anyway, i haven’t been on here in a while, but i decided today while watching some youtube philosophy of post modernism (which mentions rick and morty, bojack horseman, eric andre, and other adult swim shows), and it took me a moment to realize that... once again, people leave family guy out.
so! as the good peter griffin hating samaritan i am, i decided to pick up the mantle once more to keep this shit going. because the issue with family guy is clearly not going away, no matter how much we attempt to ignore it or make fun of it.
other aforementioned media all shows the cynicism of post modernism. that’s a complicated phrase for a simple point- which is that basically a lot of us are sick of today’s shit. the economy sucks, college tuition sucks (for americans), the news sucks, politics suck, the state of job availability sucks; the people who were raised by all of this (1985s-2000s) are now getting to a point in their lives where they prefer to consume adult media that recognizes and portrays this suckiness in our lives. we like to acknowledge that things are kinda shitty, and find humor in the bleakness. it gives us validation in a weird social way i’m not quite sure how to explain.
but if that’s what those shows mean, then what do shows like family guy mean?
is it just a reminder of how our generations cling to the concept of nostalgia? is it that with the improvement of technology, we’re clinging to the concept of similarity in hopes that it means time isn’t passing as fervent as it always is? does it possess some innate quality that resonates with people enough to keep it relevant even after the characters grow stale and the writing changes hands?
honestly, yea. it’s probably a few generations (dragging in the 1970s-1980s folks too here) that watched it back when it was on- not out of seeking it out, but because it was so readily available and it was something kinda funny back in its time. which is true, if only because a bunch of us were worse people back in the day who hadn’t realized that laughing at minorities (even if we are part of that minority) for stereotypical traits isn’t actually funny or unique. like, if there’s one thing Those Dang 90′s Kids can be happy about, it’s that fact right there.
i mean, some of us are still terrible people. that’s a fact. it’s just a lesser portion because the 2010s sure haven’t been kind but it’s been a necessary awakening.
one that... family guy has been avoiding for what we can presume to be a number of reasons. example: you can’t suddenly just change the base formula of the show without losing a chunk of viewers, you can’t redact problematic parts of your show without calling more attention to the thing you’re attempting to fix (looking at you, simpsons), and... with a show like family guy, can you really fix the racism/homophobia/ableism/etc aspects of the show when those concepts are what got it on air? episode one featured a joke about hitler getting mad about jewish people (and presumably starting the holocaust) because of petty reasons (they could get more ladies wooing over them at the gym).
and why wouldn’t family guy want to stick around, when the current (american) political climate has shown there to be plenty of people who don’t want to be inclusive and politically correct. is that not why it’s thriving? because even in liberal communities, i keep finding that there are so many who don’t want things such as equal opportunity/affirmative action to take place because it means giving up their unfair advantage.
isn’t that something family guy itself would endorse?
maybe you can kind of see where this is going. where i’m opening up the road to many views on why this show might exist, but also wondering if perhaps one of the main reasons it just keeps on going is not because of cynicism towards the current Everything i mentioned before and how much it sucks.
maybe family guy is a cynicism towards the progressive communities who see how much everything sucks, and tells us that’s not a fucking excuse for being a shitbag. maybe it’s cynicism towards the concept that you can do better as a person, that stagnation isn’t acceptable.
and maybe that’s why i have a problem with it. people can do better, and i’d be so willing to help them if only they’d stop clinging to the griffin values long enough to see it.
