The current digital revolution allows artists to reach out to audiences like never before, yet it fuels the instant gratification and throw away culture that we are surrounded by today. What might have been on someone's playlist one week, becomes lost in the depths of their ever expanding mp3 collection the next. The aim of this blog is to showcase tracks from the underground that may have previously gone unnoticed, giving them a more permanent platform whilst building up a musical encyclopedia of the most forward thinking production today. The emphasis is on drum and bass, with splatterings of house and pretty much anything that contains a sweet piano riff thrown in for good measure. I will be posting just a couple of tracks a week in order not to dilute the content on here. Listen, enjoy, share and support. Disclaimer: I do not own any of the music or images on this blog. If you have issue with something that is posted, please get in touch.
One band I have always heard about but never listened to, Vessels came up on my Discover playlist on Spotify this week. Obvious comparisons can be drawn with instrumental kingpins, 65daysofstatic; a group that I loved a few years ago. This track is from their latest album Dilate.
My new favourite group post-Glastonbury. I am definitely not up to date with what’s current band-wise and so I was following my friends around most of the time during the day at Worthy Farm. I was lucky enough to catch The Staves up on the Park stage and was blown away by the ensuing hour of beautiful harmonies and perfect instrumental accompaniment. I love when the bass kicks in on this track, the pad arrangement making you want to do a little jig back and forth every time you hear it.
Nuyorican Soul - I am The Black Gold of The Sun [4 Hero Remix]
Every once in a while you come across a piece of music that moves you in such a way that all of the day’s worries suddenly fall by the wayside. I was on the bus home from work and this song came on that was part of a summer mix put together by Technimatic. I can only imagine what it would have done at the raves of the 90′s when it dropped. Everyone was probably having near religious experiences like I was on the 415 Routemaster yesterday. Needless to say I am going to be listening to this a lot on my own little pilgrimage to Glastonbury next week!
I was looking forward to George’s first LP and he has certainly not disappointed. The house heavyweight could be critised by some in scene for a pretty radio friendly album but after seeing him close Found Festival to a packed tent this weekend, it seems the discerning 4x4 club kids have lapped up his offering aplenty. About Time indeed.
Taking it back to the old school vibes with this one. Moresounds has been creating quite a stir in the underground with releases already on Doc Scott’s 31 Recordings and inclusion in Fact Magazine’s producers to watch in 2015 - I’m hooked!
Hands down my favourite tune off of the new EP from Xtrah’s recently incorporated label, Cyberfunk. Those distinctive Break pads and Xtrah’s more deep and experimental side combine perfectly here to create a tune that is bound to turn any dancefloor into quivering mess over the next couple of months. Looking forward to future releases.
Can’t believe this still hasn’t got a release. Such a disgusting drop. Spectrasoul have well a truly done the business with this. Fingers crossed for some news on it in 2015.
Having recently been given the VIP treatment, I couldn’t not put up the, in my opinion, far superior original. The club heads go nuts for this every time those organ keys come in. One of my favourites to double drop with.
Something a little bit different this week. I recently saw Whiplash, a movie about an aspiring musical jazz drummer and his battle to the top. I was blown away by the technical ability required for the genre (check out the 9 minute epic finale ‘Caravan’ from the soundtrack) and have since been on a quest to seek out similar sounding artists. Step up then GoGo Penguin; with pianist Chris Illingworth’s cinematic soundscapes, Nick Blackka’s sumptuous bass lines and the off-beat, glitchy drums of Rob Turner - these guys are going to be on my playlist for a long time coming.
Ahead of their live show in Brixton tonight, there could only really be one song worth blogging about this weekend. 'Swim' came out right around the end of my time at university - having got the finals out of the way, it was the soundtrack to my summer and to the month long party that ensued. The lazy days in the park and trips to the beach, the fry up breakfasts and late night kebabs, sailing down the Taf and the end of year ball. Everyone was on such a high and this song captures that feeling perfectly.
A absolute gem here from Floating Points. You could be forgiven for skipping this track if you were listening to the preview on Beatport but as a full body of work it builds up and up into one mother of a crescendo. The perfect accompaniment to the surroundings of Plastic People (RIP).
Fresh off the production line from the trio that is Stray, Sabre and Halogenix. These guys are so on point right now and their latest EP does not disappoint!
I love the simplicity of this tune. Kieran opened with it at a show he did at Brixton Academy last year. Tickets were £5 so there was literally no lighting or stage production apart from a table for the decks. With it being so dark, this track was the perfect choice, the keys echoing around the huge venue and everyone going nuts for each and every drum kick. Sick.
Released in 2005, Second Sun is still sounding as fresh as ever. S.P.Y. reminded me of this tune on his Radio 1 Essential Mix last month. I can't believe it's 10 years old - a sign of Calibre's undisputed legendary status if there ever was one.
