It would be a lie to say that Percy wasn't excited to find a cell phone in his mail box. He'd read about them in his research on modern technology, but hadn't the chance to actually see one in person. The excitement didn't necessarily come from the opportunity to communicate with someone far away--the Earring of Whisper wasn't so different from that after all. He was mostly interested in the "camera" feature.

As Percy stared back at the picture he took he couldn't help but think that it wasn't /quite/ what he expected from a camera. He was still fascinated by it, sure, but this... crown of flowers that suddenly appeared on the screen was a little strange. In the back of his mind he wouldn't help but think that perhaps Keyleth would find something like this fun. After a bit of pushing random buttons to see what they did, one of them caused a box to show up.

☆  Getting them something they need before they ask for it.

it had been a late night. despite constant attempts pike couldn’t seem to get through to serenrae, and it left the gnome worried at best and despondent at worst. so often would pike lose track of the time, praying until the sun came up and gave her a false sense of abreakthrough.

rubbing her eyes, it wasn’t until pike found herself yawning that she realized she had stayed up well into the night. she had to be strong for her friends here, because if she let on she was scared it wouldn’t have been good for anyone. praying made her feel better, even if only a little bit. the distinct smell of coffee filled her senses as her eyes opened at the end of her recitations, a white head of hair taking her by surprise.

“percy… you’re still up?” a bit embarrassed at her futile attempts, pike stifled another yawn, “i’m sorry – excuse me. i, i just –”

“thank you. are you up working on a project?”

Percy was no stranger to staying up all night, whether it was for forging or some other guilt related tinkering. Pike, however, was not. She could try to hide it, but it was pretty obvious that something was bothering her. And, well, rather than prod his friend to sleep like a normal, healthy person, Percy enabled. Not sleeping and wallowing in issues was way more up his alley--he could actually help Pike in that area. At the very least, Percy wasn't one to judge, especially in this specific instance. After all, she obviously wasn't taking death in stride--or flagrantly ignoring it like he was.

He took a sip of his own cup of coffee; not because he needed the caffeine to stay up, but rather that he was fond of the taste. In comparison, coffee was far too bitter back on the Material Plane.

“Yes, I am, actually. I'm designing a new gun that will incorporate some aspects from more modern firearms. Things have been peaceful here, so I may not really need it, but it's good to be cautious.”

“And what of you, Pike? It's unusual for you to be up this late outside of being on night watch.”

Tonight he was going to do it. He was going to fix this stupid... imitation gun. Percy didn't even care for the BB gun--he had plans on designing and forging a better gun himself later--but this had gone on too long. After too many mishaps and far too much research (granted, he did kind of enjoy that), it was a matter of pride and principle that he be able to reassemble this particular gun.

Perhaps it was the fact that he wasn't suffering from a lack of sleep, but this time around, Percy had a fairly easy time with putting the firearm back together. Pieces slid in without a problem, there wasn't anything missing. After a half hour or so, Percy had in his hands a working BB gun.

He aimed it at the floor and fired a test shot. A loud bang echoed briefly in his room; nothing nearly as deafening as Bad News, but enough that it might've startled a neighbor. Percy took a glance at the floor, finding a small dent where the BB pellet impacted. Nothing noteworthy. He'd read that these types of guns weren't meant to be lethal, but still. It was an advanced weapon, it shouldn't have left Percy feeling so unsatisfied.

He could definitely make something better than this.

                       "not at all. the practice would be good.” vesemir would certainly be happy that she would be working on endeavors that would help with her witcher training. “i think i’ll stick with ‘just percy’ – a pleasure to meet you. call me ciri.” she could have introduced herself with her full name – though it wasn’t her, not exactly. her attention was quickly drawn to the sketch that he presented. she hummed to herself. they looked like fire arms, and while she hadn’t any experience with them personally, she was quite familiar with them on her worldly travels. “fascinating. you build these all on your own? you’ll have to teach me how to shoot when all is said and done.”

                        after a few thoughtful moments, ciri nodded. “i see – witchers use something similar for the bombs we crafts – though it’s quite unruly, and quite unsafe. i take it that it’s a bit more controlled in those chambers, hm? potassium nitrate is easily found in fertilizers – and food preservatives, though here there are refrigerators for that, so it very well may be a dead end. fungicides carry sulfur more often than not, and charcoal – well… arson is a very easy solution. this seems doable. shall we begin?”

His expression shifted slightly when Ciri suggested that he teach her how to fire a gun. Originally, Percy loathed the idea of his inventions getting into the hands of other people. After all, his guns were forged on the foundation of getting revenge and hurting others. Percy was a man of questionable character and bad decisions, but even he knew that such a thing shouldn't be allowed to spread. He even made sure that the other knew that if and when he died, his workshop should be destroyed soon after. But the Hive was different. Guns were apparently being handed off to people as soon as they entered the city, and books claimed that they had been around for quite a long time. Were his guilt and worries still reasonable in a place where he wasn't the source of such firearms? Was reason enough to stop him from feeling the way that he did about them? Thankfully, that was a discussion for another time. He'd have a moment later to think about this rift in morality.

Percy listened carefully as Ciri listed off different sources they could get to make their own black powder. It all seemed doable. His expression immediately perked up at the prospect of making their own charcoal. Now, Percy wasn't necessarily an arsonist, but he couldn't deny the thrill he got whenever something he built (intentionally) exploded. Plus--if he had to be honest--it just seemed like a lot of fun and a very good and productive way to let off some steam.

“Well, Ciri, I do believe that that is the best porposal I've heard since arriving here. If you would, please--lead the way.”

Which does your character idealize most: happiness or success?

“Happiness, for sure. Success if something that anyone can achieve in at least some small dosage with effort, but happiness--happiness is fleeting. It’s something that’s pretty to think about.”

Vex’ahila was always thankful for Percival’s voice of reason. ..perhaps reason wasn’t the phrasing, but even in times of great duress the gunslinging, smooth talking, now-noble-again gentleman always provided a sense of rightness. Ever calm and calculating (and she would never turn down one of his tinkered arrows either), Vex just felt better around Percy. And thank gods he was here because the half-elf was moping after the sudden realization that Trinket was no where to be found and her brother was not with her either. 

This place was so damned frustrating…!

“Percy, you know your shit, right?” She finally managed to ask between bemoaning the loss of Trinket, “This isn’t some hallucination or spell of some sort, correct? No big baddie out to get us this time, I’m hoping?” Vex inquired hopefully. If it was a spell or hallucination she could juuuuust maybe do something about it. It already seemed like an unlikely option though.

She just….wasn’t happy about it.

Now with Vex's arrival, Percy's idea that sooner or later all of Vox Machina would appear in the Hive was becoming more and more possible. There was only Vax, Scanlan, and Trinket left after all. It probably (definitely) didn't bode well for the people of Emon--and no doubt Pike would worry herself sick over it--but he couldn't dent that it was nice seeing his friend again.

Percy shifted slightly as he listened to Vex's woes. He was never very good at comforting other people, but he knew how important Trinket was to her. It didn't seem like the right time to say what was really on his mind, if there ever would be a "right time".

“Well. As far as I know, most magic spells can't last for more than a day and I've been here for about three weeks now? The likelihood of this city being a part of some grand hallucination or illusion is high unlikely. With the Hive itself--I have a theory, and it's basically that we're on another plane much like the Feywild.”

With his overnighter fixating on the airship granted to him by the Hive's wish system, Percy was still dealing with a hefty amount of exhaustion. Sure, this wasn't the first time he lost sleep for the sake of his work, but that didn't really make things easier.

Still, Percy had other things that needed to get done. For starters, that BB gun he disassembled on his first day in the Hive. He had spent the better part of three weeks studying modern guns and he had a better understanding of their build. Finally, he felt confident that he would be able to put the gun back together.

➟ Tinkering Check with Disadvantage: 8 12 + 6 = (14)

He spent a few hours on it, and while it did seem as though things were going well and pieces were all falling into place, Percy hit a slight bump. Based on outer appearances, the BB gun did look the exact same as it did when it was first given to him upon his arrival, but he wasn't foolish enough to carry it with him without making sure that it would work. With the magazine out, the gunslinger decided to do a little test. He pulled the trigger--or... he tried to. It appeared to be stuck in place. Which meant that something else was out of place.

Percy let out a sigh, both out of disappointment and sheer exhaustion. He debated his options: stay up and continue toiling over his gun and hope that he'll figure it out eventually, or rest and maybe have a better chance of fixing the gun with a fresh mind. A stubborn part of him wanted to go with the former. Fortunately for Percy, he wasn't (currently) driven by inner demons, so he could be practical about this.

Rest first, then he'll try again.

please be respectful when writing about trauma. i’ve noticed a lot of people glorify it, or make it literally what their muse is. please do research, please make your muse more than just a reason to talk about triggering things. i know it can be cathartic as well – but survivors are not their abuse, and half the time i see blogs glorifying it or favoring toxicity over healthy and empowering things.
