LIFE UPDATE.

Hi everyone,

As we pass the one year anniversary of our first issue release, we are all very excited here at PSM.

It has been an incredible journey since we first started this project. The original idea of the homegrown site was to serve as a collaborative blog where our contributors could write about the street food scene in the city (hence phillystrEATs). Very quickly the posts took on a much more thoughtful tone as we explored in depth the street influences that infuse the small business economy with passion and an identity that is uniquely Philadelphian. Fast forward to now, our local writers and photographers cover topics that include not only food, but also fashion, music, fitness and culture that is inspired from the streets of this quirky, smelly, fantastic city we call home. Our goal is not to report the latest trends or what you might see on mainstream news or in print media. We hope to bring you the real stories of Philadelphians who choose to make this city an even more creative place to live. The amount of talent that thrives outside of the spotlight is breathtaking, if you just know where to look.

It is safe to say that we have never felt so inspired as we do now. Creativity is constantly spiraling throughout this concrete jungle and once we began to notice, we could not stop. From basement shows in Point Breeze to art galleries in Olde City, there is no shortage of amazing possibilities to learn, experience and grow.

This being said, the most difficult part is definitely managing everything while Alex is working as a travel nurse in pediatric emergency rooms across the country and Caroline is a full-time student. It is near impossible to have so much passion and so many ideas and push it to the side as we try to concentrate on physics homework and other real-life responsibilities.

We thank you for your patience with the release of Issue 005. Unfortunately, sometimes the best way to complete a task is to put it on the back burner for a little while. Our readers mean the world to us and we want it to be clear that we aren’t going anywhere. In fact, we are just getting started.

Here’s to focusing on you. Here’s to focusing on us. Cool things tend to happen when you give it your all, so stay tuned... We have big plans ahead.

Phamily, There’s something magical about this time of year that manages to make navigating this thing called life a little less scary. As wonderful as it is that video chat and text messages help us to stay in touch with far flung friends and family like never before, there truly is no substitute for time spent together with those that matter most to you. Whether you are reading this wrapped in your thickest sweater by a signature Pennsylvania stone fireplace or are sprawled out on a beach chair while warm breezes cause the palm trees around you to sway, I hope you are spending this special time with someone who helps to remind you of all the wonder and joy in this world. The New Year always brings with it a tone of reflection. How far have we come in the past year, and where do we hope to go in the next? It’s also a reminder to be present in your life now; 2016 is all too soon about to become a year of the past. As we enter 2017 perhaps we can make it our resolution to show each other a little bit more of the brotherly love that we are (ironically) famous for. We are all in this thing called life together. Behind the Scenes: PSM’s Winter Lookbook Photoshoot

Sometimes you need to make your own magic. When we started planning the winter photo shoot we figured it would be a cold windy afternoon, however plans don’t always unfold the way you thought they would. Even though the shoot took place in late November it was beautiful and sunny outside, which is ironic since it was cold and windy during our summer shoot. It was so warm that our models had to take off their coats while walking to and from each location, but we were lucky enough to have models that were ready for anything!

In true Philly Streats fashion, everyone worked together to make this photo shoot look gorgeous, all the way from the shoes to the hair. I was lucky enough to be the makeup artists for these beautiful models and I was so pleased with how willing they were to trust my instincts and choices. Our photographer Caroline Scheinfeld showed the models some of the photos as the shoot was taking place to make sure everyone was on board with how they were coming out. Even our editor and creator Alexandra Kaspin took a magazine and fanned one of the models to make it look like it was a windy winter afternoon.

There was so much love and passion that went into this photo shoot and I am sure that is what you will see when you see the final product. We were able to explore Philly on a beautiful sunny day and find more reasons why we love being here. Sabrina Bryan once said “You can do anything as long as you have the passion, the drive, the focus and the support” and I feel that quote describes how we all feel about Philly Streats and this shoot. Happy birthday to Philadelphia’s own Grace Kelly, who would have been 87 today. As a movie star and then as the princess of Monaco, she was widely admired for her understated elegance. Princess Grace’s simple yet magnificent wedding dress, designed by Helen Rose, has been inspiring brides for sixty years.

Behind the scenes: PSM's 'summer' lookbook photoshoot

It has been said that the best laid plans often go awry. Here at Philly Streats, we love plans. Many, many plans are required to publish an online magazine – especially a photo-heavy Summer fashion issue. So when we embarked on this issue’s fashion story, we had some PLANS … and then Mother Nature got involved. 

 We set aside a weekend in late May to shoot our Summer lookbook. We envisioned sunny skies and warm breezes. Unfortunately, Mother Nature handed us two of the coldest days of the season and threatened some really nasty rain. Styling had to be completely re-imagined, umbrellas procured, and models prepped for sub-optimal temperatures. Instead of cozying up with another cup of coffee, we ventured outside. 

We were dealt some pretty uncomfortable cards, but the most beautiful experience rose from the ashes of our best-laid plans. Our models were a ray of light on dreary, rainy Philadelphia. Thanks to our very talented makeup artist Jessica Ruiz of Dreamy Eyes Artistry, their gorgeous looks lasted all day. We were beyond lucky to have three wonderful photographers document our outrageous journey and, most of all, we were blessed with two wonderful assistants who took behind the scenes photos and held umbrellas, coats, and our sanity. We’re extraordinarily excited to show you the resulting fashion story from our memorable weekend, but you’ll have to wait just a few more days! Check back this Friday, June 24th for Issue 2 of Philly Streats Magazine!

P.S.- I’m betting it’ll be 100 degrees and sunny for our Winter fashion shoot. Can’t wait.
