i love that even dude bro anime fans on tiktok can't deny that renga are in love. i keep seeing them say 'i don't usually ship but langa kiss him already!'
Nine year olds in the Haikyuu fandom trying to explain that certain ships donât exist because âboth of them are tops/bottomsâ :
tiny lonely bokuto?? childhood friends bokuroo?
am i thinking of writing an angsty bokuroo childhood friends to lovers fic just bc of this art? possibly....
i've seen a lot of posts about how badly characters from other fandoms such as bungou stray dogs and haikyuu! get mischaracterised in fanon, and honestly i think this should prompt a conversation about stranger things characters get mischaracterised. particularly will. an alarming majority of this fandom has a very misconstrued view on him. he's not sad cause he's a pining gay, he's literally reliving his trauma constantly. neither is he a shy uwu boy who can't do anything for himself, from what subtext suggests, he's one of the most powerful characters. even if that isn't true, he takes a lot of initiative when he feels it's needed. in conclusion, canon will supremacy đđ
Them: Aww, Will is so soft and vulnerable!
Me: The kid literally pulled a gun on the Demogorgon in episode 1, and fought through being possessed to help his friends fight the Mind Flayer in season 2.

super late but hereâs a very specific ship dynamic iâve been obssessed with recently
the blue mf is me, who wants to be my yellow?
Stranger things is about mental health & trauma- deal with it!
Iâve seen a lot of people claim anyone who mentioned this topic immediately be gaslit and told theyâre âjust crazyâ and ârudely projecting their own issues on to the characters.â Like- no you donât have to believe my Will DID/Lonnie theory ( I could be wrong). But to claim one of the showâs central themes isnât about mental health/trauma (screams either complete lack of lit comprehension or denial cause you have your own negative biases towards such people). So letâs just go into whatâs literal text-not subtext/symbolism. Just the super blatant stuff. RIGHT IN THE SHOW!
S1
-We have El when she first appears on screen asked by Benny if her parents starved and hurt her and if thatâs why she ran away. Benny then calls CPS to say El âmay have been ab*sed or something.â After this Lucas says there is âseriously something wrong with her-wrong in the head. Sheâs probably from the NUT-HOUSE in curly county.penthurstâ We also see El cannonically has PTSD-all of s1 sheâll see something benign (a cat, a coke commercial) and is triggered to see a traumatic flashback. Thatâs literally ptsd. Thereâs also hints throughout the seasons sheâs developmentally behind in both language, telling time etc (neglect like Elâs irl can cause an intellectual disability-analysis on El/that subject here). The real pethurst in pensylvannia (not the one in stranger things/ Curly county) closed in 1986- it was a facility for people and mostly kids with intellectual disabilities (it wasnât technically a psych facility like the one in st)-but it was infamous for itâs abuse of these intellectually disabled patients kept there. We also have Brenner be a ab*sive psychiatrist.
- Hopper after suffering from the loss of his daughter. Is popping pills like candy, drinking and smoking constantly. He later says he used to hallucinate and forgot what was real -seeing and hearing sarah and says if he didnât confront the pain heâd âfall down a black hole he couldnât get out of.â NO⊠subtext here about what the void represents nope.
- Both mothers (Terry & Joyce) are dismissed as being mentally ill and simply grieving the loss of their kids . But both end up being right about the supernatural.
-Â âTerry pretends Jane is real. i mean itâs all make believe. you know the doctors all say itâs a coping mechanism.â
- While with Joyce the whole town pre s1 already questioned her mental health. Jonathan says âShe used to have anxiety problems (pre s1).â And Jonathan, Hopper, and Lonnie all assume sheâs hallucinating: talking to Will via lights, seeing a man without a face, saying Willâs body is fake -due to grief. Plus Lonnie mentions the fact Joyceâs aunt Darlene also used to hallucinate as a possible reason (terryâs aunt also had mental health issues mentioned in s2 by Becky). Lonnie even says everything Joyce is seeing is âall in her head.â Hopper and Jon both say she needs to sleep and accept reality and Lonnie says she needs to see a âshrinkâ. Hopper âiâm not saying that youâre crazyâ. Joyce : âno, you are.â Joyce also says to Lonnie âStop looking at me like that⊠like everyone else like iâm out of my damn mind.â Hopper also says about Joyce sheâs âon the edgeâ. Callahan says in response , âsheâs been on the edge for a while nowâ (referring to her mental health- even before Willâs dissappearance)â. While Lonnie says Jonathan is âfeeding into her hallucinations ⊠youâre going to push her right over the edge.â In s2 Hopper says â I think everyone is on edge- you, me, Will most of all. (when talking about Willâs ptsd/trauma)âÂ
- in s1 They claim Will just âfellâ over the edge of the quarryâs cliff. Later the only other queer coded character (Mike) jumps off the quarry cliff (where Willâs body was found) cause the homophobic troy forced him too jump. Troy even says earlier dead-Will is âflying with all the other fairies all happy and gayâ (to Mike). And Troy says to Hopper El made Mike âflyâ after jumping off the cliff. Friendship saved him from jumping off the edge metaphorically ( and heâll prob eventually be happy and gay too).
s2/3
-Will is seeing a therapist . And we are told he has ptsd and will experience the anniversary effect, personality changes, nightmares, having episodes, etc. And things âwill get worse before they get betterâ. Mike also asks if what Will is seeing is âreal or like the doctors say all in your head?â And Will continues to see hallucinations of the mf/upsidedown that only he can see initially.
-Hopper also agrees with owens mentioning how he knew guys with ptsd . joyce : âitâs not like heâs describing a nightmare. He talks about them like theyâre real.â Hopper: âYeah, because theyâre not nightmares theyâre flashbacks.I think heâs right about trauma.I think everyone is on edge (bringing that s1 ref back), Me you, Will, most of all.Nothingâs gonna go back to the way that it was. But itâll get better. In time.â
-Nancy suffers from survivorâs guilt and drunkingly says she killed Barb. Jonathan says like Nancy he has âa weight that you that carry all the time . i feel it too.â (cough depression). He also says he tries to be there for Will but says about Will âheâs not the same. maybe things canât go back to the way they were. (mirroring Hopperâs words earlier that season)â
-Jonathan said in s1 Joyce had âanxiety issuesâ than Nancy says in s3 âyou really are your motherâs son⊠you worry too much.â Then we see him look worried after the comment.
- in s2, Axel & a scientist both call El and Will âschizosâ because of their powers. In s3 mrs driscoll isnât believed about the supernatural cause sheâs schizophrenic-but like Joyce/Terry was right.
- Kali saves a woman named Dottie (a british slang term for crazy) from a mental hospital and then compares herself and El to dottie. saying her non-powered gang is âLike us âŠoutsiders⊠society discarded them.â In graphitti we even see the title âobedlamâ a british poem about discarding the mentally ill and leaving them homeless. El before this sees a mentally ill man screaming âweâre all dead!â Kaliâs friend says to El, after this encounter they were âdead all of usâ until kali âsaved them hereâ (points to head) âand hereâ (points to heart). Pointing to the theme of love and friendship helping those with such issues. Similar to the cliff analogy.
-The cycle of ab*se. Max in s2 says sheâs afraid of becoming like Billy (her ab*ser). We see Billy mimic his ab*ser neil and inflict pain on max. In s3 we see the roots of his behavior are linked to mimicking Neil- Neil in a flashback says about baseball âwhat are you scared?â â did i raise a p*ssy for a sonâ. So young Billy later in a fight says to a boy â what are you scared to fight me? fight me p*ssy. (as he beats the boy)â Deflecting his anger of his father on to someone else. In s3, We see as a kid he used to say to Neil âdonât hurt herâ (his mom)-specifically after Neil backhand slaps her -but we later see possessed Billy backhand slap Max (just like neil). The resentment to his mother leaving - festered into how he views women and max negatively . And his attraction to mrs wheeler prob is linked to him subconsciously missing his mother. Max in s2 even says  he canât take it out on her mother so he does so to her instead (we even have Billy hallucinate hurting mrs wheeler). We see in s2 the cycle of abuse is there- Billy mimics Neil, and then Max mimics Billy. Billy harrasses Max and yells âSAY IT!â (mimicking Neil). Max like Billy later yells âSAY ITâ and uses a bat /violence to stand up for herself against Billy- which earlier she said she was trying to combat ⊠explaining she can be angry like Billy sometimes but she never wants to be like him (her nickname symbolizing this: aka âmad maxâ). Billyâs last dying words were an apology to Max- for becoming her neil. And we hopefully will see Max break this cycle.
- Will says his now memories (that he describes like dreams) are âgrowing â, âspreading â,and âkillingâ. While Kali says they need to face their father and (as Brenner) says El has to confront her âwoundâ or else itâll âgrowâ, âspreadâ and âeventually itâll kill her.â Kali says she used to be like El . She used to bottle her pain away and it âspread.â But she then says âI confronted my pain and I finally began to heal (from those wounds).â We also see with jonathan and nancy when describing âshared traumaâ zoom in onto the scars on their hands. The wound heeled into a scar so to speak.
S2 & 3 ENDINGS
both have Hopper do a speech that delves into dealing with trauma/depression but still finding good along the way.
-s2 Hopper outside the snowball:Â âhow are you holding up? Yeah, that feeling never goes away. It is true what they say, you know. Everyday it does get easier.â
-s3 Hopper monolouge : â Feelings jesus. For so long, iâd forgotten what those even were. Iâve been stuck in one place,in a cave you might say , a deep dark cave (cough s2 supernatural cave). For the first time in a long time, i started to feel things again. I started to feel happy. Life⊠yeah sometimes itâs painful .sometimes itâs sad, and sometimes itâs suprising⊠happy.. And when life hurts you, because it will .remember the hurt . The hurt is good. It means youâre out of that cave.â
BUT YES- St has nothing to do with mental health/trauma, weâre just âcrazyâ and âprojectingâ. Itâs not like some of yaâll act pompous when you just have a bias and get pissy at the idea of relating to characters you âotherâ as âcrazyâ or âdamagedâ irl or anything (so attack people for pointing it out). Or (benefit of the doubt) you are just likeâŠ. oblivious⊠or just a kid who doesnât know better XD
people are really like âdont ship *rarepair* theyâve never interacted thats weird!â and then proceed to pine over a crush that theyâve never talked to,,
Reblog if you think trans women:
A. Are women
B. Can be lesbians
i am once again thinking about how kali prasad from stranger things is literally what all you chucklefucks want out of a character but bc sheâs a brown woman you all hate her
literally everyone:Â why canât female characters be feral and kill their abusers
literally everyone:Â why canât we have more characters of colorÂ
literally everyone:Â why canât we have morally ambiguous charactersÂ
literally everyone:Â canât we have a character who makes genuinely bad decisions and mistakes but isnât a horrible person and gets to learn and growÂ
literally everyone: why canât we have more found familyÂ
stranger things:
literally everyone, pointing: ah. evil
i know you all have heard this before but apparently it doesnât get through your thick skulls so you will hear it again
This actually, for once, has almost nothing to do with the actual writing of the series. Kali Prasad was presented as Elâs lost sister, one of the only people in the world who could understand her and relate to her experiences and trauma. When El finally meets her, here is what we are presented with:
Kali was kidnapped from another country when she was very young- iâd say 5-7Â
She was experimented on the same way El was (and we all saw the s1 flashbacks)- after her introduction we see a flashback of her getting shocked with a cattleprodÂ
As a runaway child from the American government and a brown girl in the racist-ass time period to boot, there is no way she could get home. Even with pre-9/11 airport security, thereâs no way sheâd be able to make it to an airport going to England, find one going to a near enough spot in England to where she lived (and thatâs if she remembered her address at all) and then gotten on the plane, gotten to the uk safely, and found her family. And even if she did? Thereâs no guarantee they couldnât kidnap her again. They found her the first time, after allÂ
She has gathered a gang of her own who are all very protective of each other, and only one is openly hostile towards El, and only when he finds out she knows who Kali is and could present a threatÂ
Kaliâs introduction to El is when she literally saves her, and is pissed at her friend for threatening her, all without knowing who this kid even isÂ
Throughout the rest of the episode, we are also presented with:Â
Kaliâs gang is all made of misfits who were discarded by society, with one of them being mentioned as broken out of an asylum, likely suffering from medical abuse. She is literally described as âsaving them.â This is something she brushes off as âmushâ but everyone else expresses, which means this isnât something sheâs told them to try and make them loyal to her, this is something they firmly believe.Â
We also find out that she had a found family much like Elâs friends in Hawkins, but that âthey couldnât protect her.â From how upset she seems and how she was not able to return, it is likely they either were killed/captured by the lab, or betrayed her to themÂ
When we find out that she is indeed tracking down and killing people, it is made incredibly clear that she is only hurting her abusers (and possibly her gangmatesâ abusers as well) and goes out of her way not to harm innocents. When a shopkeeper points a gun at them, instead of attacking (when there are several gangmates who could easily shoot him before he could let out a shot, as well as the fact Kali could easily manipulate his vision again), Kali steps out, arms raised, and tries to talk him down. When they enter the apartment of the lab worker, upon finding two children there, not once does anyone in her gang consider hurting them, even though theyâre currently calling the police and thus present a threat. From what we see, Axel and Dottie realize theyâre in the apartment and immediately leave them alone to tell Kali they have to go
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THE ABOVE POINT ENOUGH. Kaliâs team is not a âmurder cult.â Thereâs even a line showing this early on- when El admits sheâs killed people, Kali gets very hesitant and asks if they deserved it, and only calms when El says that the people she killed had hurt herÂ
Though Kali does use Elâs tracking powers, she is shown to be very loving and protective of her even when El is not there- having Kali say that El âneeds thisâ and getting upset when her gang makes fun of her, and crying when she leaves, are intentional film cues that her happiness around El and love for her are not a front to get El to do what she wants but instead genuine connection
Speaking of which: when we know that Kali does love El, her scenes bonding with her do show her vulnerable side; she expresses that el makes her feel whole, that she wants to protect her, plays with her, and fully believes in her capabilitiesÂ
Which leads me to the main talking points of people who are Anti-Kali, saying sheâs encouraging El to use her anger instead of moving past it- which is the point. Kali believes thatâs a good coping mechanism because itâs the one sheâs using. She is not telling El to focus on her trauma because she wants to hurt her, she genuinely thinks she is helping. And for a while she is! El says that using her fury to push the train felt âgood,â and itâs not until El realizes she may inadvertently hurt the children of a lab worker that she starts to feel bad about anything thatâs happening. And even after that, Kaliâs advice is the reason she was able to close the Gate in the finale.Â
It is also made very clear that she is not holding El hostage; she says more than once that El can leave whenever she wants, and sheâs only upset at Elâs departure because it was a sudden run in the middle of a police shootout. Kali is a woman who has had all of her choices taken away from her, and as such takes back her freedom in any way she can, and wants her friends and chosen family to have the same choices.Â
Kali isnât even upset at El for not wanting to kill, but for taking the gun away from her and taking away her choice in the matter. Once again, we have been shown that this is pretty much the only thing Kali can do- she was unable to return home, unable to find a family on her own, so all she can do is hit her abusers before they can hit her. She angrily informs El, in the bus, âIf you wanted to show mercy, that is your choice. But donât you ever take away mine. Ever.âÂ
When we get to the infamous Brenner scene, we start with Kali in a vulnerable position, expressing that she simply doesnât want El to get hurt like she did - âI see in you my past mistakes.âÂ
And, yes, she does fuck up in retraumatizing El with a vision of Brenner. It was an incredibly fucked up thing to do. But I think we all need to realize that she did not intend to hurt El in this action. She was shown throughout the episode to believe that directly facing her trauma and letting her anger power her is how she copes with her situation. She isnât doing this to âpunishâ El or make her feel worse, she believes she is helping El to get past her insecurities and fears and start to heal. She literally says that when she let her anger go, she âbegan to heal.âÂ
Normally I wouldnât be so pissy over people being upset at her for this, but in comparison with how the fandom at large treats the white characters who have done similar or even worse things, it becomes clear why Kali isnât a popular character. I wonât even go into the âeveryone woobified Billy so much he got a redemption in s3,â letâs instead talk about another chosen family of Elâs- Hopper.Â
Hopper is Elâs father figure. He genuinely loves her, wants to protect her, does his best, and also makes mistakes and fucks up. However, because he is a white male, not only are these mistakes glossed over, a lot of the time theyâre taken as âquirkyâ instead of problems he needs to grow past. In Season Two, the same season as Kali, during an argument with El he literally threatens to call the Lab and tell them where she is. Whether or not he meant it is not the point; telling El that he will give her back to the people who treat her as a subhuman experiment and torture her is a fucked up thing to do. In Season Three, we all joke about âoverprotective dadâ Hopper, but we also need to realize that what is happening is that he is:
Threatening the boyfriend of his daughter into lying to her, when they both know how seriously she takes lies, instead of actually communicating effectively with them.Â
Is super happy when his daughter is upset by this.Â
Never apologizes or owns up to this; when Mike finally admits that Hopper threatened him, El takes this as him trying to avoid responsibilityÂ
This is all after Season Two, in which Hopper forcibly isolated El from literally everyone, including Mike, for a year- so, yeah, theyâre gonna be a little clingy!
Do these all make Hopper a horrible abuser? No! But theyâre serious problems that go unaddressed before his lil vacation to Russia, and probably wonât be brought up again, which youâd think people would be a little more upset about. Except, no, heâs the perfect Dad for El, and weâll never talk about this at all except to joke about his feud with Mike.Â
These actions are just as bad, if not worse in some cases, than what Kali did- especially because his S2 action of threatening her was done with the express intention to upset her, whereas Kali at least had good intentions. His S3 actions are arguable, but can we even really say it was âgood intentionsâ when it was, again, threatening a 14yo into upsetting his daughter instead of just growing the fuck up and talking it out?Â
And yet we all know why everyone skips over Hopperâs little issues and either fixates on Kaliâs or ignore her character entirely. It does not escape my notice that Hopper is a white male character, while Kali is a brown woman. Both are traumatized characters who find a family with El and do their best to take care of her, even though they make mistakes along the way. Only one of them is a fan favorite.Â
tl;dr? Kali is a traumatized brown woman who uses her anger (and kickass superpowers) to hurt her abusers ONLY, never intentionally harming innocents and doing her best to protect her chosen family. But because sheâs a brown woman, nobody cared, or they all outright hated her, and so she didnât even show up in the next season and god only knows if theyâll ever bring her back.Â
Thanks for that.Â
