Rei has always said that she doesn’t think she has succeeded at all. She believes that if she was successful, she wouldn’t have to think about next week’s cash flow, she wouldn’t have to worry. Sometimes I ask her, ‘Can’t you just be happy? Just for one instant?’ One time she didn’t want to come to Paris at all, she wanted to cancel the whole show. She said, ‘This is no good, no one is going to like it, it’s not good enough.’ In fact, she says that every time, and every time I remind her that she’s always wrong. It’s getting worse though, the suffering and torture she puts herself through. I’m constantly reassuring her. I try to protect her and make things easier but it just gets too hard sometimes. But that’s what drives her, this dissatisfaction. For her, one instant of self-satisfaction would mean the end.

Come sleep with me: We won’t make Love, Love will make us.
Julio Cortázar
If you’re really listening, if you’re awake to the poignant beauty of the world, your heart breaks regularly. In fact, your heart is made to break; its purpose is to burst open again and again so that it can hold evermore wonders.
Andrew Harvey
Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.
Howard Thurman
Because if there is one thing I hate, it’s good taste, to me it’s a dirty word. Genius and taste don’t go together.
Helmut Newton
Won’t we be quite the pair?—you with your bad heart, me with my bad head. Together, though, we might have something worthwhile.
Zelda Fitzgerald, “Letter to F. Scott Fitzgerald,” 20 Dec. 1940
“Marina Abramovic and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. at her 2010 MoMa retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened.”
Martin Margiela, i-D April 1998
"There comes a time when you meet someone and you just want to make them smile for the rest of your life"
Lindsey @ Charlotte Ronson Spring 2011
I am going to stop telling women in my life how beautiful they look when they are polished. Fuck polished. I want crazy morning hair. I want to see your nude lips, unpainted eyes, and naked cheeks. I don’t want to see your face in any other capacity than how you are when you open your eyes each morning. We can paint our faces, sometimes, sure—but everyday? I want to see you wear joy. I want to see you wear confidence. I want to see you wear your worth so proudly you won’t falter because you have bags under your eyes from staying up late working, painting, or breast feeding. I want to see those little baby hairs that rebel against you each morning without you fighting them with a straightening iron. I want to see you in all your glorious you-ness. I want to see you wear what you love—when you light up speaking to me of something that you get with your whole soul. Yes, that’s when I think you’re truly beautiful. Nothing looks as beautiful as joy feels. Nothing. Find what makes your spirit shout in furious joy—and do that.
Janne Robinson
That evening, I go through a list of Margielas in the Belgian phone directory hoping that someone can bring a reality to the designer. There are about a dozen of them and I pick a number at random. Someone answers almost immediately. “Yes hello I’m writing a piece on Martin Margiela…” I say. “He’s my brother,” interrupts a gentle, male voice on the other end. “But I don’t speak about him.” It is an abrupt call, but it confirms that Martin Margiela is real. He’s not a ghost.
