‘The biggest rollback of disability rights in a generation’ – Charities respond to Supreme Court ruling
The uk Supreme Court has just done a major rollback on disability rights and is putting more disabled people in danger
Yeah, it's fucked this. Bad.
The Court implies that individuals with profound cognitive disabilities cannot be "deprived" of liberty because their condition limits their ability to experience it—a view that devalues their fundamental rights.
they treat disabled people like animals
They're actually treating disabled people *worse* than animals. They're taking away the independent investigation of conditions within involuntary inpatient care. An animal in a zoo has more oversight over their quality of life in captivity than disabled people have in inpatient settings under this ruling.
This is removing any external oversight of institutions that are already abusive.
I work in care, and any good care service will see this as unsafe.
At our place, we’ve had a few individuals have their DOLs removed due to this new law. Which in my opinion, is quite unsafe.
However to counteract that, we can ‘act in someone’s best interest.’
So whilst individual A could, legally, just leave the service, or go to the shops alone, it’s within their best interest they remain in the service or go to the shops with a staff member as it’s unsafe for them to do this alone.
As time passes, I can definitely see more people having their DOLs removed that really shouldn’t, as it keeps them safe. And whilst that’s just a minor example, there’s a real big safeguarding risk with getting rid of this act.
At any good service, staff should always still continue to do the same measures that keep people safe, for individuals ‘best interests.’ But, I can imagine a lot of not good services will get away with a lot more neglectful behaviour.
The first photo is from 1956. It shows a Black woman watching members of the Ku Klux Klan (a terrorist, racist, far-right organization focused on white supremacy) walking along a sidewalk in Montgomery, Alabama (USA). I couldn't find the photo's author, but most sources state that it was taken in 1956.
The second photo shows members of the Patriot Front group (a white supremacist and nationalist group, formed in 2017, that openly advocates what they call "American Fascism") traveling on the subway during the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence in Washington D.C., while a Black woman watches them. The photo is by photographer Cheney Orr, taken on July 4, 2026, 70 years after the first photo.

V FOR VENDETTA (2005)

Pro-Palestine activists protest outside Lockheed Martin office, for the company's complicity in Israeli genocide by supplying the Israeli military with F-35 fighter jets.
Lockheed Martin is one of the world's largest aerospace and defense contractors, headquartered in the United States, and a primary manufacturer of advanced military aircraft including the F-35 that Israeli uses in killing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
This comic is about my friend Fadel. He survived the bombing of his home over 800 days ago, and has still not raised enough money to get to a hospital where they can remove the shrapnel from him. Worse, he rarely has enough money to even afford his medications and supplements to treat his blood disorder and the effects of long-term malnutrition.
Did you see the BDS movement have updated their boycott list? XBox, Reebok, Teva and Disney have moved to priority targets, and they’re supporting the organic boycott of Zara. Dominos is back on the list too (did it ever really leave though)
Yes I did!
Here is the updated list for anyone who wants to stay in the loop
Yesterday I read through the 94 page long report detailing Israel's deliberate and systematic destruction of childhood in Gaza. This is done through direct means (e.g. snipers targeting babies and children, the constant use of explosives in residential areas knowing they are more likely to kill children), through structural means (e.g. targeting infrastructure that children depend on such as pediatric hospitals, vaccination sites, schools, and orphanages), and through destroying the very foundations of children's dignity (e.g. desecrating children's spaces and belongings, and sexually humiliating them).
