2024 check in Still have my tumblr logged in my old iPad. Still amazed that the battery still works but it takes like a day before it reaches a full charge or whatever (it's at 8%) Anyways, I'm currently focused on a special video project where I react to my old videos before i move to my apartment. so i talked with my classmate Cathrine with her mom today and we talked about how @mathiastiktok behaves school. Cathrine's mom told me that she actually cried because of it

Mathias talks rudely to his teacher sometimes because he doesn’t want to do work like Math. Something interesting happened today. my teacher said that after we saw the news, there will be no breaks and get to work and Mathias took his jacket and his backpack and left

he literally left the fucking damn class! like what the fuck is wrong with not having breaks after the news??? i kind of wish that Mathias would answer us what is going on with his mind

i mean, i like Mathias but he needs to act normal and accepted himself because that Mathias is not the Mathias i know from my livestreams. he’s my friend and i don’t know why he is so fucking different between school and home

Re: cumulative actions and parks.

We ask people to leave no trace not because we think any one person is going to singlehandedly cause tremendous harm by going off trail or littering or moving rocks or taking souvenirs. We also don’t think we can stop absolutely everyone by asking them nicely to follow the rules and respect the environment.

With the exception of things like arson or chemical dumping, the harm from restrained individual actions is pretty minor. One rock is one rock, one flower is one flower. But the difference between one plucked flower and ten million plucked flowers is ten million restrained individual actions of, “Oh, this is fine, it’s just one flower—what does it matter if I pluck it?”

A single person stacking rocks into decorative cairns isn’t going to kill every salamander. They may deprive a few organisms of shelter or dry out some eggs attached to a stone, but there are other eggs and other hiding places. But then someone else comes along and sees the lovely little cairn and thinks, “Cool, I’ll make one too!” and so do a hundred other hikers that day. Now it’s a trend. Now it’s on Instagram AJ’s everyone wants to try it. Now thousands of people come to the same place and build their own, and the entire streambed has been continuously disturbed and the habitat becomes perilous and barren.

But to you, it’s just one rock. Just one flower. Just one piece of trash. It’s “just one” to a million other people, too.

We can’t control a million people. We can’t control a hundred people. We can’t stop everyone from contributing to a problem, but we can restrain ourselves, and we can educate each other. The only choices we make are about our own actions, but those are cumulative, too. The people who cause harm on purpose with real understanding of consequence are few, and their impact can be mitigated if it’s just assholes causing problems.

Anyway: Fully agreed.

Everyone who breaks leave no trace sees it as a minor infraction. As a species we’re really bad at seeing out individual actions as part of a larger whole, and so it’s VERY easy to morally disengage when it’s you adding to the issue.

I’ve had a lot of jobs where I’ve seen this first hand, and it’s always the same.

Taking one rock doesn’t seem like an issue until you realize you’re in a national park with 4 million visitors a year. Suddenly a hot spring that looks like the one on the left looks like the one on the right

What changed? People thought it was fun to throw coins into it. It goes from bright pristine blue to dingy green and orange as the temperature drops because new, hot water can’t circulate up.

A mile away from Morning Glory Pool (pictured above), Handkerchief pool was fully stopped because someone dropped a log in it. Castle Geyser has a totally smooth face because people chipped bits off as souvenirs.

No individual person doing anything to these places changed them fundamentally, but the concerted effort of thousands can totally destroy the natural world around us.

We are part of nature, we cannot live without it, and until we recognize that with the privilege of enjoying it comes the obligation of preserving (or at least conserving) it, we’ll continue to see it come to harm at every level. While most of us say “this one little rock cairn built/cracker left on the ground/flower picked won’t hurt nature,” I assure you that billionaires fracking for oil in Wyoming are thinking the same thing.

Something I’d like to add to this: while each individual who does this doesn’t necessarily mean to damage these features, mess up the local ecology, and harm the wildlife, that doesnt necessarily mean this sort of damage ISN’T planned or intentional at a systemic level.

What do I mean by that? Well to properly protect these places, the Parks Department needs a budget that’ll allow it to hire enough ppl to keep an eye on guests and stop them from doing destructive stuff like this. It needs to have enough ppl&money to watch&maintain these environments and their visitor infrastructure, and rapidly undo what damage visitors might do to them(intentionally or not). It needs to have the legal authority to fine and otherwise punish ppl who willfully ignore park rules or damage their environments. Conservatives(so Republicans), as part of their campaign to sell off the National Parks, have been reducing the budget and authority of the Parks Department for decades, while also granting private industry ever greater “leases” into and legal exemptions within our National Parks. This sort of slow, piecemeal destruction is the utterly predictable result of those policies. One only has to look to the past of these places, back before they became National Parks and before the Parks Department was given the budget and authority under the New Deal it needed to carryout a truly conservationist mission, to see this same sort of widespread degradation.

tl;dr: Republicans cut the Parks Department’s budget and reduce its authority precisely BECAUSE that makes it difficult to maintain and protect the parks, and the rise in this sort of thoughtless, destructive visitor behavior is exactly what they were hoping to achieve in doing it.
