hello!! sorry it took me a while to get to this ask 🥲 i have a lot of thoughts to like compile. so. oh my god. fakenut. where do i even start.

i guess just like my gumakeria post, ill talk a bit about fakenut's music. it's essentially taylor swift, hozier, mitski, sleep token, and suki waterhouse. the neighbourhood (chip chrome and the monotones) and lizzy mcalpine (over the ocean call HELLO?). my um PINNACLE fakenut song is wildest dreams by taylor swift. no notes. theres just a certain type of longing and pain that comes with this ship. probably bc theyve been through like 8 divorces.

and the history. so much of fakenut is history!! okay, so boom lets go to 2017. but actually 2016. rox fricking lost to skt in in the semis of worlds (which skt proceeded to win) then peanut jOINS SKT, the team that eliminated his team from worlds and then. commence fakenut bc wtf oh my god they were so in love. faker was so obvious. so was peanut. it fucking kills me. SPRING!! MSI!! and then. oh worlds 2017 XDD HAHAHA

THE SELF SABOTAGE. THE HISTORY. HELLO PEANUT RAN AWAY TO CHINA?????? the difficulty of maintaining a relationship in the esports scene?? theyre pitted against each other in games, and its sort of a cycle of "if i lose to you will you think less of me / will i not be worthy of your love" but also "he beat me so i couldn't win so i cant be happy about that either." its hard to be happy when they beat you, or when they win and you didn't. its never going to be perfectly happy. there are small cracks. theyre a cycle of losing and trying again and getting back together and falling apart, not in a particularly soap opera way but in a tragic way! because they want to be together so desperately but its hard, and it fails so many times, but they will always keep trying.

their dynamic too bc!! back then they were so obviously in love and then they went thru divorce arc and then back together and atp its just so much mutual pining too. but also like... fakenut r just mom and dad. they are!! they just have this magnetic pull to each other. binary stars in the universe that always come together. yeah, fun fact according to wikipedia "some binary stars orbit each other so closely that they share the same atmosphere, giving the system a peanut shape." COINCIDENCe??????? I THINK NOT BITCH. the clock stays ticking but fakenut will always be the same. i dont really have any particular motifs i use for fakenut honestly, but theyre very starry and celestial. theyre just enduring and pragmatic and its so ?? ridiculous sometimes?? how do they keep doing this. how do they end up everywhere. idk. theyre history filled and ridiculous and theyre gonna keep thriving.

Hello......can I ask something from Haikyuu? What do you think are Kageyama and Hinatas’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic? Sorry if you've answered these questions before.....

ohhh this is such a good question!! luckily i have extensive feelings about Kageyama and Hinata so this is a breeze

Kageyama:

strengths:

he can read the room: he’s shown an ability to grasp a situation very quickly, and he has a pretty good sense of what to do in certain situations

he knows how to bring out everyone’s strengths: Kageyama is a person who brings out the best in everyone in a unique way, that way being that he’s so confident in his abilities that it makes others want to try harder

he knows how to be polite (although he isn’t always good at it): despite his harsh personality, Kageyama is actually very polite to his upperclassmen and in general with people who he doesn’t know very well. in fact, he’s one of the most polite first years on the time

weaknesses:

he’s too talented for his own good: Kageyama has the Gifted Kid syndrome so many of us are familiar with, which has caused him nothing but grief. he knows he has talent and rather than trying to adjust himself to the pace of others as Oikawa does, he instead wants them to match him, which is impossible for most people to do

he isn’t good at socializing: in a word, the boy is awkward. although he’s pretty polite, if he had been a more sociable person and made friends in middle school, i think it would’ve helped him with his superiority complex and made it easier for him to get along with others in high school—like Hinata, who had a strong support system throughout school

volleyball is what he cares about the most: this doesn’t help with his superiority complex AT ALL. in fact, the reason he’s so incapable of getting along with people who he views as less talented is because volleyball means so much to him and he wants to win. this undoubtedly hindered his early relationships and is a contributing factor to his antisocialness

Hinata:

strengths:

he’s incredibly determined: this is obvious from the start, and one thing that’s essential to Hinata’s character development is that he always bounces back from a failure

he can always cheer up and inspire others: this is self-explanatory, and seen throughout the series. he’s pretty much unshakably other than a few instances of low moods (but he’s a teenager so this is unsurprising)

he can get along with everyone: Hinata can make friends no matter what, as we have seen countless times. members from other teams love him, and Hinata himself is very much a people person. manga readers will know this to be true especially well because of how easily Hinata interacts with and makes friends with people abroad, even back when he didn’t speak the language very well

weaknesses:

he’s not very sensitive: to put it simply, Hinata has no tact. he doesn’t know what’s better to keep to himself, as seen numerous times. moreover, he isn’t very formal with people who are older (the opposite of Kageyama) and he’s honestly kinda obnoxious sometimes

his goals are somewhat unrealistic: despite what anyone says, genetics do matter in volleyball. someone taller or someone with longer arms will always have an advantage, and that’s the inherent truth of sports: there’s always someone better than you. i wouldn’t necessarily say that Hinata doesn’t know this, but rather that he chooses to ignore it. it works out for him in the end, but in real life, determination doesn’t get you everything as it does for Hinata

he doesn’t always know how to listen: this goes hand-in-hand with his lack of sensitivity. he often doesn’t seem to actually listen to what people say, and he’s somewhat selfish through the first few seasons. he wants to improve his own playing and isn’t very good at letting others tell him how to do that at first. he improved on this, of course, but it’s still worth bringing up

and what i love most about their dynamic is that Hinata has always been looking for someone to match his pace, just like Kageyama has. he always had to find unique ways to practice and he worked so hard to put a team together in middle school, and then continued to strive to become better at volleyball. Kageyama, although he’s a lot more naturally talented, did the same. he handled it a little differently since he isn’t a very friendly person by nature like Hinata is, but their ideals align very well. they both felt excited to find someone who could keep up with them, and they actually built a really incredible bond because of their clashing personalities. i think Hinata’s cheerfulness and optimism actually improved Kageyama’s flaws more than anything else could, and he always stood by Kageyama despite some of his domineering personality traits

Failing, I mean, *learning* how to typeset - 1

Even though I initially applied for CLDR, I have decided to take up typesetting too. There are many things I have learnt in my short time with this hobby, and I wanted to write them down as a sort of progress record.

It's a roller coaster of a learning journey that goes like: excited/motivated to TS->stumble on a painful part->suffer/do a bunch of TS iterations->finally ask for help->get amazing advice.

However, the spark that comes from learning a new technique or solution to problems and applying them to the current issue (and the possibility of future ones) is worth the suffering. It's as if a path that I have never considered suddenly appears and it opens so many possibilities. This feeling and, of course, being able to release the project as best as I can for love of its content.

I'm grateful to my scanlation group, Jujugang!! because they're a bunch of cool, friendly, open members!! They're such a treasure ;-; soo wholesome T_T

Typesetting certainly is a different skill than CLDR, even though both require creativity and a sense of design, I feel like both do it in a different way. CLDR is like the makeup used to mask imperfections, while TS is the makeup used to enhance beauty. I like both of them (or maybe it's because when I get burnout from one, I wanna jump to the other LOL).

What I'm going to write here is from the perspective of a beginner typesetter so probably some of the things may not be suitable to follow. Many times I've found that I said something wrong and then corrected myself entries later OTL

The way I began to learn was from reading a bunch of guides from the Scanlator School discord and also the occasional TS discussions from other students with questions.

Well den with my shaky level of knowledge it was time to apply it to something and its first victim was a JJK doujin (I'm sorry, Jihaku). I translated it from English to Spanish beforehand which has its perks as a TS because when the TL does not fit, I can reword it (and boy was it annoying due to its use of vertical boxes). Another plus of this was that I could look at the English version to base my TS from it.

Since I finished it like a month or two ago, the pain of most of my struggles faded away (unfortunately?) so I may not be able to recall most of what I went through.

One of the most time-consuming tasks was obtaining the right fonts. Fonts are like a palette of colours and there are infinite variations which you may or may not decide to keep as is or modify. Choosing the right fonts for a project is important. If the genre is horror, I would choose fonts that are a bit unstable. If they're romance, I would go for rounder ones (or maybe just don't care and get the fonts that are best suited for mangas, because these dang bo-).

Even though JJK is a shounen series with no romance. I think that using a shoujo font for the djs also works because... they're romance now lolol ofc if the plot of the doujinshi is hurt/comfort or angst, it could change. The art style is also very important to take into consideration! The font choice should match the tone of what the doujinshi wants to convey as well as its art. Ngl using CC Meanwhile is quite tempting...

So there I was, scouting through a bunch of font sheets looking for those that fit an SFX, and this maybe took half the time of my actual typesetting... this is probably normal (I HOPE?!) because as a beginner I have no fonts, but as I work on more TS projects, I guess the time spent will lower.

That is with the exception of when I pick up more and more fonts... it's like going on a shopping spree to fill up a closet. Only that you don't have to pay for most of them (cough). So I went... on a font spree and downloaded waaay too many fonts... which makes the choosing process hard. Like: huh, the SFX "turn" looks better with this font or this other font?

Choice paralysis by being overwhelmed with so many choices and thinking: maybe there is the perfect typeface for this but I haven't found it yet (this is being masochistic, probably best not to think that).

Getting fontbase was great. It's a program that lets me activate/deactivate fonts as I need them (because PS loading up so many fonts will cause it to crash whoo). The free version lets me organize fonts by category but I'm unsure about which ones I should make. For now, it's like this and I don't think it's very helpful LOL it could certainly be better. I'm too lazy to update the NSFW one and add new categories.. for now xd

The paid version lets you add tags to fonts which I find pretty helpful.

There's a way to preview how the text will look like too and nice UX additions.

So what does a font addict do when they have an enabler? Download even mooore fonts. It's fun at first because later on, it becomes a pain to organize;; That said, the result is worth it because if I need a specific type of font for an SFX I can just go to a category, type the word and scroll through the options that have already been sifted through.

Last night I downloaded 117 fonts... it's addicting... but I still haven't finished organizing my previous batch...

hi!!! i’m a huge fan of your analysis posts and it really really offers me more insight into such a complex piece of media like bsd. i was wondering if i could hear your thoughts on dazai and chuuya’s relationship? there’s so much to it that i can never really wrap my head around it- especially with the new info that stormbringer has given us. i was also wondering how you might compare dazai’s relationship with chuuya vs his relationship with oda. obviously they’re very different but they’re both people that he was drawn to bc of their “humanity,” and people who knew him very well. thank you!:)

HELLO thank you so much for reading my stuff!!! And so sorry to have taken so long to get to this question. I haven’t yet had the chance to read Stormbringer (obsessed with the mainline manga here, but I take my sweet-ass tiiiiiime with the light novels, it’s just not a type of literature I consume on the regular) and I just know I’ll still be a while.

But dangit, we can sure talk about Dazai’s relationship with Chuuya (+contrast to Odasaku)! So let’s do that, while I get to the new novel lmao.

There’s certainly a lot to that iteration of soukoku, and the concept of “humanity” is closely involved. It seems to be Chuuya’s humanity that fascinated (and annoyed) Dazai from the start, after all, and it’s a factor that continuously determines things in their relationship.

In general, they’ve got their shared themes through which they can view each other, the search for a home and a sense of meaning that ailed them both at first (not for long in Chuuya’s case, but persistently, seemingly forever on, in Dazai’s). They’ve got their complimentary natures and skills that made them work well as a pair. They’ve got Dazai’s dumb possessiveness over Chuuya and Chuuya’s silent attachment to Dazai. Normally this would/should warrant them getting along some more - it’s a fact that they do care for each other a whole lot too - yet then they’ve got not only their contrasting personalities, but also the deeply-rooted oppositions in their moral alignment and level of humanity, and that’s where things get tense and screwy, I think. Humanity is a large part of the mess.

It’s just that thing, where Dazai is the one going to the side of good and Chuuya the one staying on the side of bad, but still, Dazai is the one without limits while Chuuya is all about his own principles. I mentioned it before on this reply to an ask about them, but the way both act (Chuuya having an inclination to care and empathy even though he’s a destructive force, Dazai not having natural empathy or principles when he should) is a motive for frustration towards one another. It already was in the past and it’s all the more post-Dazai’s leave.

So, in that sense, even though Dazai might feel some type of longing, curiosity, admiration or whoknowswhat for that side of Chuuya (his emotions aren’t something we know much about, so it’s anyone’s guess; all I can tell you is that he sees it, because he pokes at it), it’s not something he’s willing to touch upon more closely. You’re very right to say it seems to draw him in. Still, Chuuya doesn’t seem to be someone he wants to take that from, be it for the factors of frustration I said above, or cause it’d be more vulnerability than he wants to have around his partner/”dog”. If any growth or learning is done there, it’s only in the way two stubborn rocks can erode each other if they’re rubbing together long enough.

But he is willing to take it from Oda lmao. He’s not cagey, taunting and an overall dick about the humanity he sees/admires in Oda, that’s the main difference. There’s no frustration or denial there.

Oda, like Chuuya, has emotions Dazai lacks: natural empathy, care, an inclination to kindness. But these are accompanied with a wish to go to the side of good and to cut back on evil actions. It’s an example Dazai can look at and see less contradiction in, something more digestible and understandable that can be taken after as guidance. Indeed, it seems humanity draws Dazai to people, but where Chuuya’s case gets confusing, complex and frustrating, Oda’s is one he can look at with just curiosity and a positive opinion, ultimately as a push for his own change of career.

That’s the thing, as far as I think! Dazai’s a moral mess with an admiring eye for what he lacks. And I may be harsh on pointing out his shortcomings in that sense, but he’s learning, from repetition and reasoning out and imitation, and he’s influenced in one way or another by mere exposition too. Can a moral sense be grown? Let’s see you get it, Dazai.

You see, this is the thing that puzzles me about the whole Hange gender debate issue, where in most cases, the last thing that's been said on the subject will be brought up as the conclusion to the topic, here, it seems to be perpetually stuck in some earlier version of what Isayama said as proof of what Hange's gender is or isn't.

Amassing all my material, the timeline as I see it starts with this question (of which the main version that's being bandied about wasn't translated correctly) that he answers in his blog post in 30 March 2011 (I'm pretty much copypasting from my gender references post) :

一つ疑問に思ったのですが、調査兵団のハンジ・ゾエさんの性別はどちらですか？（女性だと思うのですが、まれに「男性」という意見も見かけます）宜しければ答えていただけるとありがたいです。（時間があればでいいです）

5 August 2013 for the "You are free to see Hange as any gender/nongender you like" message that I believe as the source of the up for interpretation arguments even while the message refers to Hange as her (and "Zoë to be her given name"), and then

13 January 2014 that the confirmation that "Isayama has confirmed that… we’re not allowed to confirm Hange’s gender."

The Hibiki no Sato event report collation, which link you have sent to me, was held on 1 November 2014 (also how Mike got his birthday XDD).

And then, in 24 June 2015, we have Isayama's blog post that if Hange had something like a character song it would be this "Jibun-Rashiku" (Like Myself) image. I may have said it before.

(The song is about being like oneself because they cannot be/live like a man or like a woman, and contains the line "Although I am 'boku', I am also 'atashi'")

And from the “Gekkan Shingeki no Kyojin Official Figure Collection Vol. 8 Hange Zoe” article, Kodansha, 6th November 2015, a very brief excerpt:

I’m not completely sure how to translate the second half but I think it’s something like

Tentatively the intention is female but the feeling/impression that you cannot rule out seeing (them) as male either

Arranged chronologically, I think one can see the progression of his thoughts on the matter. And as far as I'm concerned, he has answered the question: Hange's gender is unknown, ambiguous, whatever you want to take it, it's a free for all. I know it's a bit mind-boggling that the answer is to many, not an answer at all but, as I like to quote this part from the above article:

Hanji is, he(she)-like, a little other-worldly, I wanted to draw (them) with the sense of freedom of not being caught/trapped in a framework. That, I think suits the character that is Hanji as well.

which I think makes it easier to understand where he is coming from.

drop pop candy's unrequited love

At first, I wasn't planning on making a post about it buuut I missed some things I wrote on my wiki comment, and I want it on my blog for easier reference.

I was going through my list of fic ideas for inspiration, and I came across a line from drop pop candy that I wanted to use, so I listened to the song again to interpret the lyrics, and build a plot and themes from it.

I was surprised when I found out that drop pop candy is about unrequited love. Even if the song did sound bittersweet at first, the lyrics on a surface weren’t too sad.

The interpretation is based on the english translation by Dropkick Subs from the MV.

The start is depressing. Someone not caring about getting themselves or their things wet, and it also mentions monotony/replaying of a normal occurrence.

But what made me realize was the chorus:

I just wanna break away and run to tomorrow

Since you're stuck in yesterday, if another sunrise never came,

It's okay, it's all okay with me

I'll just keep moving on, always going forward

I will love you more and more...

...everyday with you!

I may fall seven times, but I will keep on moving

I keep on thinking of you, together with me today

What I understood from it was that someone wants to change their life. They mention someone else that is stuck in the past (or in another phase in life) and if they never move on from it, they (the singer) are ok with it. They will still love them, even if it hurts (not having their feelings reciprocated), they will keep going forward with the memory of the other person in their present.

Bruh.

It also has another line saying:

All these lies woven from kindness -> what the singer might have mistook as romantic affection from the person they like)

Or the truth, tainted with bitterness -> that maybe they should've known it didn't meant that the person liked them

Furthermore:

I want to run so fast that I can make it to space in just one jump

Even if I cannot go reach the stars and moon high above

It's okay, it's all okay with me

I saw it as the singer wants to experience something (love), but even if they can't reach their goal (of requitted love), they are ok with it.

Welp, the way I see that song, it's about someone that comes to the realization that their unrequited love won't be returned (who knows if it will or not?). Despite how much it hurts them (falling seven times), they want to make a change in their life about it. Hence all the lines about wanting to move forward (in contrast to the “run-of-the-mill everyday life” line at the beginning, or awakening from a long dream). Even so, they will still keep their feelings to themselves, not immediately discarding their love to the other.

My writing is all messy LOL but anyway, this is probably the reason why the song sounded so sad to me despite it having a cheery tune. Yep, definitely using this for fic inspiration.

The entire scene was perfect.

Some are complaining that there was no blush, some that it was rushed. They might fix it on the Blu Ray. Who knows?

I feel that it captured the essence of the moment. Maybe the animators said: "You know what? They have been friends for a long time, the blushing is not necessary on this scene.

I feel satisfied with the delivery.

Our desires come second when we analyze and remember where and who they are.

Let's start with the obvious. Attack on Titan is NOT a romance anime.

They are in the middle of a war. They're acting like soldiers in a conflict doing the best they can.

But let's look at the scene; look at the ambience. It's soft... it's intimate. It's like the world around was protecting them so they could have peace at that moment.

Listen how Hange whispers Levi's name. They are so comfortable around each other and you can tell they have had conversations similar to this in the past. Maybe not as straightforward as this sequence, but they have known everything about each other for a long period so I think they're past the stage where they blush for things when feelings get raw.

Also, let's backtrack to Hange crying while murdering another comrade, made me think of the ending lyrics: "Even if I sacrifice everything, I will protect you."

Hange loved Levi so much that they went to the extension of killing someone in order to protect Ackerman.

Overall, I feel like a lot were transmitted with the way they looked at each other. Their gazes showed kindness, respect and love and you cannot put that in words. After all, the eyes are the windows of the soul.

Ppl who state this don’t understand Levi’s personality. I mean, he’s not an expressive guy and he can’t for the life of him sell nice honey-touched love verses nor sweet talk.

Hell, he didn’t know how to deal with Eren *back when he used to get imprisoned and all that, I recall that he ordered Petra to.. ‘do all the talk’ and soothe eren*; Let alone handle his own ROMANTIC life. Which’s a new big deal to him since he hasn’t been with a lover before.

They must be mindful of the fact that Levi never displayed any vulnerability in the series nor showed a meagre glance of longing to anyone.

When Erwin was about to die, Levi talked to him, kneeled before him and devoted his strength and has gotten enslaved to his power afterwards when he realised what Kenny’d meant.

The thing between Erwin and Levi was something between a soldier and his foremost commander AND it happened in the middle of a battle field. They weren’t alone, nothing was personal and all what were left there are sheer work and duty calls. Levi pushed Erwin to let go of his dreams, still feeling betrayed and didn’t get all soft with him despite the eminent respect he carried for Erwin’s judgments and visions. Erwin was a leader, his boss and his friend. And Levi looks up at Erwin as someone who’s higher than him, that he, himself can’t see what’s behind Erwin’s thoughts and motivations.

But in Hange’s case, they were by far, equal. Levi and Hange possesses what the other half lacked and they both knew each other quite a lot. Something that wasn’t pointed out about certain SHIPS.

And round Levi’s reaction, firstly,

they were in the middle of the forest, alone and in privacy were left, unlike Erwin’s scene and unlike many scenes. Levi displayed the feelings, he buried and hid from everyone.

Like let’s be honest, have you ever seen Levi stare so damn longingly and sadly at someone before with his gaze solely zoomed at? with his tone being so low, tired and hurt. Not to mention that they brought this scene when he exactly ASKED ‘ what will they get if they ran away?’ .

Why couldn’t he just say ‘No, we have a job to do.’ Simply. Why didn’t he suggest the answer roughly as he always do?

It’s because he’s reluctant. And because he’s unsure? Like it’s more of asking himself rather than Hange, it’s like he’s considering the option and weighing the outcomes by uttering it out loud.

‘ what will running away bring him? Bring them? Happiness or regret?’
