beautiful snow fall today, this little trotter was seemingly unphased. What a guy !
been awhile, look at this little sweetie hanging under the heat lamp for warmth! so cool.
these fellas were all bundled up cozy in this windy weather. Good for them :)
got to work waaayyy too early and had a Lil lunch in an alley, caught these fellas who seemed to be doing the same thing.
just a couple bros :)
New semester of school means I'll be downtown pigeon scouting more often! none today sadly :(
tommorow will be better for sure.
Pigeon wings under a UV light
Note that pigeons, like most birds, have UV cones and so the odds are pretty good that they can see those patterns. (They also have magnetoceptic receptors in their eyes that probably allow them to see the polarization of light, too.)
They can't hear anything higher than 4 kHz very well, though. (Our upper limit, like many mammals, ranges up to 20 kHz--well above what any bird can dream of.) That means that the range of human speech and music moves above what the pigeon can even hope to perceive. Their perception of the soundscape must be very different than ours--especially because pigeons are actually adapted to hear right down to about 0.5 Hz, well below our own species lower limit of ~2Hz. They're probably also using this grasp of the infrasound to navigate.
What fascinating animals. What a wonderful experience, what an alien world exists behind the eyes of a pigeon!
