hey so I wanted to ask if you have some more inhibitor brain facts please? I need more pseudoscience for fanfics
This is such a cool ask, thanks anon!
BIG DISCLAIMER: Iām not even close to an expert and I donāt know nothing. I just really like the brain and I also like reading papers, so it might just be enough to bullshit my way through a fanfiction.
TCW gave us a few different brain scans with sightly different locations of the chip, so Iām simply sticking to Rexās brain scan in season 7. Looking at it, I would guess that the chip is located somewhere near the cingulate cortex (orange region).
The cingulate cortex is a large part of the limbic system, therefore involved in emotion formation and processing, but also in cognitive processes like memory.
One part of the cingulate cortex is the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which has cognitive and emotional divisions (and is therefore also called the interconnection of intellect and affect).
Pseudo-science point 1: A change in personality
The clonesā personality changed drastically upon the activation of the inhibitor chips. Interestingly, the ACC projects into the amygdala (among others), therefore being involved in affect, and studies observed that cingulate tumors and other lesions can cause affective changes like apathy, disinhibition, and aggressiveness. Here, we could assume that the the activated inhibitor chips have tumor-like effects, making the clones feel indifferent about the Jedi and their brothers, while also disinhibiting the clones in regard of Order 66.
(Funnily enough, this would also indicate that the Kaminoans didnāt lie entirely when saying that the chips are tumors.)
Pseudo-science point 2: Complete obedience
Upon hearing āOrder 66ā the clones were not able to disobey. In Rexās case, we saw him struggling, though he had no motoric control, eventually.
The ACC has neurons that project into the motor cortex, regulates movements and guides voluntary choices based on previous actions and outcomes - it may work in conjunction or even activate the supplementary motor area, which mediates the preparation and initiation of movement. Studies observed that the electrical stimulation of the ACC can elicit automatic and even complex behaviors, so that we could assume that the activation of the inhibitor chip promotes the execution of Order 66.
Additionally, since the ACC is involved in response selection, it has also been proposed that the ACC plays a role in word and sentence selection. This is interesting considering that the chipped clones also talked differently to the Jedi and their brothers.
Blaming the entire behavior of the clones on one brain region is definitely a bit far-fetched, but the Kaminoans only implemented one chip in the clones' brains, so yeah. I'll blame it on the ACC.
