Sirius looked at the train anxiously, then back up at his parents. Little Regulus was still holding onto mum’s hand, looking a little sad that he couldn’t go to Hogwarts too.
“Well maybe I can just wait till next year,” Sirius proposed anxiously, getting lost and disoriented in the sea of other students. Everyone seemed to be going where they were supposed to go- knowing exactly what they were doing. Sirius felt so out of place.
“Don’t be ridiculous.” His mother said flatly. “You’ll go to school just like every other wizard your age and you will be good. So help me, Sirius Orion if I get a call…” She frowned down at her son, noting the messy mop of curls that she hadn’t gotten her hands on to buzz short.
Sirius glanced back at the train, his gut turning as he dreaded leaving his mum and little brother.
“Well, go on. Get with your class.” His mother nodded to the lineup of first years that were being rounded up. Sirius’ face wrinkled with anxiety, watching the children run to get into line.
“Be good. We’ll see you at Christmas.” She said, patting him towards the train before walking away.
Sirius felt lost but he slowly made his way into the line, looking at all the eager faces around him. It wasn’t long before a boy beside him struck up a conversation, settling the doubt and dread in his tummy.
Maybe this wasn’t so bad after all?
He was just starting to feel comfortable when they were ushered into several large compartments at the back of the train. He hadn’t changed into his robes yet and instead was just wearing a red sweater and black trousers.
“You see the newest issue of Wizkid yet?” He asked the other boy excitedly, pulling it from his pocket. Nanny had shrunken it down for him so he could take it on the train.
“Did you see when he killed Dark Magma?! Oh that was wicked! Whats your favourite sweet? I got loads of sickles. Wow look, he’s got Newt Scamander on his-” Sirius pointed to another boy’s frog card. His thoughts were speeding too fast for him to keep up. The scenery was changing rapidly around them, matching the growing excitement in the compartment.
He decided he was going to like Hogwarts. He’d already made a friend!
Part of the anxiety that had been keeping him up for half the summer, was the prospect of mingling with the other students. Sirius had spent years longing for a friend- when all he had around him were just stupid girl cousins and an annoying little brother- that he was terrified he wouldn’t make any. No one would want to hang out with him. He’d be alone, that one weirdo kid that all the other kids-
Sirius jumped up from his seat, his eyes lighting up. The compartment door had opened to reveal a tall blonde, looking effortless handsome in a way Sirius envied. He wished he had groovy hair and cool poses like that.
“Hiya Luicus!” Sirius’ beamed with a mixture of pride and admiration. He waved at the older boy dorkily like a kid brother. Lucius had come to see him. Sirius decided that he LOVED Hogwarts.
“You know him?” A boy asked, glancing between Sirius and the upper year. Sirius nodded with a grin and hurried to collect his things.
“Well I’ll be seein’ya,” he waved to the others and trotted off to follow his friend proudly.
“So where we goin’ Lucius?” He asked curiously, eagerly looking around them as they walked up the aisle. He had to walk quite fast to keep up, clumsily dodging other students, and the carts, and notes that were flying in the air from compartment to compartment. Lucius seemed to be able to do all that without much effort but Sirius had always been a bit clumsy anyways. He tripped over something- a broom handle- and landed on his knees.
He was quick to scramble back to his feet though, laughing it off easily. He was too excited about where they were headed. Sirius had stuffed all his sweets into his pockets like a kid, liquorice wands hanging out. He didn’t feel like a dorky little kid, especially now that he was with Lucius, though to others he probably looked like it.
“You think we’re almost at the castle? What does it look like? Is it true they got an ogre, because one of the blokes back there said they did, but i told him, I said Lucius woulda told me if there was a real live ogre in the castle. They’d keep ‘em in the dungeons now, wouldn’t they? But you can’t keep an ogre in the Slytherin common room!” He rambled on at rapid speed, practically bouncing with excitement and preparing to hang on every word Lucius said.
He’d heard all the mythologies about the castle from all his older cousins, that now that he thought about it, he knew a lot about Hogwarts already. It wasn’t going to be scary at all!
It never occurred to him to slow his stride. He’d hit his growth spurt during the summer and put on a few inches (which he was loving because now everyone was looking up at him). He was so accustomed to walking faster to keep up with everyone else that he’d yet to realize that he was now walking too fast for people to keep up with him in a casual way. “Second train car. Best one to be in. First one is too close to the engine so it’s noisy. Second car is perfect because the noise is muffled and that car is the smoothest ride.” He explained easily. If someone else had asked him, he would have been irritated that they couldn’t’ figure it out, but Sirius was different. With Sirius it was his duty as a big brother (assumed or not) to make sure the younger man understood the finer qualities of life and why he should seek them out (or expect them as was their birthright in his opinion).
He slowed faintly when Sirius tripped, glancing down at the younger man with a fond expression. How well he remembered being just as excited—only he’d been on his own initially. He thought of Ramsey and Septimus and wished (as he had so many times since they’d graduated) that he’d been closer to their age (or that they’d been closer to his) so that they could still hang out together. He’d seen them during the summer, and of course he’d see them during the holidays, but it wasn’t even close to the same, and while he’d had others try to fill their spot in his little circle of friends, they were substitutes at best. That was alright though, because he had no doubt Sirius would prove himself to his group despite his age. Sirius was the Black heir just like he was the Malfoy heir. They were meant to be best friends, of that he was certain.
“You think we’re almost at the castle?”
Lucius chuckled at the lightning speed questions being flung at him and shook his head. “Takes a few hours to get there pup. As to the ogre—myth. It’s the sea monster in the lake you gotta watch out for.” He ducked down and added, “Especially when the girls are sun bathing.” He waggled his brows, flashing a grin before he pushed into the second car.
“Hey Lucius, took your time gettin’ up here mate. Whut were you on abou—” The question drifted off mid-sentence as the occupants got a look at the figure just behind him. Carrigan’s nose crinkled. “Is that a bloody first year Luc?”
Lucius smiled, stepping to the side so he could throw an arm around Sirius’ shoulder and drag him forward. “Not just any first year Carri. This is Sirius Black.” Lucius worked hard to hone his reputation. By the end of his first year, he’d already made a name for himself, and he hadn’t stopped, nor did he plan to. Lucius liked being the center of attention. He liked the way people watch him, and he didn’t imagine the envy or jealousy. He knew they wanted to be him and to have what he had, and he loved knowing that.
“Well…” Serena, a dark-haired 5th year decked in Slytherin rolled forward onto her hip to study Sirius. “He is kinda’ cute.” She mused before beckoning. “Why don’t you come sit with me sweet?”
Lucius rolled his eyes and steered Sirius toward the large booth and table that he preferred. “Trust me pup, you’re not ready for her particular bite yet.” He said, sharing a knowing grin and laugh with the other boys lounging around the table.
