She looks like she’s considering cracking a joke, maybe throwing in some flirtatious banter-- her usual go-tos for these sorts of questions. But then-- no, the Warden-Commander has earned some measure of seriousness from her, when it’s asked for.

“The same things that keep all Wardens awake, I expect. Not so much nightmares-- yours have stopped  by now, I hope? They usually do, by now, but I have heard of them persisting... I lie awake, staring at the ceiling, thinking of all the times I have made choices and they have turned out poorly. Could I have taken this route, gotten somewhere quicker, and saved this innocent? If I had been cleverer with my words, could I have persuaded someone to make a different choice? If I had, would things have turned out differently? It is a burden of those with important duties to make monumental mistakes, and such is our lot in life, I am afraid.”

📖 The Inquisition; - for Lia

It seems very... distant.

By the time the Inquisition rolls around, Lia’s world has already been in chaos for years. Kirkwall is a mess, still struggling to recover from the chaos that was the Annulment of their circle. Lia sees the Breach in the distance, hears about the Inquisition being formed, even has to deal with rifts and demons, and honestly?

It’s not that different from the shit she’s been dealing with her whole life.

Swap out ‘abominations’ for ‘demons’ and it’s really not too much of a change from the situation she grew up with.

Logically, she knows it’s much bigger than all that. Maybe the so-called herald is a heretic! Maybe they have been sent by the Maker! She hears a lot of worrying rumors, but Lia has a hard time conceptualizing it. She has a lot of problems she is physically dealing with right now. How can she worry about whether or not some stranger with a magic hand is divine or not?

Now, once Tresspasser rolls around and Varric becomes the Viscount of Kirkwall, things change. Lia is 100% on-board with the Inquisition at that point, because oh thank the Maker things are actually starting to get fixed around here! Also, Varric is viscount! She liked Varric! Yay!

🔵 The Templars, for Gaelle

When Gaelle looks at Templars, she sees more similarities to the Wardens than she would like to.

Both organizations are, for the most part, made up of good people trying to make the world better, and failing with a disappointing frequency. How many Wardens has Gaelle heard of who decided that the end justified the means, and it backfired horribly?

To Gaelle, Templars fill a necessary role-- magic and demons are dangerous, and there need to be people trained to protect others from that, just as Wardens are necessary to protect people from Darkspawn. And neither organization has a perfect track record when it comes to judging what actions are and are not “necessary.”

🔱 Spirits and the Fade, for Innes

Mainly, Innes... doesn’t get it.

As a non-mage with no particular interest in the subject, Innes knows very little about spirits and the Fade. She dreams, yeah, but she’s never really experienced the Fade like a mage might. As for spirits... They basically sound like demons, to her. “Like demons, but nice” is the best way she can really understand it.

It kind of weirds her out, to be honest.

Lia:

“I climbed to the top of the Vhenadahl. We’re not supposed to, of course, but that just makes it even more of a challenge. Some children act as lookouts to make sure no adults are coming, while the climbers try to make it to the top before they can get caught. I made it all the way to the top, looked out over the city– out of the Alienage, over the rooftops and the sea– and it felt like I could see the whole world… And, uh, then I fell and broke my arm in three places, but that’s neither here nor there.”

Innes:

“I was… Oh, a tiny little sprat at the time. Couldn’t have been much older than six or seven, if that. And my mother’s having the newest member of the family, like she always seemed to be doing, and I’m pouting in the hallway because all I can think about is how this just means someone else I’m going to have to share all my toys with. And my father, he’s nervous, like he always is during these sorts of things, and he says to me, ‘Innes, we’re getting nothing done sitting about and fretting like this. D’you want to go riding?’ And he takes me down to the stables and sets me on a real horse– I’d only ever ridden ponies at that point– and he leads us out into the woods, and we just spend the whole day out there. I’m sure we didn’t go as far out as I thought we did, but for a while, it just felt like that was all there was. Just is and the trees, no responsibilities or little siblings to trouble us…”

Luka:

“I’m sitting in my mother’s lap, and we’re in the back a wagon, and there’s this biiiig cloud over on the horizon. And I look at it and say, ‘momma, it’s a dragon! It’s gonna eat us!’ And my ma just starts playing along, and we take turns making things up about the dragon– I think we decided on it being pink, with six horns, and it breathed purple fire, or something like that. And it was gonna try and eat us, but we were gonna feed it… something? The driver, I think. And then the dragon was gonna be our friend. This was figured out over a five-hour wagon ride, I oughta mention. It was fun.”

Gaelle:

“I remember watching my mother getting ready– I must have been very tiny, if my mother was there. I’m afraid it’s a dull memory– I am just sitting on the bed, watching her brush her hair, but it’s such a peaceful memory, and so clear. I can still smell her perfume, recall the exact tone of her voice as she spoke to me… She was, to me, the most beautiful woman in the world.”

Headcanon: Elren

It’s not that Elren isn’t proud of Lia. He is. He’d be proud of Lia no matter what she did. He saw how hard she worked to learn swordplay, and he seen how hard she worked to join the guard. His daughter has grown into a strong, independent woman who fights tooth and nail every day to make things better for her people. Of course he’s proud of that.

He just worries that she won’t be happy with this life. It alienates Lia from her people, and she has to deal with humans being jerks to her all day. Humans she works with, who she’s protecting. Elren has no doubt that as admirable as his daughter’s ambitions are, she would be happier working within the Alienage, among her own people.

And he has made this opinion known to Lia. Several times. Sometimes with a raised voice, which she has responded to in kind.

Lia knows that her father just wants what’s best for her, and that they will never agree on what they consider ‘best.’ Lia loves her father, and knows that she’s loved in return.

It doesn’t make their fights any easier, or any less frequent.

“Heh, believe it or not, I wanted to be a guard long before I became the Champion. Good ‘ol Captain Aveline pretty much shut me and any other Hawke out the business, but maybe that’s a good thing!” Marian puffs her chest out and grins. “The answer’s simple—motivation! Or something like that, anyways. What you fight for, that sort of thing!”

“Oh, Maker!” Lia’s nose crinkles in a laugh. “The poor Captain has too many headaches as-is!”

Her smiles softens at the Champion’s explanation. “My father would call that ‘stubbornness.’ Not knowing when to quit. But hey, being stubborn got an elf in the city guard, so that’s... something, right?”

“I have been simply walking the city guardswoman, acquainting myself with Kirkwalls sights and amenities, as most who travel would, I would think to do. And what lovely sights they’ve been too,” Matias gave her a quick once over, ending with an amused wink, “Such as that very nice statue near the docks, the Champion of Kirkwall is it not?”

With the destruction of the old chantry, the Champion’s statue, and the chains at the Gallows were just about all there was left as far as ‘sight-seeing’ went in Kirkwall these days.

“Unless that is a crime of course…” He raised an eyebrow at the woman, a mixture of amused and challenging. “Should I have gone to the Viscount’s office to receive and escort to lead me about the city?” The smile widened a little, “I can say that I might not have objected, depending on who they assigned to me…”

Unaffected by her sputtering it seemed, he went right on with his flirting. It didn’t hurt him after all. Not yet anyway.. though to judge by the woman’s red cheeks, that might not be far off. But the risk was part of the fun.

So, either no alibi, which could potentially bode well, or he simply wasn’t taking her seriously. Or both. Probably both.

Embarrassment faded back into simple, manageable annoyance. She could do without the flirting, but-- manageable. Easily ignored.

She needed to go back into the alleyway, check it over for any signs that someone could have been hiding within. It had been treated as an escape route, not a refuge.

“How long do you intend to stay in the city, Serah Matias? And where might the guard reach you if we have further questions?”

Oh! Marian catches how red-faced Lia becomes and how quickly, and can’t help to feel equal parts endearment and amusement. The poor thing. “I mean, you made it to the guard before I did, and that’s a position I’ve been vying for years,” she says jokingly, and nudges Lia in the shoulder. “Besides! You’re brave and good, and I’d say that’s two-thirds the recipe to herodom, don’t you think?”

“Woulda-- woulda figured your goals were a little loftier than ‘city guard.’“ The elf murmurs with a smile, her head ducking sheepishly.

Joking aside, it’s obvious that the Champion’s praise means the world to the woman. “I’m-- just doing my best, is all. What’s the last third..?”
