“One time about 1970, we were headlining at Caesars Palace, and the Everly Brothers were opening for us. The Everly Brothers were probably the most important postwar singing brothers (act) that ever existed. But they traditionally never got along. They hated each other. And they decided they didn’t want to go on. They were mad at each other. And you just didn’t do that (not go onstage) to a Vegas showroom. They have ways of persuading you to go on. And so Tommy and I decided to have dinner with them, as we were almost exactly the same age as the two brothers, and tell them, you know, how they could get along with each other. Tommy took one guy aside, and I took the other. And Tommy and I almost broke up and didn’t go on! But we got them to go on.” -Dick Smothers (x)

I knew the Everly Brothers did get along but I didn’t know it was that deep. 😥

To answer a little about their Mom, Don lives about 5 miles from his mother and does communicate with her now. Last I heard he wouldn't set foot in her house, though. It has changed little over the years, and maybe he's afraid of being overwhelmed by memories. Both brothers had a difficult relationship with their mother, although Don spent the most time estranged from her. Neither Phil nor Don spoke to their mother at Ike's funeral, according to family that was there.

I have no way of confirming or denying any of this information, but here’s this for anyone who’s interested.
