I once applied and interviewed at a bookstore cafe for a barista position. It was way closer to my home, and I had almost a decade of experience working in a coffee shop at that point. 

Got to the interview, and it turned out they didn’t want a barista, they wanted someone to spearhead their new cafe, as the cafe that had been in the store before didn’t want to resign their lease with the bookshop. They wanted to put their own cafe in its place, all new menus etc. They needed someone experienced to train their new staff, to handle window displays, to communicate with the bookstore owners about changes and needs of the cafe, to be able to handle inventory and ordering.

Okay, I had basically done most of that stuff at my previous job. I asked if cafe positions would also be required/trained to work the bookstore. They would. They would be required to run the book sale counter, stock and reshelf books, and help bookshop customers find things. They would also–despite having an outside cleaning company–have to help maintain bathroom cleanliness. They’d have to take out trash, and clean spills, and vacuum.  Wow, that’s a lot, I said. Is this a manager’s position, then?

No, I was told, it wasn’t, but there was a chance that after a training period it might become one. And that made me pause, because I’d been working as the front-of-house manager at my cafe, and I knew how much work that entailed, and what kind of money I was making, and it was only the commute that had me looking for a new job. So I asked what the job paid. $8. E I G H T  D O L L A R S. Per hour. Barely above minimum. For all of that work. For someone they expected to get an entirely new cafe up and running, and then also do the work of the bookstore and the cleaning company as well.  I thanked the woman for the interview, said I’d have to talk to my significant other about the impact a four dollar pay cut would have on our finances, and that I wasn’t sure it was the job for me. She asked me to sleep on it, and she’d call me the next day.  This is a job I was way more than qualified for. I had years of experience doing exactly the things they wanted. It was a convenient location, close to my home–I could walk there if I absolutely had to. I did not go home and talk about that four dollar pay cut and what it would do to our finances. I knew as soon as she told me that not only was it not feasible for us, it was downright insulting. That little money? For a frankly ridiculous list of responsibilities and expectations? She called back the next day. I thanked her again, and told her in no uncertain terms that my time was worth way more than what they were offering. And whenever people bitch about Millennials being lazy, not spending money, not buying houses…whatever the complaint of the month is…I think about the very nice lady who conducted this interview, and how confused she was that I didn’t want the job.

These people in detention have not committed a crime. - I don’t mean that in a moral or a figurative sense. I mean literally. It is NOT a crime to ask for asylum. - These people didn’t jump a fence, they didn’t sneak into the backyard. They are knocking on the front door and saying “People are trying to kill me in my home country, will you let me in?” - Now, I didn’t fall off the turnip truck. Some of these people are lying. That’s why you have a hearing. And because they might wander off, these people are held in detention until the hearing. - This hearing is NOT in a criminal court. It’s in an immigration court. Because these people have not committed a crime. - Immigration court is not like criminal court. You don’t have a right to an attorney. - So these people are waiting around, separated from their children, with no attorney, until they get a hearing. - In 2015, the median wait for an immigration hearing was 404 days. - Here’s where it gets even more twisted. If people plead guilty to asylum fraud, they get their kids back and get deported. - So these people knock on the front door, which is perfectly legal, and we take their kids, and tell them the quickest way to get the kids back is to confess to fraud. - If someone committed a crime (ie. shoplifting, armed robbery, murder) and you took their kids away to make them confess, that confession would be thrown out. - But these confessions are lawful, because this isn’t criminal court. - Because these people haven’t committed a crime. - Now some people think that if we make it so unpleasant for these people, they will stop trying to cross the border. - But the message this sends isn’t “Go Home.” The message it sends is “Sneak in.” - If they go home, they think they will be murdered. If they request asylum, they are separated from their children. - If they sneak in successfully, they’re safe. If they sneak in and get caught, they are no worse off than if they sought asylum legally. - And remember, these people haven’t committed a crime.

Amazon normally brings in over 34 BILLION dollars every day. The loss of even one day’s profits could mean massive leverage for the strikers – especially when the boycott coincides with what is usually one of Amazon’s busiest days of the year, their Prime deals day.

Reminder: Do not buy from Amazon or even open the website between 10-17 July 2018, in solidarity with the transnational strike.

Amazon workers in Spain have called for a transnational strike because Amazon has been avoiding accountability for its labour rights violations by merely shifting the work (and the human rights abuses Amazon inflicts on their workers) to non-striking countries, each time a strike occurs. If there is widespread striking transnationally, Amazon will have no choice but to recognize the strikers’ demands in order to keep their facilities functioning.

Our job as allies is to support the strike by avoiding using the Amazon website or purchasing anything from Amazon for as long as the strike continues. A mass boycott of the site, coinciding with the strike, will strengthen the workers’ bargaining position and could be crucial to Amazon workers gaining back basic rights in a variety of countries.

may I have some help please?

hi! as some of you may know, I’m multiply disabled and living in deep poverty - my total income is a little over half what a minimum wage job pays.

I do my best to skate by, paying rent before anything else, eating as cheaply as possible, rarely going places requiring bus fare (I have no car), spending almost nothing on entertainment or clothes, making things last until they are physically falling apart (and oh boy are things physically falling apart rn), rationing my meds until my pain impairs my functioning significantly, and rationing laundry as long as humanly bearable.

However, despite my best efforts being poor is a constant game of catch-up that it’s impossible to win, and I’m struggling right now. I could really use some help.

I admit I feel ashamed asking for help again. You’ve helped me out of some dire situations in the past and I’m forever grateful for that. I don’t want anyone to feel obligated.

So please ignore this post if you feel any reluctance or if you struggle with limited resources yourself. But if you’re an adult who has a little extra and you actually do want to help me scrape by, I have a paypal and a wishlist.

Over the past 6 years I’ve been in a very abusive relationship. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t stay anymore. My boyfriend has cut me off from most friends and family and I have no one to reach out for help. I don’t know what else to do. Last night was the last straw for me. He beat me and I can’t take it anymore but im afraid. He watches everything I do. I’ve made this tumblr to reach out for help. I don’t really work and I recently found out that I’m pregnant. I know if I can’t give my baby the life they deserve here and I need to leave now. I feel terrible asking for people to just give me money but I have no other option at this point. I just need enough to buy a plane ticket to go to a family member in Honduras. Please. I don’t know where to turn. I’m not good at anything so I have nothing to offer. The ticket is $938 and I just don’t have that. Everything is in my boyfriends name. Please. Anything helps. I need to leave as soon as I can. Someone before suggested I go to the police but I can’t. My visa has expired and because I don’t work or go to school anymore my bf said there would be no reason to renew it because we’re getting married.. that was 3 years ago. I’m undocumented and I’m afraid of something happens to me and my baby no one will come looking for us or care. Please. What’s the difference between socialism and communism

Communism refers to a theoretical next stage of human history, where society has been fully democratized and exploitative power relationships have been defanged because goods and services are equally accessible to everyone who needs them.

Socialism, according to state communist ideology (your Leninists and Maoists and all that), is the transitional phase between capitalism and communism, where the means of production are placed under democratic control in order to facilitate the deconstruction of class society and those exploitative power relationships; as Lenin said, “All will govern in their turn, and soon become accustomed to having no-one govern.”

So, I guess you could say that most anarchists are communist but not socialist, while most statecoms are both communist (in theory) and socialist (as a tool/strategy).  And this is what people mean when they say, “Well actually the People’s Republic of Such-And-Such was socialist it wasn’t communist”; having a “communist state” is like being a little bit pregnant.

When mainstream center-left politicians (like Bernie Sanders for instance) call themselves socialists, they’re being inaccurate.  They’d be more accurately called social democrats, or, pejoratively, welfare capitalists; they want to reform the existing order without changing its fundamental structures, thereby preserving everything that made the bad stuff possible in the first place.

they’re asking you to disclose if you’re transgender. legally, they can’t ask or consider someone’s gender in hiring someone, so they get around it by giving you the option of telling them yourself. if you “volunteer” the information, that’s legal.

its like when they try to figure out if you’re poor by asking if you have “reliable transportation,” hoping that ppl will explain that they dont have a car without actually being asked. things like that.

My managers have personally told people that anyone who puts anything like that outside of just “male or female” gets their application tossed immediately. Btw if an interviewer asks if you have reliable transportation, don’t say anything but “yes I do” that’s it!!!!! Don’t say another word don’t say you take the bus or walk or bike or get rides or uber don’t say anything!!!!! Just say yes and that is it they cannot require any sort of proof of transportation.

I just took a class where one of the things we had to go over was interviewing to hire. 

The entire process was super gross and made me feel scummy and unethical. SO!
