THIS RIGHT HERE
You guys are dangerously close to realizing specifically what kinds of people they keep from voting and why.
I want to drill this into everybody’s head:
The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world
Black Americans and Latin people make up the majority of this population (many of whom are non-violent offenders)
Federal Prisons in America require that their state keeps their prisons at a maximum occupancy at all times.
The 13th amendment did not entirely abolish slavery…just one form of it. It remains legal through industrial prison system
Oh and we have privatized prisons which allow companies to actually make money off of keeping people incarcerated
Here’s what’s really perverse: prisoners, who cannot vote, still get counted in the U.S. Census. The more prisoners a county has, the more representation it gets, even though the prisoners cannot vote. See how that works? The more black and brown people they lock up, the more government resources and political representation they get. Even though those prisoners have no say and cannot vote.
If county-A has a population of 50 voters but no prisons, and county-B has a population of 50 voters and 50 prisoners, the county with the prisoners gets more government funding and more political represention. This is sometimes called “prison gerrymandering” and it is used in redistrictring.
Not so fun Fact: Southern states that reliably vote for Republicans also have the highest prison population in the United States. (source). So mass incarceration is a double whammy. It’s both a form of voter suppression and a tool to strengthen white people’s political power.
I’d also like to drop recommendations for The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness and Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II.
They both tackle the historical evolution of modern-day mass incarceration (e.g. slavery giving way to convict leasing giving way to the modern prison-industrial complex & for-profit prisons) and how it relates to voter disenfranchisement.
We provide the New Jim Crow as a free PDF under our social justice resources alongside several hundred other racial injustice and prison abolition resources here.

RODRIGO NO
So I’m currently enslaved employed by a cable company, and I can offer a few pointers:
Find a copy of the customer agreement online. Read it. Have the “big cats in boxes” YouTube video on standby so that you can renew your will to live periodically while reading it.
Focus on the sections about cancellation
Examine any terms regarding early termination fees, notice required, proration of the time between cancellation and the end of the billing period, and equipment return policies.
Send a letter requesting cancellation to your carrier via certified mail. Include the date you wish for it to be cancelled. If you are not the account holder but have power of attorney, or the account holder has died and you are managing their estate, send copies of the relevant documentation with the letter.
The day after, when it isn’t cancelled, call back. Ask for “retention” or “loyalty” and when asked why, state that you wish to cancel.
They’ll ask you why you want to cancel. Say “I don’t want to discuss it, I just want to cancel my service.” (note: there are times when it pays to disclose your reasons; my company will waive all early termination fees and penalties if the account holder is being entering military deployment or a nursing home. Check their policies.)
They’ll offer something nice. Bundles, discounts, free channels, etc. Say “as nice as that sounds, and as much as I appreciate the offer, I just need to cancel my service.”
When they deflect again, ask how to return any leased equipment. They’ll launch into another spiel about that, thankful that you aren’t making them process the cancellation. Write down the process – they’ll either tell you to bring the equipment to a local office, or they’ll state that they are sending recovery kits. If it’s the latter, ask for the address that the recovery kits return to and write it down (you want to use the recovery kit if you get one, since it’s prepaid, but if they aren’t sent you’ll want to be able to return the equipment yourself.)
After all of this has transpired, state “As I stated in the letter sent via certified mail on [date], I am ending our contractual relationship and terminating this subscription. Has my cancellation order been processed?”
If the cancellation order has not been processed, tell them to process it. Listen to their spiel. Ask for the date that it will be terminated.
Hang up, wait thirty minutes. Call back, ask if your account is pending cancellation or not. If not, ask to be transferred to retention and ask for a supervisor. Demand that your cancellation be processed and advise them that a complaint will be filed with the FCC if it is not.
If more than an hour has been spent on the phone, file a complaint at FCC.gov. Forcing a customer to continue a service outside of the terms stipulated by the contract is illegal and the FCC hates it.
This went from really funny to “holy fuck what kind of nightmare dystopia do we live in that we need to be educated on how to get a company to actually cancel an account with a company that bills you monthly” really fast.
really wish i had known about point 10 when i tried to cancel my service with verizon when i moved, b/c i got through calling them, they said it would be cancelled, i hung up, carried on with my life, moved houses
months later they said i had failed to pay my bills and they were sending my account to a collections agency because they hadn’t actually cancelled it when i called and had kept billing me even after i moved
You and me, however many times it takes.
(I sketched these saturday when i could hardly see and finished them now when i still cant see great so pls excuse mistakes BUt they are my world ;v;)

Are you sad that June is over and you don't have a pride month anymore? Fear not, friends! There's a different pride month just beginning! lgballt
[Image Description: An LGBallT ball of Gilbert Baker’s 8 stripe rainbow flag: “Hi friends! As pride month just ended, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about what July should be.”
A trans ball, a lesbian ball, and a bi ball come onto the picture. They are all motion-blurred and their eyes are closed and angry. Trans is holding a pitchfork, lesbian has a torch, and Bi has a sword. They yell “QUEER WRATH MONTH!!!” while the rainbow ball watches.
The rainbow ball says “Gotta say, I love the enthusiasm, but July already has something…”
The trans, lesbian, and bi balls open their eyes and the motion blur decreases. They look at the rainbow ball. Bi says “does that mean no more sword?” Rainbow says “Yes.” in big text. Bi says “awe damn…” in little text.
The rainbow ball turns into a ball with the disability pride flag. The disability pride flag is a black flag with five parallel zig-zagged stripes, one blue, one yellow, one white, one red, and one green, The disability ball says “July is Disability Pride Month!” with yellow stars around it.
Trans, lesbian, and bi look in awe. Lesbian has put the torch away and says “oooh!”, trans has lowered their pitchfork ad says “wow”, bi has lowered their sword and says “What flag is that?”
Disability ball says “I’m glad you asked! This is the disability pride flag! It was made by a disabled woman named Ann Migall after an ableist massacre in Japan in 2016. It was made in 2019.”
Disability ball continues: “In Migall’s words, the black is for mourning those who have faced Ableist violence, and for rebellion and protest. The zigzags represent how disabled people navigate barriers and are creative while doing so. They represent breaking free from authority and control.
“The different colors of the stripes are for different kinds of disabilities; mental illness, intellectual and developmental disability, invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, physical disabilities, and sensory disabilities. The stripes are parallel to show solidarity within the Disabled community.”
Trans and lesbian look on in awe and say “nice”. Bi looks at their sword. Bi says “that is very cool Disability, but I do now have a sword and a lot of rage so if there’s not a wrath month, what should I do?”
Disability says “Very good question, bi! Simple! Use that energy to be an ally to your Disabled friends! Did you know that Disabled people don’t have marriage equality in most parts of the world? Get mad about that! Disabled people make up an estimated 26% of the world’s population, we are the largest minority yet most public spaces are inaccessible! Most don’t even know about our pride month! (Not to mention the rampant ableism in the queer community…)”
The comic shifts back to trans, lesbian, and bi. They are motion-blurred again and their eyes are angry. They have raised their weapons once again. Trans says “No marriage rughts?! Here we go again!” Lesbian says “I’m angry again.” Bi yells “Disability Rights!”
