@matthewrparker: Very flattering love!
"Psychic." she repeated, nodding sincerely. She wasn't sure why this was the part of Hazel June's character witness he'd chosen to cling onto, but she was happy to roll with it. She suddenly realised she wanted Matty to know her little girl, all her little eccentricities and odd behaviours. "She wanders around our flat sometimes looking for cold spots, and talking to ghosts, and she does this thing where her eyes roll all the way back in her head, but I think that's mostly just to freak me out."
She heard herself titter nervously, knowing she was rambling but emboldened slightly by his laugh. He had a really nice laugh, after all. Even when he was holding back the full force of it.
"Really? Are you sure?" she asked, voice wavering. Her shoulders slumped as relief flooded her entire body. Or was it something like hope?
In the few moments he'd been out of her line of sight, Chess had made a bargain with herself. If Matty didn't want to see her anymore, she could learn to live without him. Chess had a good life, warm and fulfilling. She had the best friends in the world, and the greatest support system for her daughter. She could let Matty sever ties, til time stretched out between them and they were nothing but strangers. It would hurt like hell. Her heart might even break, and she would most certainly cry. She could learn to move on. She just didn't want to.
Because to not have Matty in her world in any capacity didn't bear thinking about. To never hear him call her honey again, to never be able to let him know Hazel? It was utterly unthinkable. Why would she ever want to live without this sweet man in her life? Now that she'd held him so close, how could she ever let him go?
She swallowed hard, thinking Matty was giving her a lot more grace than she perhaps deserved. Her intentions had been utterly, undeniably selfish.
"You did! You do." she breathed, her chest aching at the idea that Matty might think he was nothing to her. "I lied because it all meant too much."
"I was scared. I've never..." she gestured to Matty in his entirety, her hand waving over his body in mid-air. "I've never liked someone the way I like you. And I wanted to be a different person. I wanted to be someone spontaneous, and sexy."
She felt tears prick at her eyes, but she wouldn't cry.
"I didn't know how I fit into your world, how we would fit into your world. And the lie wasn't purposeful at first, and then I got deeper and deeper in it, and..." she sniffed. "I wanted to keep you. I wanted to stay in the dream a little bit longer."
Chess pressed her index fingers under her eyes, as though she could stop the flow of tears, the smearing of her mascara.
"I did a really awful, manipulative thing." she admitted. "I was insecure, and I let it get the better of me."
Matty wanted to cling to the hurt that had burrowed in the pit of his stomach. He didn’t like to be angry, didn’t like to let his mood dictate the way he treated others, but he thought he was at least entitled to feel the sting of the lies Chess had told. Regardless of intention, she’d deceived him and for quite some time now. But as she stood there, inviting him into their lives with little nuggets about her daughter, he couldn’t help but smile. Fondness bloomed in his chest for the woman he’d grown so attached to, and the sweet little girl who he’d met only today but who had trusted him enough to keep her safe.
“And you’re quite positive she’s yours and not Joey’s?” Matthew teased, a soft laugh spilling from his lips. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t funny, given their current circumstances. He really shouldn’t be joking now about the legitimacy of her daughter, but it had felt like a natural, playful thing to say, if her fondness of ghosts and spooky happenings were any indication of the company she kept.
He blinked then, pausing as it slowly dawned on him. Of course. How could he have been so stupid? It wasn’t as though Chess had been hiding Hazel June from everybody. It was only Matty that had been left in the dark. Had everybody been laughing behind his back? Were they all gossiping about what a complete fool he must be, to not have noticed something so glaring? A wave of panic washed over him when he remembered how close Chess was to Annie and Jax, and he hopelessly wondered if they knew about Hazel June too. Did Elias?
He paled as he stood there, shoulders slump and posture terribly unflattering. He’d never book a single modelling gig again if he was caught slouching as he did now, glassy eyed and distant. Matty blinked, trying to follow her train of thoughts as he zoned back into the conversation at hand. He blew out a soft exhale as she desperately fought to explain herself, eyes filling with tears that she was failing to hold back. He felt a pang of guilt in his chest at having made her cry, and he offered her a weak smile, quietly wishing there was something that either of them could do or say to undo the mess they now found themselves in.
“You are sexy, Chess. Nothing could ever change my mind on that,” he whispered, forehead crinkling as he tried to reason with her. He supposed he was at blame too. If she’d trusted him enough, she would have never doubted his affections for her. He’d never intended for Chess to feel as though he wouldn’t completely cherish and worship her if he knew the truth. “Being a mother... I– Fuck. Chess, you brought a beautiful girl into this world, and you raised her. And she’s so completely, mind-bogglingly lovely.”
It was a rare thing for Matthew to be so confounded. For all intents and purposes, he was a confident fellow. He’d always had a reasonably good grasp on his emotions, just as he’d been comfortable and easy going in his sexuality from the very first day his lips had met Eli’s. Matty was deeply privileged to be so sure of himself and to feel no shame in it, but it seemed the same couldn’t be said for Chess.
Against his better judgement, he closed the gap between the two of them, lifting a hand to push hair back from her eyes, sweeping strands from her forehead as he cupped the back of her head. His thumb glided along her cheekbone, dark mascara sticking to the pad of his thumb as he tried to clear away the remnants of her tears.
“You have always fit into my world, darling. And I would have welcomed Hazel June too.”

Chess had never been on Matty's bad side before. She wasn't entirely sure he had one, to tell the truth. But she now found herself pressed up against the closest thing to a bad side he had. Which actually felt somewhat more like... intense disapproval. She half expected him to give her the old "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed." It hurt all over, like the time her little sister had gotten her to try acupuncture, a million tiny needles pricking her skin all at once.
"For lying to you." she said, her voice nearly a whisper. She forced herself to look Matty full in the face, the least she could do despite the fact she could feel herself burning in humiliation. "For putting you in that situation, for..."
What could she say? For months and months of incredible, unnecessarily secretive sex? For not letting you get to know me, even though you let me know so much of you? And yet, Matty was the first person she'd let get to know her, really get to know her, in the past seven years. She'd shared so much, let so many walls down, and it all meant nothing - because she'd been hiding away the best part of her, the person she was proudest of.
"I've done a horrible thing." she said, voice wobbling, trying to smooth over her features at his request. As her thumb brushed the pale skin of his wrist, she tried to remain firm and resolute, not some emotionally manipulative idiot he was probably going to curse out in a very detailed text thread with Elias later.
Biting the inside of her cheek, she took one clumsy step forward in her heels, intending to follow him to the back room so they could talk privately. Instead, she found herself rooted to the spot by the sight of his retreating figure, cradling her little girl so sweetly.
It was in those few seconds that Chess became acutely aware of her surroundings, like someone had turned the volume all the way up. She forced herself to stare ahead at the door Matty had disappeared through, waiting for the moment she'd see his face again, but she couldn't help but hear the whispers.
"Was that Francesca's kid?"
"Did you know she had a daughter?"
"Is she Matty's?"
"Don't be stupid, how could she be?"
She stood firm, pushing her cuticles back, an unflattering anxious tic until Matty returned. She took a few hurried steps to meet him, wrapping a hand around his wrist for the second time and dragging him into a dimly lit corner.
Safely concealed behind a rack of couture, Chess took a deep breath and nodded.
"I did. And I'm so, so sorry." she heard herself say, and finding she was still holding onto his wrist, let go abruptly.
"That little girl back there is Hazel June. She's seven years old. And I'm her Mum."
She forced herself to keep going before she lost her nerve, her eyes never straying from Matty's face.
"I know every Mum says this, but she's the best kid in the world. She's intuitive and never mean and honestly, a little psychic. Her Dad isn't in the picture, and... I've done her such a disservice by lying to you, because she's the best thing I've ever done."
She clasped her hands together to hide the fact they were shaking.
"I will answer any questions you have, and if you want me to never contact you again after this, I completely understand."
Both Matty and Chess knew she was in no position to be calling the shots or taking control. That being said, the moment he felt her hand wrap around his wrist, the model melted to her touch and let her drag him away. He didn’t bother resisting. He wanted to hear her out, even if he didn’t know if he’d like what she had to say. As they tucked themselves behind a line of clothing, it didn’t go amiss to the Brit that she hadn’t released her hold on him. He didn’t complain, nor did he draw any attention to it.
As soon as her apology came, he found himself immediately distracted by the sudden loss of her touch. His gaze travelled down to his naked wrist, before flitting back up to meet her eyes. He needed to get a grip and focus on what was important, but the truth was he really liked Chess. He’d had no reservations in making that clear to her either. Though Matty had been patient with the woman across from him, always wanting to move at her pace and never putting a label on whatever it was they were doing, he’d genuinely believed that they were veering ever closer to making things official. Being in your thirties and asking somebody if they’d like to be your girlfriend sounded a little juvenile to some, but the thought had flashed hot in Matthew’s mind on more than one occasion, and he’d been hoping to make it a reality soon.
And then along came little Hazel June, the sweetest girl he’d ever laid eyes on and the most shocking secret to boot.
“Psychic,” Matty found himself quietly echoing, his voice barely above a whisper. He huffed out a breathy laugh, giving his head an almost imperceptive but fond shake. He had enough nieces and nephews to know that Chess meant what she said – both on the psychic front and that she thought her daughter to be the best that there was. He also found that he believed her quite wholeheartedly.
But that didn’t change the fact that she’d lied, and that was the part he was still trying to wrap his head around.
It was true that Matty had a lot of questions, and he wouldn’t lie and say he wasn’t hurt by her deception. But he hadn’t missed the tremble in her hands, nor the way she’d fought to keep her voice from shaking too. His features softened as he shook his head, offering Chess a sympathetic smile.
“I don’t want you to never contact me again, honey. Don’t be silly,” he reassured her, keeping his tone light.
Even with the rack of clothes obscuring them from view, he knew that there were plenty of nosy blighters out there trying to get an earful of what was going on. His own frustrations at the situation aside, he didn’t want Chess’s dirty laundry being aired out to a room full of judgy models, nor did he think Hazel June deserved that sort of attention either.
“I understand wanting to protect her, Chess. I’m not angry about that. I actually think it’s incredibly sensible to not introduce strange men to your daughter right off the bat,” he noted, wanting to give her at least some benefit of the doubt. “But... Why lie? Why hide her from existence entirely? It’s been so long, and I... I thought I meant something to you.”
