I’ve been on Tumblr since around 2010 and have witnessed lots of changes here over time. There was a great sense of community here until the platform was sold in 2017. Since then, it has never lived up to its potential.
The countless flaws that we all laughed about have never been fixed and it’s no longer funny. The stupid blurred profile thumbnails, the over moderation of gay accounts, the constant hidden post tags, and the basic lack of functionality have become tiresome. I have 15k+ followers, but this feels like an empty arena. Most accounts are abandoned and there is barely any interaction here, so I probably won’t post here again.
However, I found the community I was missing on Bluesky. The users are active, you can post whatever you want, and moderation is quick and effective (like they actually block spammers and bullies). You can find me there under the same handle. I hope to see you there.
Tumblr was fun until it wasn’t and after 15 years, it’s time to say goodbye. I’ll look for you in the blue sky.
