always run out of the way to avoid a confrontation during her hero work.
That didn't stop her from telling this girl it'd be better to rest, of course. " Pushing yourself isn't going to get you anywhere, it'll just make it worse. "
♕ no surprise.
Manners were not lost on Jade. He was perfectly aware of unspoken social rules; such as the idea of leaving someone to their thoughts, especially if they express them aloud to themselves for clarification. Rather, he simply chose to ignore these said rules. Normally this was out of the desire to tease others, an act generally for the sake of his own amusement…
So why would this time be any different?
“My my my….there is no need to look so somber, young lady. It does not suit your features.” The Colonel spoke up, making his presence known quite suddenly propped up against one of the vending machines stationed at the perimeter of the room. While Jade had no need to hydrate, neither did he seem the least bit prepared for something like a work out, adorned in a winter coat and scarf as he was. After all, the chill outside was miserable enough…to consider adding the prospect of lifting weights on top of that…no no, Jade was considerably fond of his current physique. Regardless of being ‘underweight’ and ‘frail’.
“There is little joy left to reap from this world for an old man like me…so it would bring me great pleasure to see you smile.” The sincerity was questionable, as ever with Jade. But this was perhaps…the most genuine he had been in a while. And, while his initial intention had been different, by the time he took a seat on the bench posed with the bag of presents between them…he felt a little differently.
“You have the look about you of one consumed by thoughts that ail you, dear girl. I hope you do not mind my intrusiveness all too terribly.”
If it wren't for the sudden voice of the man, the thoughts running through her head would have kept her quite subdued in that room. However, there was no chance for something like that, the ice queen's head lifting and staring at the man who had somehow appeared as if he had been there all along. Jeeze, it was like there wasn't any way to have some form of privacy around this city!
... or perhaps it was her choice of spots that weren't the greatest for such desires. Whatever the case, she wasn't all that pleased with whatever he was saying, an obvious sign with just the expression on her face.
" Huh? Why should it matter to you if I smile or not; we're complete strangers. "
By the time she had even finished the man found a seat next to her, brown optics glancing over at him with the purpose to analyze him a bit more. Somehow she doubted he was here for the purpose of the gym. Why was he even here to begin with? Someone like this guy didn't seem fit for that, though first impressions were never the best.
Eyes closed as she placed her hands on the bench, grip tightening on the padded seat as she let him talk once more. As if anything she could say would really stop him, right? An intruder to someone's personal life always kept going if they could help it, Kotetsu being a prime example on terms of Barnaby's birthday that one year.
A scoff sounded at his words, one leg swinging over the other to sit in a crossed fashion. " You're acting like I shouldn't be. It's almost Christmas and I'm stuck here in this stupid city. How else should someone take that when they were kidnapped?
I'm not going to just accept this when I shouldn't even be here! "
Shou looked helplessly at the door that ever-so-cruelly taunted him. It was screaming open me, open me. But, it was also injecting fear into his weakened heart. What could be laying beyond this mysterious door? Danger? Adventure?
The young looking boy reached out and pushed the door open, and a rush of noise filled his ears. This… place was his new home? He wasn’t used to the big city, for his sc- previous school was in a small countryside at the outskirts of Hokkaido. Not the big city, like this one. He shuddered, for this place scared, fascinated, and allured him. His whir of emotions and overpowering curiosity was pounding at his already hurting head. Questions reigned supreme over his subconscious— then reality hit him when his heart started to beat faster, and faster, causing a painful tightening in his chest. He bent over, and gasped for air, trying to calm himself down. He cursed at himself for allowing himself to over-react to this situation. But, hell, how could he not be utterly freaked out by this sudden news. I mean, wouldn’t others freak out when they’re informed of such desperate news? Like, being a experiment and being transported to another fucking universe? That’s some pretty substantial news for one to take in, in such a short period of time.
As the oxygen started flowing, and his heartbeat eventually eased up. Straightening himself up, and gaining his composure, Shou then started walking aimlessly. “Oh, wait.” he remembered the piece of paper in his hands, and he took a quick glance at it. “Apartment H-4? Wh-What is that?” he mused, as he fumbled around with his stylish fedora. Shou surveyed the area, only to see big buildings and people everywhere. No signs pointing anywhere— no maps… well, from what he could see. How could he find his way around? What was he even supposed to do for this.. experiment? All he was given was a toy bow and arrows and a piece of useless paper. Shou sighed heavily and slumped against a nearby wall. This was crazy. So damn crazy.
Managing to find your way around this place would take one hell of a lesson, that's what the girl learned as she made her way through the sector. Already she had some kind of experience with maneuvering to where she had to go, needing to find the studio with the jobs she picked up the moment she was able to. Thankfully, that was her way of getting to know the place.
Others, like the boy she was about to happen upon... well, they weren't as lucky.
Fortunately she had been out shopping for a final present for a few more people, already placing her back to being as broke as when she first arrived. Hand ran through blonde locks, brown optics glancing from side to side to see the passing people. This city was so boring, hardly catching her interests in the slightest.
It was then that her eyes fell on the slumped figure on the wall, stopping her strides to muse to herself. There was no way this guy was from this specific city, right? Actually, his expression and actions seemed a bit like her own when she first arrived... damn, these scientists just didn't know when to stop, did they?!
... and as much as the ice queen would prefer to keep walking, it was the bump she got from a few strangers that brought her back to remembering she wouldn't have gotten far without a little help. Besides, it would be helping someone in the long run.
A sigh, walking over to the boy and placing a hand on her hip. " You're new here, right? Jeeze, you look pathetic slumped over like that... it's not that hard to ask for help if you need it, you know. "

Fists pounded against the padded bag, a squeak or two sounding after every few sways she caused it. Being at the gym was a bit relaxing, being able to release any frustration she might have gained from the adjusting days to living in this city. The familiar towel she constantly used hung over her shoulders, blonde locks resting over it to hide it from anyone approaching behind.
A few more punches sounded, the noise faded as arms fell to her sides. " ... stop thinking about it, it's not gonna be the same. "
Words echoed the hollow room, her being the only one inside from what she was aware. Obviously people here didn't work out like she thought they would, the empty room making her feel distant and nostalgic. For how long she'd already been here, it felt like it was only yesterday that she had been talking with Nathan and the others left behind in Sternbild.
Sighing, hands wrapped around the towel to wipe away the gross product of working out. The bench wasn't too far as she made her way over, sitting down tot he bag of items she had purchased earlier for presents she'd try to wrap later. Thankfully she had enough money to get a few cheaper things for everyone she needed; it was the thought that counted besides the price, right? An item lifted from the bag, staring at it with an eased expression.
A gift for her parents... she wasn't going to not buy them something.
" I'll just have to give it to them late this year, huh? "
Giving a small frown, the girl leaned over to peek in on the other gifts, making sure each were safe while she had been training her body. At least she had some people to give gifts to. That was much better than being completely alone.
♕ can't go back. [wocky&karina]
“Yeah, really.”
Wocky raised an eyebrow as he looked back at Karina. Was she really so surprised by what he thought? Or maybe she didn’t believe him? It wasn’t that he agreed with her simply to shut her up – no, he really did agree with her. Although, Wocky could understand what it was like to have people agree with you just to please you. It happened too often around his household, and sure at the time it felt great, but later on when he realized they didn’t take him seriously it…well it sucked. He just hoped she’d take him seriously.
. ” You’re right, there isn’t! I mean… I know it’ll hurt, but it’s better than being something you’re not, right? Besides, I’d rather someone just tell me how it is if they can help it!
There’s no reason to hold back; I understand tolerating someone or something, but what’s the use if it’s just forced conversation all the time? “
Oh! So she…had taken him seriously…Well this was a welcome surprise. He grinned as he relaxed a bit, putting his hands into his pockets and tuning back to look at her. He thought the exact same thing, and most people hated him for it, so it was really refreshing to find someone who just agreed!
“Oh man, I totally agree wid y’all! Like why sugarcoat shit, dat’s jus’ gonna make people feel bad in th’end anyway, so y’all might as well tell ‘em like it is! Hurt ‘em now if it happens, but y’all can fix that, can’t ya? And yeah man, it ain’t no fun at all. S’just better t’be yourself right away, even if y’all gotta hurt a couple people. That way th’ones that stick ‘round are th’ones that really care ‘bout you, and ain’t pretendin’, y’know?”
Now that was potentially one of the smartest things Wocky had ever said in his life, but it was true. If you acted like yourself right off the bat, the people that stayed were the people that actually cared about you, despite everything you were. It had worked well for him so far, hadn’t it?
No, first expressions were not to be trusted, especially in his case, but he was thinking the same of Karina.
“He ‘elped y’all? How? How does y’all know ‘im, huh? But yeah, y’all is totally right. I ain’t ever really met a hero before, unless y’all count a lawyer as a hero, but when I met Kotetsu an’ Barnaby I was really…I dunno, impressed? More by Kotetsu though! He’s so goddamn cool an’ slick, I ain’t ever seen ‘im be a klutz, what is y’all talkin’ about? I think Kotetsu is jus’ a bunch a good moments, really I wish I could be jus’ like ‘im!”
Somehow her smile slowly grew, hearing his response like that. From how he stated it, it made her feel like he understood her in a way. Back home she only had her two friends at school, the only two she really needed. Nathan and the others were friends, too, she supposed... but did that really count when they were rivals and had to go against each other in a battle for the points time after time?
Here was a different story, a place they didn't need all that hype for television.
" I guess, but even if it sucks to get hurt that doesn't mean you should care. Everyone is going to get hurt whether you do it or not, so hiding who you are isn't all that great in the first place, people don't understand that. It'd be a lot better if they could, but asking for something like that is too much from people who don't want to listen in the first place. "
How she changed from a pop idol to her own teenage self was completely different in her eyes, however. Keeping up a good image was a part of her job, something she had to smile for and make sure the fans were happy rather than shoved off by the true person she was in the shadows that the spotlight would cast from her.
As long as she was herself when she was simply Karina, that was all that truly mattered. Unfortunately for her, not too many stayed when they saw her.
... not like she'd ever tell anyone about it.
Eyes lifted once more at his words about Tiger, wondering what kind of trouble this guy had to get into in order for them to rescue him. " I guess, yeah. Even if he was just being a nosy, old man... he did help me a lot back then. I'd be fine whether he helped or not, anyway, but whatever, all that matters was he helped me when he could, so it's the least I can do to help others to some extent like he showed me. "
Telling him about how she truly knew them would reveal her status as a Hero, so she'd keep that on the down low for the time being.
A pause, a small huff to herself escaping gently. " What, you don't believe me? He's called the Crusher for Justice for a reason, you know! Sheesh, and you'd think with all the damage he's done back home he would have messed something up in this city by now. I mean, he gets the job done, but racking up all those fees for breaking something when there are other options isn't the way to go!
Even if Barnaby and I don't get along all the time, I'm happy he's his partner because he won't let him get out of hand. " More happy that Kotetsu wouldn't get in trouble, but the same difference applied. " Huh? Be like him?
... w - wouldn't it be better to just look up to him or something? Being just like him doesn't really prove anything about liking who he is! "
A little defensive, maybe... who wouldn't when someone was trying to mimic the person you liked, right?
Judging by the other’s reaction it obviously wasn’t a good thing to be in the apartment Himari was supposed to be. She didn’t really understand though how it could be bad in anyway. It was better like this than living on the street, right? At least these scientists were kind enough to give her an apartment in which she could live.
This was probably the only good thing she could see about this. She didn’t know why exactly this kind of social experiment existed and somehow she knew that she couldn’t leave it just like that, so she really hoped it would end soon. All she wanted was to go home or to better say to be together with her family. She already felt lonely, though she had just arrived, but mostly she worried about her brothers. It didn’t matter to her that much what happened with her, but thinking about what would happen to them was so much more important to her.
”..not the best place you say? May I ask why?” Himari asked her, after she stopped being far away with her thoughts, since she really started to be curious about why this was said about her apartment. Still, it.. couldn’t be that bad, right?
Better than not being chosen at all at least. Nothing can be worse than being left unchosen and just to disappear.
“And if you don’t mind it.. I-i don’t want to be a burden to you, but if you have enough time, I’d really appreciate it, if you could help me and show me the way!”
It also would be more than enough for her if she simply explained the way to her, but in all honesty Himari felt much more comfortable if the other would accompany her. She didn’t really like it to be alone and it was always more fun to things together with someone else.
“And I’m sorry I haven’t even told you my name yet, right? My name is Himari.”
After all she wanted to help her, so Himari thought it really would be rude not to introduce herself now that she had even offered her to show her around.
" It's just... that a lot of gangs live there and it's dangerous, from what I've heard. "
How could she really explain it other than that? Considering she'd only arrived to this place herself, she hadn't the chance to explore or even see what others might be talking about. Word of mouth was the only thing she had going, knowing it would take her too far if she had to do something like navigate herself around at some point.
Hearing her accept her offer of showing her was a bit more of a relief. Being a Hero back home meant points and a source of income, but this place was different. There was no Hero business, no sponsors... whatever they did was out of the generosity they might give in terms of helping another. Wouldn't Tiger be proud of her to see she was doing this while knowing she wouldn't get any gain for herself out of it?
" No problem, then! Like I have much to do in this place when I don't want to be here in the first place, " she began, lips curling in the slightest smile. " That way you don't get lost even if you have directions. New places can be tricky like that. "
A small nod was given, brown eyes moving to look which way as she tried to figure out the easiest way. Lifting a hand to wave her over in one direction, she began to make her way in the direction that would get them to where they had to go while the other spoke again.
Turning to look at the younger girl at her apology, the expression remaining the same as before. " Himari, huh? Nice to meet you even in a place like this. My name is Karina Lyle. "
Arms swayed at her sides loosely, eyes returning to their destination ahead of her.
" You don't know too much about the city, I take it. "
Harsh Reality
The bartender came back shortly thereafter with both Ankh and the girl’s orders. He brought the glass closer to his lips, taking a quick sip of the alcohol. Ah, it had been too long since he’d been able to indulge in such treats. In his own universe, there was a flock of people around him at all times, taking away every little thing that could have eased his worries, for fear of harming the detective’s body. The bitter aroma was soothing in an odd manner, as a few moments passed in silence.
“It’s not polite to stare.” the Greeed eventually spoke up, looking towards the girl, catching her glance as well in the process.
The odd lighting of the bar cast eerie shadows on his face as the kaijin stirred the drink in his glass. The look in her eyes betrayed hints of sadness and disappointment. She was just like him, only with a much smaller desire to get booze in her system. All the better. It would have been a shame for a pretty little girl like her to end up in some weirdo’s house just because she wasn’t paying attention to how many shots she was having.
“Decided that working amongst drunkards isn’t the best thing for you, I take it.” he continued, nodding towards the piano then towards the large men who probably called the bar their second home. He hadn’t gotten the change to catch the girl playing anything, but glancing down at her fingers, he could tell she was pretty experiences. A shame, he could have used a different tune other than the loud obnoxious voices of some thug who thought he was better than another at downing down pints of beer.
He eventually turned back towards his drink. “What the hell is someone like you doing in a shitty place like this?” the Greeed muttered under his breath, not sure if he was questioning the girl, or himself.
It was almost a relief to get her drink, fingers wrapping around the glass and feeling a bit more at ease than before. Despite the lack of alcohol, a cold drink was well needed at this point, something that could easily relax her without a problem. Yet the sound of his voice only caused her to tense, a hint of pink flushing across her cheeks as she glanced back to her drink before allowing herself to take the first gulp or two to try and hide her embarrassment of being caught.
" You're in a bar, aren't you? Someone staring should be the least of your worries in terms of politeness, " she responded, voice low as she took another drink and kept her eyes from straying.
It was only when he gestured towards the piano did her eyes lift, glancing over as well as her expression eased. To her it was hard to explain, the bar not being the main reason as to her sudden stop in performing. Home was much more comforting... performing here was just a hollow feeling, knowing that there wouldn't be much reason to sing when it was just a city she'd find a way out of when she could.
A drop of condensation slipped down the glass, curving along her index as she set the glass down. " Not that it matters if it's the best or not. I don't see a reason to perform if they won't even listen to me sing... I could easily be having others who are more willing listen. "
Eyes glanced to the side, brow quirking gently at the words she had caught from him.
" Huh? Isn't that something you should be asking yourself before asking anyone else? You don't seem like the type to come in and get slammed on alcohol just because of a random bad day that happened to appear in your week, if you ask me. "
♕ can't go back. [hiver&karina]
It was odd that the longer this conversation went on — the more and more confused, if not extremely curious — did Hiver get! He wanted to see Rome, wanted to see all these Romans! Granted, he had no idea that they weren’t stories like he was assuming. Perhaps that was their problem? The blatant mixed communication and the obvious mixed signals. All of which were a large lost cause on the boy of winter’s name.
Still, he appeared to remain optimistic about the whole situation. That and, he refused to leave the Mademoiselle alone until he obtained a roman. Of some sort — or well, maybe if he finally learned what Rome really was, then he would be satisfied. Hopefully this barrier between them could be rectified sooner rather than later, in fact, Hiver was about to take it upon himself to fix that!
“Excusez-moi, Mademoiselle Karina…money? Movie theater? Ah…I have no idea what you are speaking about. But…”
The bright eyed boy couldn’t help but be enthusiastic despite his confusion. As a result of this enthusiasm, the frigid to the touch boy soon took a hold of the girl’s arm, wrapping both of his coat encased arms around a single one of her’s. He began to simply tug her along, a wide and excited smile on his lips, an almost adventurous gleam in his eyes. Surely this was alright? —
“Mademoiselle Karina! I know! We can go and find romans together, oui? I would love to search for a roman with you!”
Perhaps he should have been clearer in what a roman, to Hiver, really was. With the mixed definitions in their minds, it sounded completely rational and logical to Hiver, but with what he had just said — Karina more than likely found Hiver to be the oddest individual to ever exist. Seeing as to her, he essentially just asked to search for a person, one who was not likely to be here in this day and age, instead of a story like the boy was really asking for.
Lips parted to speak up, about to question that he couldn't possibly be telling the truth at this point. Hadn't televisions and money been around for a while? Things like those had to be around while he was growing up wherever it was he lived, that was only logical! Besides, this guy didn't seem all that old despite the white hair, otherwise he seemed around her age.
... then again, Karina wasn't the best at guessing ages nor did she have any idea that this place brought people from all different times.
However, she had been interrupted by the tugging of her arm after he wrapped his own around her own. Feet stumbled slightly, the girl instantly drawing back and moving to try and take her arm back from the younger man's grasp. Didn't he know that was rude regardless of how well someone might know each other?
Brows furrowed, the blonde diva not all that happy with the situation. " Hey, I didn't say I wanted to find anything in the first place! "
A little snappy, maybe, but wouldn't you do the same? Having someone come up and talk about romans and finding them was already frustrating enough, the ice hero not understanding what he was getting at. Hands were placed on her hips, body leaning forward as she continued speaking after that to make her point that she hadn't appreciated the gesture.
" Besides, it's rude to just grab a person like that! Don't you know any manners? Just because I told you where you could find what you're looking for doesn't mean you can drag me along without asking me first or whatever, that's not how it works!
For someone as old as you, it should be common knowledge. "
Hopefully the poor guy wouldn't take those words too much to heart.
