Neutron stars are really heavy.
A neutron star’s density is mind-boggling. These stars are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed together in a tiny radius.Â
Just a teaspoonful of this material would weigh over a trillion kilograms — more than the weight of the entire human population (which reaches a few hundred billion kilograms).Â
To make something as dense as a neutron star, the whole of humanity would need to be crammed into a space the size of a sugar cube.
Clouds weigh billions of pounds.
Clouds look like they weigh little more than a tuft of cotton, but they’re heavier than they look. Your average cumulus (fair weather cloud) can weigh more than a million pounds, and a vivacious thunderstorm can pack billions (if not trillions) of pounds of water in one tiny part of the sky. Yet, all of that weight seems effortlessly suspended in the air.
If you could drive your car straight up at highway speed, you’d leave the Earth’s atmosphere and enter space in just over an hour.
A star made of diamonds
There’s a star that literally shines like a diamond ... because it is one. Astronomers discovered a star made entirely of diamonds in 2004. It’s more than 2,400 miles across and is composed of 10 billion trillion trillion carats. Unfortunately, it’s 50 light years from Earth.
